THERE IS WATER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN CARRY THE WATER REMOVE THE WATER
Actually! This was a very clever setup by a team of divers in the Arctic, I believe. The person is upside down, their bouyancy belt calibrated just so that they are slightly lighter than water, and able to walk upside down on the ice. In the first segment, when his mask vents, watch the bubbles flow DOWNWARD, which is really the up that we know. Science is really fricking cool!
AO3 icons for WIPs, oh my!
So, as you guys know, AO3 has those icons that indicate whether a story is complete or not. Thereās the āthis story is completeā icon:Ā
And thereās the āthis story is incompleteā icon:
But āincompleteā is a really, really broad category, and WIPs are incomplete for lots and lots of reasons, right? I bet many authors wish they could put a little more nuance into that statement, in order to better communicate details to their readers, and I bet readers would totally appreciate that. I think AO3 should do away with the trite old circle with a bar through it, and give the authors access to some more flexibility and detail! So, I thought about some of the things an author might want to say about a storyās āincompleteā status, and I came up with some new icons!Ā
First, the āstill writing!ā ones:
āIām still writing this story!ā (This would be the default icon for a WIP)
āIām still writing this story, and I promise I will post a new chapter⦠just as soon as I figure out whatās going to happen next.āĀ
āIām still writing this story, but Iāve just realized that it has to be much, much, MUCH longer than I originally thought, and Iām currently rearranging everything.ā
āI SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD I will finish this story even though the last time I posted an update was 2 ½ years ago.ā
And then the ānot writing anymoreā ones:
āSorry, Iām not writing this story anymore.ā
āSorry, Iām not writing this story anymore because fuck that show/movie/book/fandom right in its fucking faceā
(of course we wanna be multi-racial, so there are some options for this one):
(And multi-cultural!)
āSorry, Iām not writing this story anymore because Iāve been sucked into a new fandom and have already written 37 stories for it!ā
āSorry, Iām not writing this story anymoreābut if someone else wants to take over and continue the story, Iām fine with that!ā
And one I canāt believe AO3 didnāt put into use years ago:
āWELP I DUNNO YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE YOU FOLLOWED A WIP OF YOUR OWN FREE WILL LOLā
If youāre the kind of person who spends the first ten minutes of the Lyft ride to the airport worrying that you accidentally left the oven onāeven if you didnāt even use the oven that dayāyou can quell your anxious brain with a quick smartphone precaution.
ā¦before leaving the house, take a photo of your stove and oven dialsāor your thermostat, or your iron, or anything else you worry about accidentally leaving on. If your brain starts to play the āDid I really turn it offā game, you can simply tap your photo app and see for yourself
Reblogging to save a life
this is a good strategy
I can imagine this being incredibly helpful for some people with OCD, as well as folks like me with anxiety disorders combined with ADHD (so lack of executive function which leads to frequently forgetting things which leads to legitimizing the fears from the anxiety since a lot of the time I DID forget The Thingā¦)
a lecturer of mine the other day said something that i canāt stop thinking about. as we were walking out of the room, he said, āremember, as you approach your assignments in these last few months, that writing is a gas. plan and act accordinglyā.Ā
i had no idea what this meant, and when i asked him to explain he said something that absolutely blew my mind.Ā
he said, between solids, liquids and gases, a gas is the only state of matter that completely fills the vessel in which it is kept. out of these three, only a gas can entirely fill a given space - no matter itās size or shape.Ā
so writing is gas, because (if you consider yourself a writer) no matter how long youāre given to write something, you will almost always find yourself writing or editing that piece of work, until the very last moment in which it is due.Ā
therefore, writing is a gas because fills up all the time that it is given.Ā
writing is a gas because it takes up all the space it is allowed.Ā
Iām seeing a lot of talk on Rupi Kaur and itās something Iāve been thinking about for several months now. Here are my thoughts.
I donāt ever assert my artistic opinions as universal - Iām not here to comment on people enjoying her poetry - but that Rupi managed to very obviously plagiarize Nayyirah, disrespect Nayyirah in the confrontation process, and then continue her business and collect acclamation while her poetry doesnāt compare to many big āinternetā poets let alone WOC poets outside of the blogosphere (in depth, complexity, or form)ā¦.is frustrating.Ā
There is such thing as artistic simplicity but the simplicity of Rupiās poems doesnāt concern me - you can achieve minimalism andĀ emotional weight (and avoid plagiarism). Rupiās tone, rhythm, meter, and vocabulary - let alone sense of sincerity or sense of deliberation or fundamental things like line breaks - are exceptionally limited and disjointed, and her book is not uniform (suggesting that this limit isnāt intentional). Meanwhile, much of her good syntax and specific imagery is lifted from poets like Nayyirah and Warsan.
And yet: my local B&N has at least 30 copes of āmilk and honeyā while it carries max 2 copies of any other poet, including classics. Sheās a bestseller. I donāt know how but Rupi Kaur somehow surpassed the phenomenon of white mediocrity in poetry (possibly through tokenization + manipulation of online spaces) to promote woc mediocrity, and as a woc poet/artist I Canāt Abide.Ā
There are amazing immigrant/diasporic poets out there (especially q/tpoc and Black women poets) writing on the same subjects but with, like, degrees for which they labored and labored to pay, and/or drawing from specific suffering & finding no love in the publishing world. And frankly these poets tend to be community workers - tend to be involved with artistic and activist communities - and applying what they write about to practice. Rupi can do whatever the fuck she wants (excepting plagiarism) but I donāt have respect for her or her work.
i feel like she would be better at writing (original) prose rather than poetry. because her poems just seem like she wrote prose and then pressed enter in random spots like theres no sense of the words functioning as⦠little building blocks or threads that pull the poem together. you know what i mean
Agreed!! Iāve also been musing about whether she takes cues from poetry in translation because of how awkward some elements of her poetry are (I think of Urdu poetry in particular, which sometimes translates into very casual language when the original is complex)? Or maybe thatās just a testament to how meaningless her line breaks are.
