Okay, decent page count! At least it's more than the 14 or 16 pages we got in some of the older chapters. Maybe that means more Undertaker and Modri content.
The Princess Glow debate: history, justice, and the cycle of resentment
⚠️This blog will contain spoilers for TWST Book 8 Part 3/Chapter 3 (JP only content)⚠️
Introduction
The Princess Glow is a special stone that used to be attached to Maleanor’s scepter and had healing abilities. After the defeat of Maleanor, the Princess Glow was under the possession of the Bladevale, attached to a golden cup, and was passed on to a mage named Ambrose. It eventually became (or is hypothesized/rumored to be) part of the interscholastic tournament’s trophy.
After Trein’s findings about the whereabouts of the Princess Glow, the rumor that the Princess Glow was part of the tournament’s trophy spread through NRC. It eventually reached the ears of Malleus and Lilia and they were called by Crowley and Trein to discuss the right of its possession.
Following Book 8 Chapter 3, many fans expected Malleus and Lilia to react angrily upon learning that Princess Glow had become part of the interscholastic tournament trophy.
In this blog, I’ll mention fan expectations of their reactions, what actually happened in Book 8 Chapter 3, alternative interpretations, and my analysis.
✅I’ll refer to Maleanor’s magical gem as the Princess Glow, the original JP term, despite its EN localization Majestic Ember.
Fan expectations
Many fans expected outrage from Malleus and Lilia.
The Princess Glow originally belonged to the Briar Valley royal family, specifically Princess Maleanor. Given TWST's recurring themes of injustice and historical discrimination against fae, many assumed Malleus and Lilia would demand its return.
Some fans argued they were simply suppressing their emotions because they occupy important political positions, especially Malleus, and have to think about the future rather than acting impulsively.
Others criticized the writing, with a few even questioning whether a Japanese writing team could appropriately portray themes resembling colonialism or cultural appropriation.
What actually happened
Instead of demanding the artifact back, Malleus proposed reclaiming it by winning the interscholastic tournament (Book 8, Chapter 47).
Dialogue: “The Princess Glow should belong to the victor. We simply have to win the interscholastic tournament and claim it through our victory. Isn’t that right?”
He also revealed that the Princess Glow originally belonged to the diurnal fae before Princess Maleanor and even Queen Maleficia. Lilia responded by emphasizing that history is shaped by perspective and that tracing ownership indefinitely only perpetuates resentment.
Alternative interpretations
Some fans argued that Lilia's response reflected lessons learned from Maleanor's death. Having witnessed the consequences of fighting for pride, he may have come to value survival and the protection of future generations over symbolic revenge, which he may have taught to Malleus (and Silver). Likewise, Malleus's proposal to win the Princess Glow through the tournament was interpreted as consistent with his responsibilities as Briar Valley's future ruler.
Others praised the scene because both characters acknowledged the complicated nature of history instead of reducing it to "take back what was ours."
My analysis
One thing that stood out to me was that many fans projected an expected emotional response onto Malleus and Lilia. Since fans know the historical injustice behind the Princess Glow, some assumed that anger or demands for restitution would be the "correct" reaction. However, I think their responses are consistent with both their characterization and the themes presented in the chapter.
Lilia has lived through war as the General of the Right, witnessed Princess Maleanor's death, and experienced centuries of political and historical change. Similarly, Malleus was speaking not only as an individual but as Briar Valley's future ruler. Rather than reacting emotionally, both approached the issue with the responsibility expected of leaders. Malleus's proposal to reclaim the Princess Glow through the interscholastic tournament reflects confidence without escalating the situation into a political conflict.
Lilia's dialogue from Book 8 Chapter 47 especially stood out to me.
Dialogue: “If the storyteller changes, then justice and evil easily trade places. That is the nature of history.” “If we continue tracing the past to ask 'who originally owned it,' the cycle of resentment will never end.”
Rather than dismissing Briar Valley's loss, these lines acknowledge how complicated history can become. Lilia recognizes that if every generation continues asking who "originally" owned something, resentment never truly ends. His comment about justice and evil changing depending on the narrator also suggests that historical events are remembered differently by those on opposing sides. I think this perspective feels fitting for someone who has personally witnessed centuries of history rather than simply read about it.
The revelation that the Princess Glow originally belonged to the diurnal fae reinforces this idea. Instead of presenting ownership as a straightforward matter, the story introduces another historical layer that complicates the question of who has the strongest claim. In that context, Malleus's decision to win the Princess Glow through fair competition feels symbolic. Rather than repeating the cycle of conflict, he chooses to create a new piece of history through peaceful means. Because of this, I find it difficult to interpret the scene as the writers ignoring history. Instead, they seem to be emphasizing that remembering the past and deciding how to respond to it are two different things.
Conclusion
Some fans interpret Malleus and Lilia's calm response as unrealistic given the Princess Glow's history. Another reading is that their reaction reflects Lilia's long-held belief that survival is more important than pride, a lesson born from Malleanor's death. While later chapters may clarify their feelings, the current text leaves room for both interpretations.
Rather than providing a simple answer, Book 8 Chapter 3 presents history as layered and contested. Through Lilia's reflections, the chapter suggests that historical injustice should be remembered, but that responding to it is rarely straightforward. Malleus and Lilia's decision doesn’t erase Briar Valley's past; instead, it reflects a belief that the future should not be shaped by repeating cycles of resentment.
Whether fans agree with their approach or not, the Princess Glow debate highlights how TWST encourages discussion about history, leadership, and justice rather than offering easy moral resolutions. That complexity is what made this scene one of the most interesting moments of Book 8’s most recent update for me.
happy father's day book 7 made me cry
I love that we are finally getting day and night fae lore and what happened to them to have such an animosity towards each other.
We learned that night fae came from a colder climate (northern area) to the area BV is currently at and because of differences between laws and environments etc they didn’t get along and eventually that led to a war where night fae won and maleficia ended up with the princess glow and the castle that meleanor inhabited. The origin of the land isn’t known because the squabble has been going on for a while.
If they had a war, it would also explain why Lilia became an orphan wouldn’t it? Why he was found trying to survive and why maleficia also took him in.
It would make sense in that regard why after years of uneasiness, why the day fae would side with the humans to get back what they believed was their right.
And because twst loves laying the down hints in front of us, we can see hints of this already in book 7.
Wild rose castle was white and bright colors, the dark fae think of black as the royal colors. As we see here on the inside:
So it makes sense that the castle used to belong to day fairies.
And this is probably why meleanor got the labeled of being evil because of the past wars and when the day fairies saw that the humans might be able to help them they took that chance to team up.
This would also explain how knight of dawn ended up with the ring which had a stone that came from the same mine as the princess glow and it also explains how the humans knew the healing properties of the princess glow too. It would be beneficial to them both to team against the night fae. One would get the stone to heal the king and the other would get their lands/homes back.
There’s also the hint that night fae/other fae immigrated from other lands in book 7 too during Lilia’s travels.
We see here during Lilia’s travel, he came across a castle that was long since abandoned. A castle from legends, so the origin and events Lilia would not be privy too.
Notice how the colors (yes I know it’s a reused background but still they used this one specially for a reason and endless Halloween was an event where malleus and lilia took a main role in the background), are dark colors. Could this be a hint that this was the castle the night fae abandoned before going to BV?? Or just one of many places night faes kind moved to different areas to find a new place to live??
Twst loves its hints and its parallels so it’s interesting to see the story hints showing up again. It’s fun to see what was in front of us. I think there’s more to learn about the fae history so I can’t wait until we learn more about both sides.
Not only that, but we got hint as far as the ghost bride event where Eliza speaks of dying because her home was invaded leaving her with regrets.
So we see again how events and main story parallel.
Seeing how Lilia talks about the cycle of wars and how long it’s been, no wonder he advocates for peace between all species. No wonder he taught the boys to get along with others because literally look at what centuries of wars have not only cost him but also others in the past.
The side who wins, who’s good and evil, changes depending on who you ask. It’s a repeated cycle. That’s how history is. The story changes. Who knows what is truth and isn’t.
This is why it’s important that Malleus heeded Lilia’s advice and tries to get along with humans and why Sebek and Silver are his knights as well. Because they’ll bring the change that he’s been trying to bring (along with him and his future school ambitions)
Malleus the king who learns and is more open to humans. Silver, a past prince and human who is close to malleus and isn’t one to hesitate to have his opinions known and be the middle man. Sebek who represent the love of a fae and human, who is very loyal and also stepped up to help his lord.
This is also why fairy gala if is such an important event too because we see first hand that peace is possible between different species.
Really enjoying how the events and main story are so intricately entwined 🥰🥰💞💞

Hi Ego! I’m not sure if my first message went through about a week ago, so I’m trying again! As a fellow Twst-er and Diasomnia lover, I really want to get into making fan art and comics like you do. Although, I’m not exactly sure how you manage to come up with such amazing ideas and drawings so fast, so if you have any tips (from you or the Dia-fam) I would love you FOREVER! (Which I already do because your art is iconic but still.)
oh no, I don't think I got it, thank you for resending!! 💚 it is always kinda hard to talk about where ideas come from so I'm not sure how helpful this'll be, but one of my favorite things to do -- and bonus, is always a good fallback for when you're feeling the urge to do something but can't think of what -- is to start out with like...adapting a particular scene or moment or whatever that sticks out to me. just thinking about how I would draw the characters and what they'd be doing, and any extra little jokes or acting I can add, that kinda stuff! I'm not an especially original person so having a kind of jumping-off point actually works a lot better for my brain. :B and half the time it spirals into being something totally removed from the original point anyway (and also twice as long and with more characters and, well, I can't complain when I do this to myself I guess).
although it also helps to just be. incapable of not constantly thinking about The Characters and connecting them to literally everything. so when someone says 'driving' while I'm busy thinking about Diasomnia (which is any given moment) and my brain goes 'ha ha diasomnia. driving. what if' and the next thing I know I've done this (sorry)
What's everyone's favourite flowers that aren't like. The normal ones. Like everyone's a fan of roses and sunflowers what's a more niche one. One you don't get in gift sets. Mine's sweet peas
