Apple Rot
Part Seven: Workhorse
Content Warning: Blood, Violence, Character Death [Mention]
The ground is stiff as Big Mac presses the shovel into it. The seasons are turning, he muses, the thought ordinary and out of place against the horrors the night has brought to his family. Granny Smithâs rudimentary grave lies only a few feet ahead of this new spot, and he tries not to let misty eyes linger on it as he concentrates on his work.Â
Heâs a strong pony. Strong of body, strong of mind. He wonât let this break him- he canât. Not yet. Not until his baby sister is put to rest, and not until he knows whether his only remaining sibling is still alive. He can let the tears fall, silent, guilty, bitter, but he cannot stop what heâs doing, not until the job is done. Heâs a workhorse. Thatâs what heâs made for.Â
When the hole is deep enough, he lifts the tiny, bundled up filly, wrapped in a bloodstained quilt left behind by their late parents. He thanks all that is good and holy that they arenât here to see this. To see him. To see what he did. As he nudges her into the cold depression in the earth, her ribbon comes undone, red hair -just like dadâs- falling to frame her face. Apart from the blood around her mouth and the black rot creeping up her face, she looks almost peaceful. Like she could be sleeping. Big Mac settles her down and starts to toss the ribbon in after her, but he thinks better of it and ties it around his shoulder instead. HeâllâŚhave a piece of her with him, this way. An object of comfort, and a reminder of the guilt heâll have to carry for however long he might still live. He wonders if itâll be much longer.Â
Heâs just finished covering the hole and patting down the earth when Applejack runs towards him, accompanied by Fluttershy who has forgotten her ability to fly and is instead struggling to keep up on hoof.Â
âWhereâs Apple Bloom?â His sister is wide-eyed, and Big Mac thinks she already knows the answer. Her gaze flicks to the earth, to the ribbon he wears, and she asks again. âBig Mac, whereâs Apple Bloom?â
He doesnât speak right away- heâs usually pretty quiet, so at least that gives him some time. If he tells her the truth, if he tells her how Apple Bloom begged for mercy in between trying to tear him to shredsâŚ
He gave her mercy, in the only way he knew how. He knows that if he explains this, Applejack will hate him, call him extreme, call him a murderer- and he was. But he also knew that whatever Granny Smith and Apple Bloom had was evil. It was rotten. It couldnât be cured, couldnât be slowed, and if they werenât careful, it would rot them all. He was a workhorse, and he put himself to work.Â
When he looks to Applejack again, her eyes are so wide and so scared. He needs to be a good brother to her, now more than ever. He needs to give her the answer she needs, and the answer she needs is a lie.
âGranny nâ Apple BloomâŚthey got real sick after you left. Passed away in their beds, I- I brought âem out here. Put âem to rest in the orchard. I- Iâm sorry, Applejack. But they wereâŚthemselves, when it happened.â
Heâs glad in this moment that his coat is already red. It hides the blood he would not have been able to explain away.Â
Applejack stares numbly at him, before falling to the ground in screaming sobs. She curses him, and he takes it. He only interrupts her when he starts hearing groans from the far orchard.
âApplejack. You gotta go.âÂ
She looks up at him, voice hoarse as she balks. âLike hell Iâm goinâ anywhere! Not without Granny, and Apple Bloom-â
âYou gotta go.â Big Mac repeats himself, and draws himself up to his full height as he nods towards the orchard, shambling figures beginning to break through the treeline.
âThis is our fault, AJ. The cider- it made Granny and Apple Bloom sick, probably made everypony sick. You gotta get to Twilightâs and tell her. She can- she can fix it. She has to.âÂ
Fluttershy is tugging on Applejackâs leg, trying to get her to move, to listen to her brother.Â
Applejack is finally coherent enough to listen, and she quickly wipes her eyes as she pulls herself together, even just momentarily. Thatâs his sister- sheâs a workhorse, too. Always knows when thereâs a job to do.
âWhatâre you gonna do?â She asks him, and he keeps his green eyes locked on the shambling figures, which are beginning to break out into a clumsy gallop.Â
âIâm gonna stay on our farm. And Iâm gonna buy you time.âÂ
When Applejack and Fluttershy hesitate again, Big Mac yells at them to leave, just as he told Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo not even a few hours before. He isnât satisfied until theyâre just dark shapes in the moonlight, and only then does he turn back to face the sick ponies barreling toward him.
For the final time, Big Mac picks up the shovel. Â
