  Purpose:

Five Flags Company, Inc. started in response to the inability of entrepreneurs to obtain credit from financial lending institutions.  What were their major roadblocks?  Companies’ credit scores had fallen and they no longer had the credit required to expand.  The banks needed to increase their own credit before they could make the needed loans.

     Inspired by the work of Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize winner of 2006 and Congressional Gold Medal winner of 2013, we decided to follow in his footsteps and use micro-finance to empower women entrepreneurs to obtain credit and reduce poverty throughout the world.  The seeds of Five Flags were planted.

       Five Flags Company, Inc. originated  with the CEO, Marjorie Pugliese and three board members, Katrina Caras, Spencer Cook and James Zepp to strengthen small business owners in Staten Island, New York.  The principal focus will be women entrepreneurs.

      As late as 2012, we took photographs of 17 small businesses on one mile of one block in Staten Island, all of which had been closed for over a year - in some cases, three years. Increased taxes, rents, inventory costs, marketing expenses, transportation, and more caused this slowdown.  Access to credit was still unavailable.
