I love how this also recontextualizes the treatment Arei recieved from her sisters. I would bet good money they joined in on bullying Arei because they wanted to be accepted by their new peers. They didn't want people to look at them the same way they looked at Arei, and the easiest way they could avoid that was to join in on the bullying. 'Hello new American classmates. See, we are just like you, we also think our little sister is pathetic and stupid. Please do not see us the same way you see her, we can fit in with you.' Like. It's still a horrible thing for them to do of course, especially to keep it up for years, but it makes sense for two kids trying to avoid getting targetted to take an attitude like that. racists gotta die
