Bambuild series, Build 04 Â - Â âBamboo Passageâ
Head Designer; Steve SzellÂ
Project Coordinators; Steve Szell, Marissa Lindquist
Our Third Variation of the Bambuild Project and our 4th build. This iteration of the Bambuild series was featured as a part of the Asia Pacific Architectural Forum for 2016 and runs from the 1st of march to the 17th of June. The project was featured alongside other notable architects such as Vo Trong Nghia and Richard Hassell of WOHA.
Due to the Time constraints attributed to the forum the Bambuild could not be run as a competition again. Instead We decided to put together a team from the previous builds participants and Dub Committee Members to workshop a design together for the event. After three workshop sessions we had a direction and conceptual approach to follow which I then developed to build able proposals after each session. Once the design was confirmed I documented the build in stages and organised the bamboo harvest to be taken place a week before the build commenced. The project took two solid weeks to build with a shifting team of approximately 50 people in total and required allot of adjustments onsite to develop the final construction methodology. This was partially due to the size of the bamboo used being 150mm in diameter being highly mature latiflorus bamboo. This project has been one of the most challenging to run due to the limited time frame to organise the project in and the lack of a confirmed budget which was sourced through crowd funding on Pozible. Despite this, I can say it has been the most rewarding and illuminating experiences Iâve ever had running a project. The structure is up at QUT Lblock lawn until June, please head down and walk through it if your have the time.Â
Concept Statement:
â
Inspired by pathways.
This design proposal is situated on a site which was initially intended to be used by students as a ârecreational parkâ space. It is more often used however as a direct passage between buildings in the university campus with little regard to the build pathways that create the boundary of the site.
With this in mind the structure was designed to emphasise and partially redirect the users movement through the lawn by lining up the curvature of the structure to the natural slope and intended pathways either end of the area. The symmetrical curvature and internal movement of Bamboo Passageway also works to create an interpreted nexus point in the centre of the structure which seeks to draw the user fully into the space.
As the user is drawn inside it is intended that once they have entered the structure the user then realises that as the quality of internal and external spaces change, so does the potential for occupation of the space as a refuge from the sun and public exposure. Once inside the natural qualities of the bamboo posts create a direct relationship to the potential of nature within a man made structure and intends to link the user to the forest from which the bamboo was cut. â

Likeness Studies
These two portraits were quick exercises to capture the subjects likeness as directly as possible. The woman is âStudy Drawing of a Womanâ redone to capture her likeness more accurately and the man is my Grandfather, Laszlo. This drawing is a small study for an upcoming portrait that I will be doing of him.

Fishbelly Truss Construction Guide - Prototype Development
For Cave Urban and Casey Brown ArchitectsÂ
This Fishbelly truss prototype was built based on designs developed by Jed Long of Cave Urban in collaboration with Casey Brown Architects for a community building in Cambodia, (see model pictured). While continuing my volunteer work for Cave Urbanâs Yearly woodford build I was given the opportunity to develop the construction method for this fishbelly truss design to built at the project site.Â
There were several limitations to the project which were overcome through testing of the material and developing a build methodology. The two major limitations to the build were as follows; Limited sizing of materials to be 80mm in diametre and 6m in length; all connections had to be made with traditional bamboo pinning techniques; maximum use of materials to be made including using offcuts where possible.Â
During my limited time at the woodford site we developed the appropriate method of construction and documented the process in as much detail as possible. It was highly rewarding being able to test and understand the materials properties and apply my theoretical knowledge to a design build project with a fantastic team. The prototypes were used to produce the shade structure at the Pinapple lounge during the festival.Â
Issue 9 explores the concept of "Back to the future' through a series of articles, artworks and stories.
D/zine Issue 9 saw the editorial role passed over to Lexi Illuk who developed the theme around the concept of âBack to the future,â an exploration into how we attempt to perceive and reflect our ever changing world. In my article I explored the evolution of creative mediums based on the influence of the internet, specifically focusing on stand up comedy as a creative medium. With the influence of the internet and the unexpected immediacy required for comedy to function the industry has changed directly as a result of streaming performances and exposure granted to comedians. In this article I explore this change in relation to other mediums both static and performance based.
Issue 8 of D/zine explores the concept of Sustainability through a series of articles, interviews, photographs, and artworks.
D/zine Issue 8 was the first iteration of the zine in Mirandaâs editorial direction with Miranda and Angus continuing their graphical collaboration for the issue. The Theme for issue 8 explored the concept of sustainability in the broader sense and itâs relationship with design and art. My Contribution was an article written from my ideas and experience with the âBambuildâ Projects and how theyâve affected my views on architecture / industry from a sustainable point of view. I attempted to explore both material and cultural sustainability within the industry and what it means to really be sustainable in the delivery of a project, both through the collaborative nature of design and ethical choices in materiality.
Hall of Democracy - Final Proposal
DAH 811 - Project Three
The final design proposal of my Bachelors Degree. HOD is a civic building designed to reflect the ideology of democracy and to allow for the publicâs needs as a community on the whole. The programming is designed to cater to cultural aspects of Brisbane city and the community needs, most notably by offering space and room for programs such as VORTCS language exchange program. The architecture is designed to reflect the democratic system as it is intended to work, beginning with a core framework and foundation for which the system can operate from and then application of the party members and political parties with their leaders to put forward and respond to the needs of the people. This idea is explored through the representation of the internal programming of the building onto the facade  as the buildings rooms bulge out of the confines of the floor plate to indicate to the passerby what is happening in the building displaying the internal goings for all to see. The process of renewal within the political system is shown through the inclusion of a âbamboo filterâ which while filtering light into the building has a strong conceptual reasoning for its inclusion. The bamboo which clads the building represents the politicians and parties in the system, where the structure makes the building fundamentally, the bamboo allows it to be expressive and function by moderating light entering into the building. The bamboo even if treated will weather and need to be replaced over time, ensuring the building undergoes a constant process of renewal much like out political system does periodically.

Hall of Democracy - Technical Report
DAH 811 Project TwoÂ
The technical response to the required amount of façade glazing as required by the client is as shown in the following report. The client has requested we take the concepts and principals of the luxifer prism in approach to light diffusion within the hall of democracy. The luxifer prism in principal is a design to increase the amount of light entering into a building for better light management in deep heavy structured buildings. Conversely to this my proposed hall of democracy is a relatively shallow building with very light applications of structure in its form. This combined with the climatic context of Brisbane means that the building, while needing to be naturally day lit, does not require a concentration of light into the building. In face it is the opposite condition which is required of the implemented system, where a building with above 80% façade glazing in Brisbane requires serious consideration in the cooling and management of light radiating into the building. By being respectful to the quality of light and variations of light allowed with the luxifer prism, i have approached the screening method to incorporate 4 various conditions based on the type of programming being serviced and the quality of architectural expression required for that condition. Majorly i have proposed the use of double layered bamboo screening along the glazing to offer a sustainably viable material type and conceptually grounded design response. The use of double layering and variations in the patterning created also allows for a variation in the qualities of light entering into the building, creating a very specific aesthetic feature experienced by the building occupants at various times of the day. The bamboo proposed to be used for this screening is to be bambusa textilus of a 50mm diameter and oldhammii of a 70mm diameter (maximum). This screening is to be used in conjunction with a double glazed curtain wall system housed in the building formwork.
Hall of Democracy
DAH 811 Project One - Project one Schematic Design Proposal  HOD is a civic building designed to reflect the ideology of democracy and to allow for the public's needs as a community on the whole. The Hall of Democracy reflects this idea through its application of materials and structure, particularly in the interest of a "transparent system" which the client has asked to be considered. The building represents the idea of transparency in its facade development beginning with the inclusion of curtain wall glazing systems to be the major structural expression in the building. This idea is further explored through the representation of the internal programming of the building onto the facade  as the buildings rooms bulge out of the confines of the floor plate to indicate to the passerby what is happening in the building and how. This is explored in all manner of structural items including the expression of the fire stairwell and bluntness of the structural columns. However through the careful orchestration of these elements the building presents its purpose elegantly to the public, not wishing to hide the internal goings but rather to express it for all to see. Additionally to this the concept of bias within the political system has been explored. Despite the ideology of democracy in it's ideal state being unflawed once people become involved then the system can become warped, turning into a caricature of it's true intention. This is explored through bias which plagues the political system and which is detrimental to democracy. The process of renewal within the political system is shown through the inclusion of a "bamboo filter" which while filtering light into the building has a strong conceptual reasoning for its inclusion.
