it's been a longgg time since i've read original frankenstein but i've seen some critique of the movie that the creature and victor aren't nuanced enough as mary shelley wrote them, the creature is "good" and victor is "bad", but i don't necessarily agree. i think victor does go pretty quickly into treating the creature like shit, but we still do see soft "fatherly" moments between them and we also see the creature fuck up these random sailors repeatedly for no reason which communicates his rage hasn't put him in the right either. there's other ways the movie obviously strays from the novel but i think the core message is still there and it's a beautifully crafted film
