Rarely do we talk about the privilege of having a supportive family. I'm finishing up my final weeks at USC for my Master's, have applied for 22 school counselor/college advisor positions in Southern California. I'm getting ready to move in with my life partner as she pursues her dreams in veterinary medicine. I'm thinking about going for my doctorate at UCLA next year.
Meanwhile, I have an absent father and a mother who has spent the last year and a half trying to convince me to "stay home" because LA is "dangerous", while she talks behind my back to other family members that "this won't last" and eventually I'll come back home. I've done it, I've been doing it, and will continue to do it. If I start my doctorate next year, I'll have Dr. in front of my name at 29 years old, something that no one with my name has done. Watch me.
