A major icon of the 1950’s, pioneering the Rock and Roll genre and becoming a symbol of popular culture in America, being called the King of Rock and Roll. Presley was born on January 8th, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, being a shy "mamas boy" as a kid who lived in poverty with his parents. Throughout his past, Elvis was exposed to many different genres of music like Gospel, country, R&B and Blues, eventually taking these inspirational genres and using them in future recordings. Presley brought Rock and Roll to the mainstream in the 1950’s, introducing a mixture of segregated genres to white audiences. With his unique attire, voice, and charisma, Elvis had caught the attention of many teens, giving them a style of their own and inspiring them to rebel against the norms of their time. He starred in movies, television shows, and even made his mark in the American marketplace with many pieces of merchandise. But a long time of prescribed substance abuse and other medical issues had eventually taken his life on August 16, 1977. But despite this, Elvis Presley’s legacy continues to thrive in the hearts of his fans, who crowned him as the “King of Rock and Roll”

The American Civil War took the lives of many men across the country, leaving people to mourn the loss of friends, family members and other loved ones all around the United States when it ended in 1865. As time went on, national cemeteries were built for these fallen soldiers with locals going around to clean and decorate the graves of the soldiers who had lost their lives in the war, with a large commemoration ceremony being held by formerly enslaved people in Charleston, South Carolina where they properly buried the bodies of fallen soldiers who had died in a prison. In 1868, Major General John A. Logan had declared that the 30th of May would be “Decoration Day” which was a national holiday dedicated to honoring the soldiers that died in the civil war by decorating their graves. Finally in 1971, congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which moved the date from May 30th to May 25th to allow workers to have a 3 day weekend.
