“Hey, Shino, I’m going to grab a cup of coffee since it seems calm right now. Want something?”

His colleague doesn’t answer and Kiba takes it as a no before jumping out of their ambulance. He stretches, shakes his legs that are slightly asleep. He’s used to his early morning routine but he always had trouble staying in the ambulance too long; the boy likes bigger spaces than the passenger seat, quite honestly. He’s working on it, okay, he’s going to get this license sooner or later. 

Whistling as he walks through the door of the ER service of Konoha Hospital, Kiba greets a few people here and there – mostly nurses he has been flirting with for a little while and that think they’re alone on his list of conquests –, a slight grin on his face as he makes his way to the coffee machine, next to the cafeteria.

It’s a rule among paramedics to avoid the cafeteria out of their break hours; duty sometimes calls when you’re sipping your cup of coffee and you don’t want to be somewhere where people can slow your run to your vehicle. So the coffee machine is okay, because no one actually likes automatic coffee machine’s coffee. It tastes more like hot water than anything else, but hey, it gets the job done.

As he finally gets a sight of his caffeinated best friend, he also sees a long cascade of blonde hair in front of it, leading to a white doctor coat… and honestly, quite a nice view. Well, it seems like someone else than the paramedics drink the hot water from the machine. He approaches, heavy footsteps due to his boots.

Too many.

Ino holds the warmth in her hands as she feels someone approach. It’s sugar and caffeine and hot. Just what she needs.

“What a lovely day for some hot water with a slight flavor of caffeine and a pinch of fake cream, am I right?”

The voice behind her isn’t malicious. It’s not spiteful, like some other residents might be. It’s.... almost on the same wavelength.

Almost.

Ino whips — and, literally whips —around.

“I. Am Not. In the Mood.” she hisses. Somehow she finds Kiba, directly.

His face, his hair, his eyes are to kill for.

her voice is like daggers. what was a yelling match becomes a silent war. he doesn’t have anything to answer that, nothing to counter her. no way to fix this. his eyes show hurt for a quarter of a second, before darkening. closing the doors, ready to defend. it’s a defense mechanism; she got to see vulnerability, she will not see anymore. he will become a stranger in less than a minute. his hand was around her wrist trying to keep her from fleeing. slowly, his fingers unwrap from her soft skin. they almost linger, trying to drink up the last bit of touch from her he’ll get… probably ever. one hand reaches his pocket, the other balls into a fist. he takes a step back.

“fine,” he answers, cold. he knows she can hear how much she just destroyed with those three words. and she knows because she has learned to read him. “if that’s what you want.”
