Some "The Social Network II" speculation incoming. Feels like a big drama happening behind the scenes. The whole thing genuinely looks like a fever dream. First, Fincher's non-involvement and the way Jesse Eisenberg's refusal to come back is phrased (it's a no, because Fincher is not directing). Like putting it like this makes it sound like Sorkin is not as good of a director AND this project needs Fincher to make it worth doing. His refusal to come back kind of comes out of nowhere, since Jesse was pretty positive about doing the sequel until very recently (like a few months ago recently). Sounds like there is some sort of beef between Fincher and Sorkin to me. If creative parents of the project are fighting, children end up being forced to choose, and Jesse chose Fincher (of course he did, first of all, this man launched his career and hand-picked him out of the entire young Hollywood for this role, AND Fincher is one of the best directors out there. Seriously, the way Jesse talks about Fincher like some sort of modern god of cinema. Not surprising that he backed out the moment he found out Fincher is not involved.) Also, this whole Jeremy Strong casting thing is a weird choice because surely there are other actors in Hollywood who have some physical resemblance with Z*ckerberg. This choice is strange until you remember that Jeremy Strong is friends with Sorkin, and if you think about it as a last minute choice after Jesse backed out, it make sense. What is weird, is why this whole thing was not planned and discussed in advance? Surely Sorkin knows how iconic the first movie is, enough to not call the second movie a sequel even though it has nothing tying it to the original, besides the topic of facebook. If nothing connects the original and the new one, then calling it a sequel sounds like you are trying to ride the wave of previous installment success to create hype, while also not inviting the person (Fincher) who is majorly responsible for the said success. This makes it look like Sorkin did not expect Jesse to say no, so he didn't have a plan B, hence calling the film the sequel (makes sense if he thought the main guy from the original film will show up.) Anyway, this whole situation does not look good, and comes off pretty unpleasant. This whole mess could have been avoided if Sorkin sorted out whatever creative differences he had with Fincher BEFORE setting to make this film. Now the "sequel" lost the majority of ingredients of the recipe for its original's success and I don't think it should have been made at all, or at least not introduced as a sequel. It could have easily been a separate totally unrelated movie about another facebook scandal. There was no need to tie it to "The Social Network" at all.
