Happening Now: In the northern India state of Uttarakhand, the government has given an ultimatum to vacate villages in the catchment of the 120 MW Vyasi hydroelectric project on the Yumuna River. In the village of Lohari alone, 90 families will be forced to leave. In addition to these immediate impacts on communities, the environmental impacts are immense, not to mention the high risk of building hydroelectric projects in a region such as the Himalayas that are very prone to earthquakes, cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides. Hydroelectric dams are not ‘green’, nor are they socially and culturally responsible. There are alternatives and we cannot continue to hold on to historical agreements when the we have grown wiser to the human and environmental costs of dams.
