Day 168#: Indo-Pacific Tarpon
Today's animal of the day is the Indo-Pacific Tarpon (Megalops cyprinoides)!
Also known as the oxeye herring, despite not actually being a type of herring, this species of fish can be found in the Indo-Pacific along the coasts of South and Southeast Asia, Australia, Japan, and French Polynesia. They are the smaller of the two species of tarpon, and reach around 3.3 ft in length when fully grown. These fish will often travel closer to the coast when they're about to spawn, which they do twice a year, so their larvae can travel upstream and live in freshwater environments for the first few years of their lives.

Juveniles tend to be much smaller than the adults, usually only growing around 20 inches long, and will stay inland until they reach spawning age at around the age of two. Adult tarpon can live up to 44 years, and are an olive green color with silver scales on their sides. They are opportunistic feeders and in both fresh and saltwater environments will prey on a variety of crustaceans and smaller fish, as well as the occasional water plant.

This finally got finished too. Don't ask me how many layers it took for the colours to be this opaque on black paper and how difficult it was to get the last layers to stick to the paper ;)
To be completely honest: I did adjust the contrast of the photo a little bit to get the background this deep and uniformly black without any pencil strokes showing, because even though I used black paper I had to go over the whole background again with black coloured pencil to hide some lighter smudges. Which then in turn caused another kind of streaky texture. But the fish itself is quite close to how it looks under bright light. (In less bright light the metallic sheen is a bit more subdued too.)
