This message motivational, but still feels different.
I didn't just hear his words.
I saw the pain in his eyes.
He already knew something the world didn't know yet. Sometimes the loudest battles are fought against the voices of doubt inside our own heads.
Later that year, he got divorced. From all-time highs to damn all-time lows. I've lived through those cycles more than once, so I know that kind of pain - the pain of giving everything for the growth, only to be left with nothing.
The tragedy kept him away for almost a year. Love and family were everything to him, and when they broke, a part of him broke too.
"The Revenge Fight" was against my favorite fighter, "Charles Oliveira," and he won. Yet there was something bittersweet about it. Two warriors who respected each other's cultures so deeply, forced to stand on opposite sides because that's the nature of the business.
A few days ago, he fought Justin Gaethje and tasted defeat for the first time. My metaphor isn't that he lost the fight - it's that he buried a piece of his own soul that night. No opponent could have taken it from him; only he could.
