Visibility was extremely poor and conditions were unsafe
As you've likely heard by now, round 1 of the GT3 race was cancelled due to heavy rain from typhoon Wipha. Here's an update on what has happened so far.
Qualifying went fairly well for Yibo and Melvin. They qualified in 7th position overall for race 1 and 18th position for race 2 (of 30 cars).
Yibo has broken his own personal best lap time four times over the past few days:
Test 1 - 1:37.884
Free practice - 1:37.691
Qualifying - 1:37.322
Qualifying - 1:37.133
He's fun to watch. Just as when he was racing motorcycles, he's an assertive driver who is constantly pushing himself further.
As previously mentioned, race 1 was cancelled due to bad weather. The race has been tentatively rescheduled for tomorrow at 14:00. Let's hope the weather improves enough for the race to move forward.
You can still view the race livestream for the cancelled event. It's well worth watching, just to see the dramatic turn in the weather and the tenacity of so many fans getting absolutely drenched in the stands.
Many people have expressed shock and respect on social media for the devotion of Yibo's fans, who stayed in the stands through 33Β°C heat, high winds and torrential rain. No one moved until the race was declared cancelled.
Gaha Racing driver Ye Shuai said on XHS, "Gotta hand it to Yibo's fans. Mad respect, pouring rain and not a single person leaves? Salute. π«‘"

Dear spectators,
Due to the impact of Typhoon No. 12, Wipha, and based on the latest weather warnings, weather conditions on the morning of July 26 will not allow racing activities to be conducted safely. To ensure the safety of all participants and spectators, the race stewards have decided that the China GT Championship schedule on July 26 will begin after 14:00. The provisional schedule is as follows:
14:00 GT3 pit lane exit opens
14:15 GT3 Race
The GTC/GTS races will be held after the GT3 race, subject to weather conditions.
The race organizers will continue monitoring weather conditions at the circuit and conducting comprehensive on-site safety assessments. A final event update will be issued before 11:00 tomorrow. Please stay tuned to the official channels for further announcements.
The ticket inspection gates will not open before 11:00. Please plan your travel and arrival time accordingly.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this schedule change and appreciate your understanding.
As a side note, Yan Chuang rear-ended another car and crashed into the barrier, totalling his car and ending his race weekend. Many spectators were cheering. For someone who just a few days ago said, "In racing, results speak for themselves," karma is a bitch. π
