first of all, i had been told and recommended this show because it was gay. because there were lesbians, right. and technically there are…… but what are we talking about. There is one gay sex scene and it’s fucking montage bullshit. and, here’s the real kicker that no everyone failed to mention. One of the main characters IS A WHOLE PREDATOR.

the main, antagonist? i guess, her framing goes back and forth, has an explicitly shown, sexual relationship with an 18 year old boy, and it is very clear that she is grooming him. There is scene, where she tries to stop the relationship and his reaction nearly send me into tears, it was so sad.

This isn’t inherently a negative in on show. My opinion on the show as it stands is that what starts out as a very good reflection of republican, ultra christian, small town America turned into your typical commercialized slop. By the end my girlfriend and i agreed that it reminded us of the housemaid.

Even with all the trauma olympics that’s played, what’s different about the other girls compared to shauna is that they all have shared experience and shared trauma. They all crashed in the plane, most have lost someone or watched someone they cared about die, they’ve all participated in a hunt and ate someone. Even when it comes to Shauna’s birth, they’ve ALL experienced it, they have the shared experience of watching shauna go through that.

But shauna? She has the single unique experience of loosing a child. Of horrifically loosing a child, being neglected by the only adult there, who was their health teacher. Her child is then used as a religious sacrificial lamb, then she’s further isolated by her post partum psychosis.

Lottie gives herself to Shauna to let out her immediate anger, and despite the fact that all the girls sit by and let that happen, she is further isolated, because now she is feared. Then she’s assigned to be the butcher, and has to dismember Javis body mere weeks after she lost her own child. Her role as the butcher further isolating her.

Then she’s given no real support, no grace and her child is still being used as a prop. she is completely and utterly alone in a way that none of those other girls are. So she leans in to the thing that can grant her control, which is violence and rage.
