“In today’s society, looks are everything. The way we look in others people’s eyes gives them the impression of who we are. If you have a certain look, people will think you’re a certain kind of person. If people make judgments about you just based upon your looks and they don’t even get a chance to know who you are, they are being prejudice. That is one of the biggest problems society faces, and it’s one of the problems I face on a daily basis. About 5 years ago I had developed psoriasis and over the years it had started to spread all over my body. I was most noticeable on my hair line, around my ears and my arms. Since this was a starting to take over a big portion of my body, it was the first things that people saw when they first meet me. I’m going to be honest and say this disease doesn’t look pretty. It looks unappealing and there were many people who try to stay away from me. People wouldn’t shake my hand when I first met them, they wouldn’t sit next to me on the bus, and others started talking behind my back calling me a freak or a weirdo. One thing that people should know is that this disease is not contagious; I am perfectly healthy and just a normal person, but people never get to know that. They never get to know that I like to play volleyball; they never get to know I’m a successful college student, and they never get to know how much fun I could really be. They judge me before they get to know me. People need to overcome prejudice and it takes everyone’s effort to stop it. In the picture above, it is my personal way to overcome people’s prejudice. Over the years I’m become confident with who I am. I stopped hiding my incurable disease and if people ask about, I don’t mind telling them. I show it off so people know the severity of it. If I can make people more aware of what my disease is, they can stop making assumptions before they get a chance to know me. Overcoming prejudice depends on others as well. If people see someone who has some kind of physical aspect that looks different, don’t just assume they are any less of a person. Get a chance to know that person before you make any assumptions about them. They could be one of the nicest people in the world, but being prejudice and judging them before meeting them, can stop you from knowing that. Don’t make assumptions and get the chance to know others that seem to be different; you may learn a thing or two”
