While you don't get to choose your family, you do get to choose the other folks that you allow into your life. You should demand respect from them all. But, if you're like me and from a family that largely doesn't give a fuck about your feelings, the least you can do is not tolerate other folks who do the same. Why punish yourself twice? Distance yourself from the difficult relatives (as much as you can). And if you can't communicate honestly and receive what you need/deserve from the "friends", spouses or even colleagues that treat you this way...let them go. Who needs that kind of stress? Why volunteer yourself for such abuse? Life is far too short for the bullshit.
