Clélie Crossing the Tiber

Description
The subject is taken from Plutarch's Life of Publicola (chap. xxv): Clelia is among the twenty hostages (including ten young girls) handed over by the Roman consul Valerius Publicola to Porsenna, king of the Etruscans, in order to guarantee a truce. But Clelia encouraged her companions to flee by crossing the Tiber, herself on horseback, the other young girls swimming. Livy also reports the episode, but indicates that Clelia swam across the river (Roman History, II, 13).
Publicola handed Clelia over to the Etruscans, fearing that her escape would jeopardize the truce. But Porsenna, struck by the young girl's courage, set her free, even offering her one of his horses, "covered with rich harness," as a sign of respect and admiration. By the 17th century, Clélie had become a model of a "strong woman" through her courage and determination.
