Janis, Madison Square Garden: like a leper messiah

i hate, and have every reason to hate, russia and putin (twice over, tfw you’re gay and the daughter of post-soviet jewish refugees) but i hate even more the way americans talk about russia as if it’s some far off distant evil place filled with strange people that can be a catch-all for everything going wrong in the world, as if all russians are mindless worshippers of putin who aren’t as politically diverse/informed/active as americans (alexei navalny’s recent arrest ring a bell?), and as if they aren’t just one of the groups suffering the most from putin’s regime. like do we really have to revert to mccarthy-esque attitudes that strip russian people of their humanity in order to criticize the actions their government?
