I was looking for this! Because--well, because it's gay, but also because it's this early display of Glinda both understanding Elphaba and using her social power to reframe her in a more palatable light. Elphaba has just chastised Glinda (correctly) for refusing to let go of Dr. Dillamond's mispronunciation of her name, but Elphaba's done so in a way that very clearly spills all of her own feelings of isolation out into the open. (paraphrasing here: "Perhaps the pronunciation of your name is not the sole focus of Dr. Dillamond's life. Perhaps some of us are just...different.") So it gets super awkward because Elphaba has inadvertently shown a true vulnerability to the entire classroom of students who hate her.
