zahrah has a very straight forward “if you want change then change” mentality and odette is in a “i want change but i can’t have it without severe consequences” situation. while the two were secretly dating, odette would often complain to zahrah about how unjust her parents were being and how they didn’t respect her boundaries. zahrah would listen but it took all she had not to tell her to leave. i actually have a dialogue wip for this that i wanna share !! havent written the rest because im lazy so its just dialogue
O: “My mother. I can’t believe her!”
O: “As soon as Jean-Claude moved, she apparently thought it her obligation to set me up with someone else. Isn’t that crazy?!”
(for info jean claude and odette were fake dating. NOT an actual ship i swear they are very good friends. they only did it to stop their parents from talking. they both are in the same situation iykwim)
Z: “Yeah. Very crazy. Weird too.”
O: “Exactly! She cannot stand the idea of me getting an ounce of independence I guess.”
Z: “How long has that been going on?”
O: “Forever. I think it’s the way her parents raised her and now she’s continuing tradition. I really don’t understand it.”
O: “Plus, not to mention, it’s only benefitting them. For social status and what not. I have no clue who these guys are until they’re in my house!”
O: “This is the son of so and so whose familiar with our family through so and so! It’s ridiculous!”
Z: “Why do you keep putting up with it then?”
O: “I have to. I don’t really have a choice not to.”
Z: “You always have a choice.”
O: “Zahrah, you haven’t met my parents. I don’t have a choice.”
Z: “Sure. I’m not saying that I know what it’s like, I’m just saying that if you hate it this much then at least try to do something about it.”
O: “I wish it were that easy.”
this ultimately becomes the reason they split because odette tries to make zahrah change so she would be approved of by her parents. oh, and the fact she called her just a “friend” 👀👀👀👀 girlllll…. also odette eventually does make the change and it does in fact come with consequences. anyways sooo odette couldve made the change long ago but she was too afraid to do it and face the reality of it all siggghhhh its okay odette me too me too
and really zahrah said all that shit because she was frustrated that odette kept talking about other people to her and started to become scared that she might leave her. not a win win situation i guess
