first LOOONGG post in a while! took me long enough to get around to this translation… almost a whole ass month…. oh well. getting this out before there’s a whole flood of new SHINee content to talk about and translate. anyways! the comedian Kim Shin-Young (pictured above hosting Show Champion) told this story on her radio show with TRAX’s Jungmo (reminder that TRAX is also under SM) when they were introducing “Juliette”. she’s mentioned it before (I think it was probably when taemin was on her show? but I don’t remember for sure) but idk, the whole story just hit different this time. if you want to listen to them tell this story, it’s their 01/29/2021 broadcast, starting from around 44:20.

Kim Shin-Young: From Replay, to Ring Ding Dong, Lucifer, Sherlock… they were never ordinary. To be honest, it is because SHINee exists that a lot of unique boy groups are coming out these days. They were the pioneers. And among music critics, there were those that said, “After Seo Taeji, idol music is over.” But when SHINee’s music came out, they realized, “Oh, the next generation of idols are coming.”

Kim Jungmo: But SHINee is really….

Kim Shin-Young: SHINee really did something big.

Kim Jungmo: …. Even at this time [Juliette-era] they would go from work to the practice room, back to work, and back to the practice room.

Kim Shin-Young: Yes, they really did.

Kim Jungmo: They practiced to the point where you thought, “Oh, they really practice that much?!” They really practiced soooo hard.

Kim Shin-Young: There’s something that I still remember. Taemin, in his school uniform… they were all high school students at the time, besides Onew, who had just turned 20 (Korean age)… at this time, Jonghyun was there. Taemin was learning how to sing from Jonghyun.

Kim Jungmo: That’s right, at the time…

Kim Shin-Young: They were teaching and learning from each other.

Kim Jungmo: Taemin came into SM when he was a middle-school student, so his voice hadn’t changed yet. So even when they debuted, he had almost no singing parts. But he had the ambition to sing, and he wanted to do well…

Kim Shin-Young: He really practiced a lot.

Kim Jungmo: After his voice matured, whenever I went to the company, I could only hear Taemin’s voice in the hallways, or in the bathrooms. He really practiced… even now…

Kim Shin-Young: The move disease didnt just appear out of nowhere.

Kim Jungmo: I still tell the people around me that even though Taemin is much younger than me, I really respect him.

Kim Shin-Young: He really is someone worth respecting. Back then, he was all like “Hyung, hyung, how do you do this… do you sing it like this?” And he and Jonghyun, the two of them in their school uniforms, would talk about this and that. I remember that was so cute to me.
