The fall

Recently I’ve introduced my son to Portal and he’s been loving it! He/we have finished Portal and are now into Portal 2. Because we’ve been so into it lately, I painted this picture of Chell.

He did, but he was alone in that. Either he didn’t try to warn anyone else or he did and no one believed him (my opinion is of the latter). He may have survived the initial attack but he was alone, exiled. Sometimes it’s almost better to die among people you know than live to watch them all turn into dust while you continue on. Not to mention the survivors guilt that probably came with it. Even before this he might have considered himself more or less a sucker because of his mental state. It’s not pleasant finding out you have an incurable mental disorder, even if it is manageable. It’s definitely possible he took a positive attitude through that, but after things went down at Aperture, the desire to feel hopeless would probably become very strong. Hence the feeling of having suckers luck.

I think both can be true at the same time. I like to think optimistically and that he got along with his coworkers, but even if he did it’s likely he felt different around them, and that would have created some level of distance. But whether he got along well with them or not I definitely think he would have felt guilty for surviving while no one else did, and I think that’s pretty evident in some of his murals (I would give a reference but I’m on mobile. I believe the mural I have in mind can be found in the den that the turret is guarding, with the turret opera underneath).
