Down below the ramparts, I glimpse the Firstblade surveying the field. He turns his eyes up towards us for a moment, and his gaze catches at the sight of Jeran sitting on his own. I'm too far away to make out Aramin's face, but he stays standing there for a long beat, watching his Striker, until he finally turns away and continues his work.

The feirce light has gone from Aramin's eyes, leaving a concerned expression on his face. He looks like he wants to say something more to Jeran, then hesitates and decides against it.

"I'm all right," Jeran says before Aramin can speak. "Thank you." He wears a tight smile on his face, but his brows are knotted and his eyes glossy. His voice sounds hoarse with the effort of holding back tears.

Aramin's expression doesn't shift at the subtle insult to the Strikers, that we are nothing more than brutes sent to hold the monsters at bay, but I do see his arms stiffen, and his body turn subtly toward Jeran in a protective stance.

Finally, the Firstblade nods his approval and leaves the circle. Jeran watches him go, distracted, as the other Stikers begin to mill around.

The two move in sync, Aramin explaining as they go... It still surprises me that Aramin never asked Jeran to be his Shield.
