Haunting Adeline: Chapter Eight
Despite the threat of violence, Addie takes Arch back to hers, citing her reason as â[feeling] much saferâ than if theyâd gone to his. She says it probably wasnât a good idea because her house is isolated and thereâs the cliff to worry about but, most of all, she has a âstalker that lingers around and likes to break in.â
Then she says itâs stupid.
Saying somethingâs stupid or a bad idea and then continuing to do the aforementioned thing doesnât absolve you of being a complete moron. The self-awareness doesnât lend you any points.
Arch compliments her house, taking in the updates sheâs done but his eyes keep going to the staircase, which she says if as if he knows her roomâs up there. No shit, Addieâbedrooms for houses more than one story tend to have the bedrooms on a different floor.
Addie leads him into the sunroom, which she claims is her favorite in the entire manor, and tells us how sheâs been hesitant to go into it, considering it âhurtsâ after she lost Nana. She decides to take this man, who she plans to have satisfying sex with, to a room where she spent a good chunk of time with her Nana inâŚwhy, exactly? She even describes the room as âstill thick with [Nanaâs] presence.â So forgive me if I find it kind of disturbing that sheâd have sex somewhere heavy with memories of her beloved dead grandmother. Thatâs freaky as hell and really weird.
Mommy Issues: the Snyder Cut: 66
Through double doors, the room is essentially âa glass boxâ and âoverlooks the cliff edge,â with the â[moonlit] water glittering.â But thatâs not all, folks! Addie says the âmost notable partâ is above themâa nighttime sky âlit up with orbs of diamondsâ that â[glitter and shine] against the black backdrop.â Personally, Iâd love to have sex under the stars but not in a room I spent a lot of time with my dead grandmother in, but hey, maybe thatâs just me.
Arch gawks at the sight with âhis mouth hanging open,â and Addie imagines itâs one of the few times heâs âlooked unattractive,â but then contradicts herself by saying heâs never been more attractive than right now. Right now, heâs ânot concerned with controlling his face and movementsâ and how heâs âjust a man in awe of the beauty.â When he looks to her, she says the âedges of his eyes [are] [rounded] with delightâ and in the next breath describes his eyes as âblue moons.â I donât think the edges of your eyes can round nor do I think likening blue moons to eyes is a good simile, either.
Regardless, his blue moon eyes rounded with delight are apparently full of âan emotion [she] canât put her finger onâ and, for someone who nicknamed herself the Manipulator, sheâs not very good at realizing he looked fucking sad. And she halfheartedly wants to know why, but says that by âhis eyes [heating] like a burner on the stove,â she knows the opportunityâs passed.
Ah, yes, the epitome of sexyâa hot eye on a stove.
Unintentionally Hilarious: 12
Arch goes sexy mode, âprowlingâ forward, and she watches him âwith bated breath,â but she canât forget where they areâŚor the idea that her âshadow [might be] lurking outsideâ with a âfull viewâ due to the glass walls. Part of her doesnât care because she just has to stick it to The Man, who, mind you, threatened to cut off Archâs hands for touching her (regardless if it was consensual) and has been breaking into her house regularly without a trace.
She goes on a very White Feminist diatribe about how the âonly person who will lay claim to [her] body is who [she] [allows]â and how how sheâll let Archâs âhands to touch [her.]â Hands, that she says, âwill trace every inch of [her] skin, followed by his mouthâ and how sheâll let âhis tongue lick [her] pussy until [sheâs] sated, right before he fucks [her] until [she] no longer know[s] [her] name.â And how sheâll let him because she said he could.
This is obviously supposed to be her being Empowered and Badass, just like shoving the rose in the whiskey glass and calling it a masterpiece, but it just makes her sound ridiculous to the nth degree. It also reads akin to the monologue previously, from the first chapter, about how she totally doesnât care what her mother thinks, blah, blah, blah.
Smells Like Misogyny: 80 (One point for each line about how Feminist and Badass she is to choose sex.)
Unintentionally Hilarious: 21
But Arch pulls her in close, and Addie gushes about the way âthe hard ridgesâ of his body feels nice, apparently. Good. Then they kiss, and she describes how kissing him feels like âwater at the bottom of the cliff, swaying against the rocks.â Water doesnât sway and especially not against rocks. Also that imagery doesnât bring to mind a man who âgently capturesâ a womanâs lips in a kiss.
She â[moans] into his mouthâ and â[pries] his lips apart,â which makes him growl and his ârestraint [slip].â He holds her tighter, fisting her hair and angling her head so he can âplunge [and explore] [her] mouth.â She pushes up against him because sheâs loving it and â[shudders] at the feel of his hard cockâ because heâs ânot small,â which sheâs salivating over. Sheâs excited at the idea of âsomething that will blind [her] with pleasure and leave [her] breathless and satisfied.â
Which we all know Zade will, even as she denies it. Heâll just be so âpassionateâ and so âbigâ that sheâll have ten million orgasms that melt her brain. Despite the fact itâs just straight up rape and assault.
Thereâs some more back and forth where she describes her moan as âbouncing in his mouthâ and how his hand â[jerks] her mouth away.â When he bites her neck, âsharp pleasure sends [her] eyes to the back of [her] head,â and he curses, muttering something about her voice, of all things. Not that he likes how vocal she is or how sheâs loud or anythingâher, uh, sexy voice, apparently.
He opens her jeans and asks if â[her] pussy [is] wetâ while he delivers a âsmartingâ nip that he soothes immediately. She says that his hand âslithersâ into her underwear and doesnât stop until the âtip of his middle finger dips inside.â Then he says that he wants to âhear [her] sing,â and Iâve never heard anyone refer to making their partner moan as singing. It also makes me of a bird. Music to their ears, yes but singing?
Unintentionally Hilarious: 22
Then his fingers âplungeâ into her without any preamble and she says her âvision blackensâ as she lets out a âyelp of pleasureâ and how itâs the âonly thing [sheâs] capable of.â He proceeds to start âdrivingâ his fingers in and out of her and she tells us âall [she] can do is hold onâ while she â[sings] for him just the way he asked.â He says she sings so pretty and uses the âheel of his palmâ on her clit, which doesnât sound all that enticing to me, but hey, each to their own. She says his âskilled fingersâ make her knees quake and he ask, âin a dark whisper,â if sheâll, uh, âsing prettyâ when she comes. She â[thinks] she [nods]â but the tensionâs too fierce for her to be sure.
He adds a finger and she â[plummets] over the edge.â He calls her a pretty bird and she kisses him and he breaks it by smearing her arousal on her mouth, purring that sheâs âleft a messâ and how itâd âbe rude not to clean it up.â Honestly? I have no issueâoutside the pretty bird and singing nonsense Iâm supposed to find sexyâwith this scene. Theyâre both working well off one another, and most importantly? Itâs consensual. How the fuck is the stalker who rapes and assaults Addie on a regular basis supposed to be less of a monster than the man sheâs having a consensual encounter with? I think this might be the only one in the book.
Just as she sucks his finger in, she gets an âicy feelingâ and describes how the waves of pleasure have âturned angryâ and are âramming [her] body into the unforgiving rock.â Despite it being dark, she â[feels] like [sheâs] in a room filled with stadium lights.â Movement outside the window, which apparently sends â[her] heart upside down and sends it crashing to the pit of [her] stomach.â
Unintentionally Hilarious: 23
Even though she canât see him, she knows Zadeâs out there, saying she âcan feel him.â Arch pulls away, and she says that his expression is conflicted between asking if sheâs okay or keep going, and asks whatâs wrong. She lies and says itâs nothing because sheâs the dumb horror movie protagonist youâre screaming at.
Now that sheâs not high on orgasm fumes, she doesnât think egging on the unhinged individual stalking her is a good idea but adds sheâs âtoo stubbornâ to put an end to this night and she â[wants] Archâ but not with any voyeurs while, in her own words, she â[takes] him.â
Yeah, no shit, girl. But considering the stalkerâs angry knocking the last time you almost got with a man, Iâd be more concerned what the stalker might do if you actually have sex. But I guess thatâs not Addie. Also take him? We didnât need that. Blergh.
Heâs incredulous because every personâs dream is oral beneath the starsâwhich arguably is infinitely more sexy and romantic than a single thing Zade doesâand when her attentionâs drawn away due to more movement in the window, he â[presses] against [her]â and she says that she has to âcrane [her] neckâ to look up at him and itâs apparently a âsight [sheâll] never forget.â
But weâre not given any description to further this sight sheâll never forget. At least Meyer had the right idea to wax poetry about Edwardâs beauty with a line like that.
Arch immediately starts dirty-talking to her, which is one thousand times more sexy than anything we see Zade do, whispering about how she âshould strip off [her] clothes and show [him] that sexy little bodyâ and when she does, he wants her to âlie down, spread [her] legs, and let him clean up the mess [she] made.â
Addie squeaks and blushes, sniping at herself internally for it. Just as she starts to whip her jeans off, âa loud bang disturbs the charged silenceâ and breaks the moment. Theyâre both unsettled, Addie by âfucking de ja vuâ and him by the unexpected company, and sheâs apparently âincredibly close to stomping like a childâ because she âwas actually enjoying [herself]â unlike with Greyson.
Bad Writing: 85 (One point for dÊjà vu being broken up like that and one for the missing accents in it.)
If you knew you werenât going to like sex with Greyson, why even agree? For some disgusting comparison to show much a sex god Zade is??
Regardless of my opinions on Addieâs sex life as it stands, Arch charges towards possible danger with Addie on his heels, âbuttoning and zipping [her] pants as [she] goesâ because her two brain cells are rubbing together and she can â[sense] the night is over.â
When he gets to the front door, he tells her to stay in the hallway and hesitates with a âweird lookâ on his face that she canât figure out. He says to call the police if things get worse and sheâs silent with fear. But she has the where-with-all to lament about how she âshouldâve told him [she] [has] a stalkerâ and how she âthought [she] saw something in the sunroomâ but everything happened so fast and now heâs âactively putting himself in danger.â
It seems to me it didnât happen too fast at all because if it had, you wouldnât have had an orgasm. Had plenty of time to squeeze that in before Arch exits stage right with the narrative acting like Zadeâs any different.
The situation, of course, turns her on as much as it frightens her and she claims she needs to âcheck herself into a mental hospitalâ but only if she survives tonight. She says her shadowâs pissed, just like with Greyson, and goes on about how he could âkill [them] both.â Especially, she adds as if we donât remember the threat, now that he got a front row seat to Arch finger banging her in the sunroom.
Addie spends all of a moment regretting this but only because Arch might get murdered because she wanted to stick it to The Man because sheâs just so feisty and rebellious! Then adds if not murdered than, at most, brutally mutilated.
Arch steps onto the porch, acting big and bad, and Addieâs âeyes[bulge]â when he pulls out a gun as she wonders âwho the hell [she] let in [her] house.â As if people donât conceal carry or have weapons at home for this very scenario? You know next to nothing about Arch yet youâre freaking the fuck out whenâin a possibly volatile, dangerous situationâhe steps onto your porch with a weapon to fend off your stalker. Why do you seem more unsettled by him being armed than the stalker thatâs broken into your house several times?
Addie flashbacks to her conversation with Daya, saying that it âlooks like [she] did find someone willing to kill for [her]â and says if the foreplayâs any indication, he âwouldâve done well in that department, too.â Sheâs pissed because her stalker is ruining tonight, so she starts praying to God, promising to stop drinking and meaning it this time because she doesnât want Arch to die. She also hopes that Archâs aim is good and I, for one, hope it is too because Iâm going to ask him for a bullet between the eyes.
When she finally goes outside, she doesnât see anyone or anything aside from his car. As she steps out onto the porch, she says that the âcrunch of somethingâ underfoot âcements [her] body into stone.â Itâs a rose, because of fucking course it is, and itâs covered in âfresh blood.â
She activates her singular brain cell and dials the police, spotting both the text she saw in the club and the other one sheâd ignored, from Zade. It says âdonât feel guilty, baby. I donât make idle threats, so consider this a lesson learned.â
The cops show up but only after a thorn-free rose image transition and she says the âflashing red and blue lightsâ make her sick and how sheâs full of dread while officers and dogs search her property. They took the rose but âthe blood has stained [her] handsâphysically and metaphorically,â she tells us.
She cries a single tear and declares she âkilled a man.â She knew there was possible danger but didnât care. We know, Addie. You even went on a whole monologue to stick it to The Man in the Window about how Arch was going to have filthy, raunchy, intense sex with you because you said so.
The sheriff approaches and she turns to the audience to, yet again, monologue about how sheâs âknown him since [she] was a childâ and all about how heâd gone to school with Sarina and how sometimes heâs invited for dinner. Then she tells us about his looksâhow heâs a âtall, built manâ at âsix-sevenâ and how his family is just at tall. And how his father was a sheriff, too and his grandfather and how itâs a family affair because the current sheriffâwho Iâll dub Sheriff Sexy just becauseâhas a couple of brother whoâre cops, too.
A Whole Lot of Nothing: 35 (Yes, ten whole points. One for each line of necessary backstory we didnât need.)
He asks some standard questions and she answers truthfully, thinking fondly about Arch giving his full name. After she tells him, heâs quiet and then admits that her stalker âmightâve done [her] a favor.â While she waits for elaboration, she notes his âthick, dark hairâ and how he mustâve been âattractiveâ younger and how his looks are basically ruined due to the âsilver invading his hairâ and the âwrinkle linesâ at his eyes and mouth.
Turns out Archâs family are âknown criminalsâ and Addie takes a moment to shit on her mother, saying she did awful raising Addie because her âlife choices are questionable at best lately.â Then she talks about she needs to talk with, uh, the âShe-Devil from aboveâ because, obviously, âsheâs been trying to kill [Addie] off.â And she wonders if she should let Her.
Mommy Issues: the Snyder Cut: 67
Allegedly, Archâs family dabbles in cocaine and Arch in particularâs been accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife, which he got out of. When Addie covers her face, she says Sheriff Sexy is âassuming [sheâs] cryingâ but she tells us sheâs âtoo angry.â Sheâs pissed at herself for taking him home and sheâs especially pissed because of his dangerous family.
Sheâs rightfully anxious they might come after her and Sheriff Sexy says itâs unlikely, considering sheâs a ârandom girlâ and how they have a âlist of enemies a mile long.â Even if they do look into her, theyâll probably lose interest and turn their focus to actual threats. So long as they donât find out about her stalker, or, more accurately, according to Sheriff Sexy, the rose. She admits to having a stalker and heâs confused because he hasnât seen any reports. She starts yelling, and I feel kind of bad for the guy because itâs giving the same vibe as a customer yelling at someone who has to fix a mistake they didnât cause.
After he gets her to chill out, she does and relays everything to him and Sheriff Sexy admits that Archâs family might blame her. I, for one, agree because she knew she had a stalker, knew heâd threatened âany man that touched her,â and still went through with everything. Iâm not saying Zadeâs rightâheâs very much notâbut Addie completely disregarded his threat and doesnât even have the common sense not to get fingered in clear view of said psycho.
Weâre treated to the first mention of Addieâs father, whoâs ask Sheriff Sexy for details âabout certain thingsâ which would piss Sarina off because they discussed grisly things in front of child-Addie. I canât argue with Sarina there because there are some topics not suitable in certain setting and I consider in front of a child one of those. Of course, we're meant to dislike Sarina for this because Addie-girl, remember, loves scary things from birth. And it's yet another dig at Sarina, who Addie can't go a chapter without shitting all over, even in situations where there's no real connection. Hello, Feyellanessa. (Feyre from ACOTAR, Bella (the progenitor of these, arguably) from Twilight, Ana from Fifty Shades of Grey, and Tessa from After.)
Sheriff Sexy promises heâll âdo everything in [his] powerâ to keep her safe and she just flat out says it âdoesnât make [her] feel any better.â
The chapter ends with her telling us that he isnât going to be able to help her, be it a âcrime family or a fucking stalker.â
Onto the goddamn letter, I suppose.
Gigiâs Letter #7 â September 10th, 1944
Gigi begins this one by wailing about how she â[hasnât] seen Ronaldo in three days.â How very fucking dramatic. Itâs three days, lady. And he isnât even your man!
Thatâs Still Cheating: 5
Apparently, she and John had a fight, where he said â[sheâs] changedâ and that sheâs âno longer the woman he fell in love withâ and that sheâs âdistant now.â He also complains that when he wants her, sheâs not interested.
She describes her marriage as feeling âwrong and dirtyâ but she doesnât feel as if sheâs cheating on John, her literal husband, but Ronaldo. She doesnât bother to give John a response and how saying I love you feels âemptyâ when it isnât directed at Ronaldo. And she can tell itâs eating John alive because she can see the âhollownessâ in his eyes. Then, the letter ends with her straight up telling us that she â[doesnât] careâ that sheâs losing her husband.
Yet again this bookâs trying to make me sympathize with a cheater, and I canât do that. Even from the beginning, when Ronaldo is simply a stranger watching her from outside her window, she doesnât want John to hurt him. And it makes no fucking sense unless you count is as some ham-fisted attempt to excuse the affair she engages in.
