Favorite ATLA Scene/Speech - ‘You were never even a player.’:

Azula: I can see your whole history in your eyes. You were born with nothing. So you’ve had to struggle and connive and claw your way to power. But true power, the divine right to rule, is something you’re born with. The fact is, they don’t know which one of us is going to be sitting on that throne and which one is going to be bowing down. But I know. And you know. Well?

Long Feng: You’ve beaten me at my own game.

The latter example is the only of its kind, illustrating of the extent of Korra’s decisiveness: she hesitates not in preparing to deliver a fatal final blow and end Tarrlok’s tyranny, and the Councilman survives only by dint of his puppeteering power, Bloodbending. This instance moves Korra far closer to the Azula’s paragon of goal-oriented confrontation, and materializes her morality as something much closer to an alignment of “lawful neutral,” certainly stepping towards Azula’s neutral or chaotic evil…

A comparison of the attacks: examine the intensity of these slicing Waterbending maneuvers, Katara’s uses a splayed, shifting sheet of Water, while Tarrlok unleashes a solid scythe. This is not merely a difference of style; rather it betrays intent. Katara wishes to threaten Azula, or establish herself as a threat to the Princess. Hers is a warning shot, and really she’s letting her opponent know, “watch out or I’ll bite.” Tarrlok, having just declared his animosity towards the Avatar and his intent to castigate her for her insolence, is aiming to kill his opponent. This is further demonstrated by how these ladies above must react to the projectiles: Azula merely sidesteps the attack, while Korra must dive from of the projectile’s pathway to save her skin.

One last exemplifying detail: Katara’s wall of Water dies shortly after presenting its threat to the Fire Princess; Tarrlok’s blade, after cleaving his exorbitant letter desk in two, continues on to obliterate his office bookshelf. That is some serious force exerted there! Had his attack landed, Korra would have almost certainly been decapitated - well, unless she executed some impossibly high-level, spontaneous, defensive Waterbending maneuver…though I cannot really contrive a viable deflection of this kind of projectile.
