Nel 1817 l’astronomo Gilij pose una rosa dei venti e una meridiana alla base dell’obelisco, utilizzando quest’ultimo come “gnomone” (così si chiama la parte dell’orologio solare che proietta la propria ombra segnando l’ora). Una fascia di granito rosso fu collocata sul selciato e sopra di essa furono appoggiati 7 dischi marmorei. I due alle estremità segnalano il momento in cui l’ombra della croce sopra l’obelisco cade nei due solstizi dell’anno (il 22 giugno e il 22 dicembre). Mentre i restanti 5 indicano il passaggio del sole nei segni zodiacali rappresentati. Blocchetti di serpentino rosso e verde adornano la rosa dei venti, formando il caratteristico selciato romano. Ecco perché si chiamano “sanpietrini”: vennero realizzati per la prima volta in questa piazza.
