The Pledge by N.C. Wyeth
Do you have $2? I promise I’ll use it responsibly.
Carter was relaxing in his room when his Pledge Master let himself in.
“Hello, Pledge.” Carter immediately sprung out of bed. His mind went blank, body in autopilot. He saluted his Master.
“Pledge C ready for commands, Master.”
“Good Pledge. On your knees and suck me.”
“Yes, Master.”
I am yours. And you are mine.

The Oath of Fealty in 1660
Artist: Nicolai Abildgaard (Danish, 1743-1809)
Date: 1806
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark
Description
In Danish history, oaths were crucial for binding loyalty, governance, and social order, evolving from Viking-era sworn vows on objects like arm-rings (though evidence is debated) to formalized medieval coronation charters called Håndfæstninger, which limited royal power and guaranteed rights for the nobility. These formal pacts, like the first written one by Erik Klipping in 1282, established written obligations between king and nobles, making them breakable by subjects, solidifying oaths as foundational to Danish political and social life.
