Theon has been tortured into becoming Reek, an identity forced on him by his tormentor, ramsay bolton. he seems beyond saving, until his sister tries to save him, he is reminded of his real identity, slowly memories come back to him but will he have it in him to defeat Ramsay and take back his real name….

I agree, he has never trully been himself. He always had to pretend to be something he's not so that someone would accept him, yet no one did. 

He wanted to be a part of the Stark family but everyone reminded him he's just a prisoner.So he always smiled and acted like he wasn't hurt. 

He wanted to feel loved by his father, but he refused him. So he pretended he didn't care about betraying the starks. 

He wanted to feel respected from the ironborn, yet they mocked him. So once again he pretended to be cruel and heartless as "a true ironborn should be" to earn their trust. 

And now he's captured by Ramsay where he's forced to become a whole other person. And at the point he has almost lost himself completely and transformed into Reek, he is once again forced to act like Theon Greyjoy to get Moat Cailin so that he can please Ramsay.

The only moments where he reveals his true self are those where he feels regret for his actions. (confessing to Maester Luwin after the sack of Winterfell and Ramsay before he returns to the torture chamber)

So I believe the phrase "I came too far to pretend to be anything else" when Maester Luwin told him that he's not the man he's pretending to  be, was fairly acurate.
