set in before book for the most part and ends in the closet scene of book 1 episode 2 Bryce finds a voice that’s been haunting him for years.
He’s never admitted this to anyone but whenever he’s overwhelmed and needed grounding most times he falls back to one particular dream, one that was much too real to be just a dream, and so he called it a memory.
It’s the same, every time, the same word pass their lips, the same three songs play always play, (for once in my life, at last, and I don’t want to miss a thing.) the same three songs he plays on repeat whenever he needs grounding, to keep him going, to try and reach that level of peace that he had in that dream.
It always goes the same way, and everytime He falls back to the memory he wishes he could stay forever.
His eyes are closed and below his head was someone’s thighs, long fingers carded through his hair and as ‘For once in my life’ played.
He could feel his lips stretched into a smile, he could feel it in his shoulders, that whoever he was with took all the weight from them, he could feel it in his bones that this was home.
‘Bryce, are you actually gonna help me study are you just here to use me as your personal pillow?’ the woman with the funny accent asked.
Boston? definitely sounded east coast, maybe new york.
‘If you wanted to study you wouldn’t have asked me to help.’ ‘oh? and then wise one what were my motives? to lure you into my nest for sustenance?’ she poked his cheek with a pen.
‘Nah you just like spending time with me.’ He could hear himself hum along to the song, his foot shaking to the rhythm.
There was a pause and every time it made him nervous for himself, this version of himself thats found something that made everything in his soul scream ‘THIS IS IT’
But without fail she lets out a puff of air and chuckles. ‘Who doesn’t?’
He felt it. That he loved her, and that’s why her laugh was the sweetest thing he’s ever heard.
‘Fine fine- give me your cards.’ finally, he opened his eyes and opened them to neat, crisp curves and curls of handwriting not of his own.
‘worst risk factor CAD?’ ‘give me something more than diabetes mellitus, Bryce.’
‘Any combination of hyperlipidemia, HTN, Hypertriglyceridemia, glucose intolerance, diabetes, and hyperuricemia -underlying mechanism in insulin resistance is?’
‘metabolic syndrome X’
She always sounded so proud, so sure and even though he wasn’t quite sure if she was right, though as time went on he became more sure, and even began to learn what those words meant.
He knew she was real because he wasn’t so creative, never in his wildest dreams could he come up with her.
No matter how many times he replays this he still tries to gather all he can from it. He could mimic her voice by now, he’s sure. Because he had memorized the lower pitch, the slow, even way she let her words leave her lips a billion times over. He memorized everything, The way she sounds like she smiles as she teases him, the way he sounded different too, deeper, more sure of himself, maybe.
He’s hardly sure that is him, but if it was he knew that whoever she was came sometime past puberty that’s for certain and that she definitely sounded like she was from the mainland.
And he’s pretty sure shes very smart if she’s talking about metabolic syndrome X.
And here he was at twenty-six face to face with a woman as she tried to wipe her face.
“I feel like I’m interrupting something.” He admitted upon looking at her.
“Get in or get out, please just close the door.”
“Hey hey hey what’s wrong?“ “Nothing.” she said “I may be just a scalpel jockey but I’m not that dumb.”
She looked at him with the first speck of amusement he’s seen in her eyes since she looked at him in the locker room.
And with a tone he knew all too well she grinned, “are you sure about that?” she asked.
That familiar tone, that teasing grin- it was wall nails in a coffin he hadn’t noted was being sealed around him.
There was that same drop from his dream, where his heart was simultaneously in his throat and in the souls of his feet and a thudding thought that knocked against his skull incessantly. ‘We’ve found her! this is it! this is it!’
But he wasn’t sure, and he sure as hell wasn’t gonna admit it to her yet.
“fine, you don’t have to tell me but know you’re not alone.” She looked at him like she was trying to solve an equation before she spoke again.
“You don’t look stressed how’d you do it?” “The way I see it is you’ve got two options. One, breeze through life with an unshakable self-assurance like me.” She arched her brow and before she could say anything he continued “or, Two…. ride it out.”
She let herself lean against the shelf as she chuckled. “ride it out? you’re great at advice.”
“Of course you’re overwhelmed, its the job, and its your first day, you’re adjusting. if you don’t give yourself a chance to make mistakes, to get better, no one else will.” he says
She pauses for a moment and theres a flash of something in her eyes that makes him wonder if she knew too, if her heart was at the bottom of her feet too.
She looks surprised, intrigued?
“I’ll try.” “Good. Because I’d hate to lose you so quick.. is there anything I can get you?” at this she paused.
“can I hug you?” “Alright.”
It was a bit stiff at first but after a moment she figured where to have her hands (around his waist.) and just a breath after that she melted into him and just as he did in that dream she let out a sigh as though her very soul was relived to be in his arms. Right where she was supposed to be.
“This is nice, you’re a pretty good hugger.” she admits softly. “one of my many talents.” he replies.
She looks up at him staring at him before her eyes dropped to his lips before moving back up to his eyes.
“wait a second was this just a play to get me alone here?” he joked and with a grin she surged forward and before her lips met his she whispered “one of my many talents.”
The moment her lips met his he was sure that he was a goner.
He’d never tell her, but he’s pretty damn sure he’s waited for her for forever.
But then again, he didn’t really admit this to himself, because soulmates are tricky things, the finality of them, of her, that scared him. It fucking terrified him truthfully, because he saw it him her grin that she was it for him, and there was so much life left to live before he admitted this.
