EVALUATION
The end result of my project is not what I anticipated from my Statement of Intent- my work definitely developed in unexpected ways. My original plan was to recreate an existing story but with a twist (The Legend of King Arthur but set in space for example), but after deciding against that, my new idea was to create something aimed at children and young teens, with inspiration taken from British folklore and fairytales. What I ended up creating however, had an original plot and a slightly darker atmosphere due to the older characters and target audience. I decided to go in this direction because it gave me greater freedom in terms of character design, and appealed to me more. An older audience also suited the platform, as digital comics would be more suited to people with experience using computers.
My work was also influenced a great deal by the research I did at the beginning of the project. I knew from the start which webcomics I wanted to look at, but a game called âLife is Strangeâ was one of the more unexpected additions to my research, and it helped me develop my initial design for my supporting character. My developmental process for my characters and story were mostly as I anticipated, although the end result wasnât something I predicted. I used a graphics tablet to create most of my work, however I also scanned in some parts that I found relevant. I did my storyboarding entirely digitally which I didnât plan on, but it came out well so it didnât matter. I had a few difficulties transferring panels into Adobe Flash whilst retaining quality, as well as creating buttons to go forward/backwards, but I solved these issues by moving the comic onto Microsoft Powerpoint, where I was able to implement these features without issue. I didnât expect to use Powerpoint at the beginning of the project- I decided to move my project to it when I was informed that our exhibition area didnât have internet access, and so my idea of hosting the Flash project online was abandoned in favour of something I could easily display without internet.
I used my time well and finished on time, but sometimes I would spend too long on details and would fall behind schedule, and have to work hard to catch up. If I did the project again, I would try to plan more effectively so as to leave time for the more time-consuming aspects of the project, which would allow me to remain ambitious without compromising on aspects of the project I had planned on doing. My teachers helped me quite a lot with time management, especially when getting me to move on from character designs and onto storyboarding. They also helped me explore ideas at the beginning of the project. I was also given advice from friends when naming the characters.
If I did my Final Major Project again, I might try to tell a slightly more abstract story, rather than a narrative which is explicit in telling the reader what is happening. It might be more interesting to let the reader draw their own conclusions about what happened, or to only show a slice of what is part of a larger mystery. As it is, I feel it could be improved through greater detail in the panels, and perhaps better planned dialogue, but I do feel that the end result is a good reflection of how I work- itâs quite straight-forward and not very abstract, and I put a lot of thought into the planning of the project. It also reflects the areas of art that I am interested in- namely illustration, although I havenât done a lot of sequential illustration before so this was something that helped push me outside of my comfort zone somewhat. This does reflect in my work, and you can see I spent a lot of time on character designs and the âcoverâ, so overall Iâd say this is a good representation of my work.
