A very old post of mine from 3.0 with screenshots of Garlean titles from the Great Gubal Library has gained quite a lot of notes recently. The information in that post has now been outdated for some time, and also contained some errors. Itâs a bit annoying that the way Tumblr works means I canât really edit the original post in a meaningful way so I thought Iâd make a new and more comprehensive one instead, with the relevant page from the lore book. Â
If you want a more simple reference, the FF Wikiâs page on Garlemald has a written list, but I wanted to post this as it contains some additional information not listed on the wiki.

Part III: Gridaniaâs Law Enforcement and Military
This wraps up my post series on the three Grand Companies, though I am still contemplating a similar post on Ishgardian law and military. Weâll see!
Gridaniaâs Ruling Body, Elemental Law, and Crime
Encyclopedia Eorzea - Government:Â âThe rule of Gridania falls to the Seedseer Council, a body composed of chosen officials known as Hearers. These conjurers are able to commune with the elementals, and decide the course of the city-state through discussion and consensus. Around the time of the Calamity, however, Gridaniaâs fate was so uncertain that Kan-E-Senna - the Elder Seedseer and head of the Council - assumed direct control. At present, she continues to preside over all affairs of state.â
Encyclopedia Eorzea - The Seedseer Council: âThe Seedseer Council is a forum for Hearers to share what they have learned from the elementals, and decide matters of state. In effect, the Council is the highest power in the land, and the arbiter of Gridanian law. One must wonder, therefore, why they conduct their business at the Lotus Stand, an outside area with no roof. Scholars contend that this is for the benefit of the elementals, so they may watch the proceedings. While decisions are put to a vote, policies sometimes reflect the will of the elementals more strongly than the opinions of Hearers. Following the Calamity, however, this system has changed. Faced with the challenges of the Garlean Empire and rebuilding, Gridania could scarcely afford time spent in debate. Thus, the Council has vested its full power in Kan-E-Senna until such a time as the danger has passed.âÂ
Encyclopedia Eorzea - Beliefs:Â âGridanians know the blessings bestowed upon them by the elementals, and heed well their will. Behind this lies a fear of disturbing the peace of the Twelveswood, and being cast from the forest by enraged elementals - just as the Ixal once were. Yes, Gridanians have earned a reputation as stubborn amongst the other city-states of Eorzea, as they can be so unyielding in their commitment to the forest laws as to appear unadaptable and brittle.â
Raya-O-Senna: âWhen in the Twelveswood, one must ever be mindful of the elementals. They suffer none who disregard their laws. I shall personally deal with those who defile the sanctity of the forest. That is, if the elementals havenât already seen to them. Theirs is a swift and brutal justice.â
Balan: âRefugees must first spend a night here in Quarrymill that the elementals might judge them worthy of living in the Twelveswood. Their decision cannot be appealed. Every one of us, Gridanians included, dwell here only by the elementalsâ leave.â
Lionnet: âLest you wonder, our outskirts are tightly patrolled to counter the Ixali threat. I may add that those same patrols will not hesitate to deal with any who threaten the peace of our citizens. Do not imagine yourself above our laws.â
Bryde:Â âIf you wish to reside in the Twelveswood, you must exhibit the proper respect for nature. The Ixali beastmen hunt forest creatures for sport and topple trees for their misguided rituals. Will the elementals punish these savage intruders, you ask? It is not a question of âif,â adventurer, but âwhen.ââ
Oâdhinek: âThe beast tribes are as different from us as night from dayâplain and simple. Thereâs no sense trying to understand them, much less live side by side. And a swift exile from Gridania awaits any who hold otherwise. Aye, we had a healer years ago who found that out to his cost. Seemed a good enough sort⌠until the day he tended to the wounds of an injured bloody Ixal, citing âthe healersâ oathâ or some such nonsense. What could possibly bring a man to take pity on that filth?â
Averay the Ardent: âMove alongâ I have my hands full with this merchant. We have strict rules requiring all foreign goods to be inspected by a mage before crossing our borders. Alas, some outsiders remain ignorantâŚâ
Foforyo: âJust you remember this - the reward for impudence is exile, and thatâs if youâre lucky. Others are claimed by the wood, turned into wildlings - a far grimmer fate.â
Brother Telent: âDidnât kill too many, I hope. Foul beasts they may be, but they are of the wood. Itâs not our place to kill as we see fit, as Eorzeans elsewhere do. Doing so only angers the elementals, and brings the greenwrath on us all.â
Maisenta:Â âLet me guess: you had your misgivings, but couldnât let your conscience get in the way when there were fortunes to be had. So you cast your lot with Baert, covered your eyes and ears and hoped for the best. Ignorance of your complicity is no excuse, Rishushu. I hear that the Wood Wailers and Godsâ Quiver are taking particularly severe measures regarding the sale of stolen and poached goods in light of recent events. A word or two from me and youâll spend the night in the comfort of your very own gaol cell.â
Castellaint: âWhat brings you to Quarrymill, adventurer? Mayhap you heard that our pact with the elementals permits hunting in this area? Do not think that gives you leave to strip the forest bare. Such freedom is only granted to those who temper their actions with restraint. Any who would do harm to the Twelveswood⌠well, Iâm sure you have heard tales of the consequences.â
Open Season: âThough poaching is one of the most severe crimes in the Twelveswood, often punishable by death, there is no end to the constant flow of those who come to the sacred forest in search of exotic pelts and horns to sell to dubious traders from the Far East.â
Wlfric:Â âThe poacher escaped!? Inexcusable! I should have known better than to entrust such a task to an adventurer. Those who defy the elementalsâ will must be served justice, or we all shall pay the price. Youâd do well not to forget this.â
Wind-up Succubus: âOne of countless clockwork servitors discovered in the home of a Gridanian goldsmith recently hanged for the crime of ritual summoning. It is believed while crafting the automatons, he became increasingly obsessed with the void, until the darkness bid him do the unthinkable.â
Syro Fulke:Â âWhat news of the thaumaturge? Hm? What you brought? A sealed letter? Indeed, everything seems in order. This document carries the proper seals, in accordance with Gridanian law. Should Ailith break her oath and sin against he wood again, we will be within our rights to deal with her as we see fit.â
Judgeray:Â âIn the distant past, the Gridanians used to try individuals suspected of heinous crimes by forcing them to share a pond with this extremely venomous stingray.â
Buscarron: âAye, Laurentius confessed to his crimes. I just had word from the Twin Adder. Seems he marched straight into the Nest and gave himself up.â
Haurtefert: âSad to say, even a place as peaceful as Gridania is not without its crime. Still, I cannot help but feel for those imprisoned here. The gaols of Gridania are a far worse fate than those of the other nations.â
Foulques:Â âIt is only a matter of time before they betray you. Aye, just like those wretches who saw me imprisoned and exiled. I was once an upright citizen of Gridania, and a man of the Lancersâ Guild. Yet life was not easy. For want of the coin to obtain the barest necessities, I conspired with my closest comrades to steal from the guildâs coffers.
The theft soon came to light, and though there were no suspects, it was clear that the deed had been perpetrated by someone within the ranks. An air of suspicion hung heavy over the guild from that day forth, until at last, unable to bear the guilt, I convinced my accomplices to join me in confessing⌠Only for them to bite their craven tongues after I had stepped forward and admitted my part in the crime. And so it was that I alone took the blame!
âOf course it was the Duskwight,â everyone said. âWas there ever any doubt?â It all made perfect sense! Despite my heartfelt pleas, my so-called friends denied any involvement. Instead they called me vulgar names I do not care to repeat.â
Buscarron:Â âTo be fair, the Duskwights can be an unruly lot, but they ainât so bad once you get to know them. And it donât seem right to bar a whole race of people from the Druthers for the misdeeds of a few. There should be at least one place where anyone willing to pay the coin and drink in peace is welcome, donât you think?â
Wood Wailer: âKeepers of the Moon, eh? If it were up to me, Iâd hang every one of you, let the Twelve sort out the âClaws from the rest. Now, stand with your feet apartâŚâ
Sharp-eyed Keeper: âDie wailing, little lancer. We recognize no lawsâneither of men nor of elementals. What we want, we take. That is freedom. That is our way.â
Elemental Housekeeping: âOf overgrown traces of Gelmorra, few remain to disturb the order of the forest, yet occasional ruins are still found that must needs be removed. What is under the forest may stay, but our laws decree that no stone of Gelmorra mar the home of the elementals.â
Raya-O-Senna: âIt is our duty to facilitate harmony between man and elemental. All the laws of the forest count for naught if we fail in this.â
Sanche: âMy name is Sanche. It was twelve years ago that I fled Gridania with my infant child. She was born a Padjal, and you know what that means⌠ The conjurers would have snatched her from my arms, and taught her to be a servant of the forest spirits. By Gridanian law, they were well within their rights to do so.â
Raya-O-Senna:Â âAnd yet, for all his stubbornness, there is some truth to my brotherâs words. Ancient laws forbid us from sharing the teachings of white magic outside of our own kind. There are reasons for this, which I would share with you when the time is right.â

The entire PAX West lore panel, including explanations of area names - i.e. why some names seem redundant, localization tidbits (i.e. Warring Triad names), full lyrics for Beautyâs Wicked Wiles, the Ala Mhigan anthem, and the Garlean territory anthem. Favorite takeaways: Who was really responsible for the Hamilton references. Using romanized Japanese to represent speaking Hingan. Gelmorran civilizationâs end. âWhy are Lalafells so delicious!?â
Iâve been working on and off to transcribe the entire PAX West lore panel and add relevant lore bits back to previous posts of mine. So while thatâs still a work in progress, Iâll add the bits Iâve finished already in the Read More below:

Can Sounsyy do a lore post on the various drugs of XIV?
Drugs in Eorzea
Illicit Drugs
Somnus  (most similar to Opium?)
Chuchuto: âSomnus⌠Thatâs the mind warping-substance made from dream flowers. Those who overindulge are said to fall into an eternal slumber.â
Ahldskyf: âAs you suspected, these are the highly illegal blooms known as dream flowers. They are the prime ingredient in the creation of âsomnusââa substance whose fragrance is said to lull the snifferâs mind into the sleep of death.â
Hungry Hobbledehoy: âPlease, ma'am. My baby brother is hungry, but my mother is too weak to feed him. My father left before I reached my third nameday, and my grandfather died last week in Copperbell Mines. My sister moved away to a rich merchantâs house and no longer visits us, and my older brother lies all day in the corner with his somnus pipe⌠If you could spare some food⌠Even the leaves of a cactuar would sufficeâŚâ
Pluto
Weggfarr Wideaxe:Â â'Case yer wonderinâ, that was pluto! Just a draft of it, anâ yer body turns hard as iron! Not even blades can pierce it!â
Karasu:Â âThey boast the strength of a crew twice their size, mostly because of the pluto they take. With their muscles bolstered by the substanceâand a healthy dose of natural viciousnessâthey have brought themselves fortune and infamy on the eastern seas.â
Milkroot  (most similar to LSD or Ayahuasca?)
Milkroot:Â âThe thick white sap extracted from this ochu root has the power to grant its user wondrously terrible visions.â
Got Milkroot:Â âMilkroot is a curse upon the people of the Twelveswood, destroying lives and tearing apart families. The sylphs who grow the deadly drug must be dealt with, but until they can be found, we must concentrate our efforts on ridding the forest of the saplings.â
Dreamtoad Ooze:Â âA slippery substance secreted by a dreamtoad. Known to enhance the hallucinatory effects of milkroot.â
Dreamweed
Dreamweed:Â âA prohibited substance. Merely knowing of its existence is hazardous to oneâs health.â
Blackroot Rose
The Root of the Problem:Â âA pack of normally placid antelopes has grown frenzied and begun attacking botanists participating in the Greatloam Groweryâs reforestation project. After inspecting the carcass of one of the beastkin, it is believed the animals must have eaten the leaves of the blackroot rose, known to cause horrible visions and induce extreme fits of violence. In their current state, the animals are a threat to the botanists, the forest, and themselves, and so to prevent any further incidents, it has been decided that the antelops must be put down. Our guild is searching for adventurers willing to carry out the grim task.â
Falsely-advertised Tonics
Las Vegas Fanfest 2014: âIn Limsa Lominsa, the original Arcanist quest that was supposed to be released in 1.0 was actually about this disease spreading around La Noscea called the Green Rot. It would infect all of these people and they would die. To make money off of this, a bunch of merchants would try to smuggle in snake oils and tonics and things like that, and try to sell those to the people dying so they could get their money because they knew they were going to die anyway and were desperate.
You, as the Assessors (because at Mealvaanâs Gate the arcanists are Assessors) would check the stuff coming in. One of the jobs would have you check ships and confiscate all of this contraband. That was going to be the original arcanist story, but that got completely scrapped and turned into the current version.â
Guntram:Â âPhew, youâve saved my hide, friend. Just stopped to give my cargo a check on the way to Ul'dah and saw that all my bottles of Radz-at-Han skin tonic were as empty as a Garlean promise. Looks as though the lids shook off in transit and the whole load spilled right out. But I refuse to have it said that Guntram failed to make good on a delivery. Cactuar blood is supposed to help keep the skin supple. Iâll just use what youâve brought to fill the empty bottles, and all those lovely Ul'dahn ladies will be none the wiser. Oh, donât worry about getting found out. Radz-at-Han skin tonic is still a rare find, all the more so this far south. Iâd venture none in Ul'dah would even know it from an ampoule of their own piss.â
Cactuar Blood: âActually, this clear liquid is far closer to water than it is blood⌠except, that is, for the cactuar it is taken from. For him it is most definitely blood.â
Babaki: âI tell you this - thereâs more coin to be had in placebos than in all the alchemical agents in this damned place!â
Medicinal Drugs
Frondaleâs Phrontistery
Nogeloix: âGood evening to you, sir, and welcome to Frondaleâs Phrontistery. You will find the finest alchemists and healers in Eorzea within these halls. Our treatments are second to none. While I have your attention, I would like to warn you that remedies of dubious utility are rampant on the streets of Ul'dah of late, peddled by swindlers who seek to profit from the spreading fear over the lesser moon.â
Kukusi: âDonât tell me the noises at night are keeping you up as well. Weâve more sleep-deprived patients than I know what to do with, and our store of sleeping droughts is far from limitless. To make matters worse, Ul'dahâs merchants have been buying up every known remedy for sleeplessness. Thereâs scarce a cup of warm milk to be had anymore, let alone the most potent of reagents. No doubt they smelled a profit.
Luckily, however, the thing I currently desire is not at all hard to find - providing you know where to look! Now, creatures known as nutgrabber marmots nest to the north and east of Camp Black Brush, and these unassuming beasts spend their waking hours foraging for slumber nuts - those being the items I lack. The clamor and bright lights of Ul'dah can be ungodsly at times. I could understand if one newly come to the city could not sleep for a time, but this⌠It is beyond strange. With your help, we shall restore the bliss of slumber and the beauty of dreams to those poor souls they have forsaken!â
Obili Tambili: âReceive what potions and salves you can, but do not seek a bed here. I know not what ails you, but the costs of a room will do you far more harm.â
Miyaya: âTo be seen and tended to is cheap enough, I grant you. Itâs the medicines what run you a pretty gil. The stuff comes in all manner of potencies and doses, but donât let that confuse you - itâs always the costliest what works the wonders.â
Curing Greyscale:Â âAfter moons of research, Frondaleâs Phrontistery leeches have discovered that the shell of a certain species freshwater crayfish contains a substance that, when mixed with wine and the root of the mandrake, cures greyscale. The Phrontistery wishes to begin mass production of the tincture immediately, and requires large quantities of bigclaw crayfish from the cenotes near Camp Black Brush.â
Curing Gout:Â âAfter moons of research, Frondaleâs Phrontistery leeches have discovered that a certain species of freshwater moss contains a substance that, when mixed with clover honey and ahriman eyes, cures gout. The Phrontistery wishes to begin mass production of the tincture immediately, and requires large quantities of jade marimo from the cenotes near Camp Halatali.â
Curing the Flux: âAfter moons of research, Frondaleâs Phrontistery leeches have discovered that the scales of a certain species of freshwater pipira contains a substance that, when mixed with alum and leaf of lavender, cures the crimson flux. The Phrontistery wishes to begin mass production of the tincture immediately, and requires large quantities of bitterbite pipira from the cenotes near Camp Drystone.â
Donât Forget to Take Your Meds:Â âFinal examinations are coming up at Frondaleâs Phrontistery. One can hardly sleep for all the shrieking, and the streets below the dormitories fill with a miasma of fretful sighs heavy with onions and wakefulness. At this juncture, the potion of intelligence would be a public service.â
Richesâ Brew: âI need hardly tell you that alchemy remains a major industry for Ul'dah; potions are now one of our top exports. The exact economics may be beyond your capacity to understandâI intend no offenseâbut suffice to say that the dragon wars in Ishgard have been very⌠good to us.â
Eye Drops
Blue in the Eye:Â âA terrible outbreak of ceruleum eye â a sickness in which the infected eye clouds a deep blue, causing temporary blindness, paralysis, nausea, and a slew of other symptoms â in a nearby village has depleted Camp Horizonâs stocks of medicine, and Quartermaster Aistrach has placed an order with the Jolly Raptor for a new crate of medicine. The Jolly Raptor will handsomely reward skilled alchemists to create the requested items and deliver them to Aistrach in Horizonâs Edge.â
Gridanian Healers
Tickling Whiskers: âOrobon whiskers used by local healers in the concoction of powerful potations and unguents have had to be imported from the distant island of Vylbrand. Recently, though, rumors of the strange wavekin sloshing about the forest have begun surfacing in inns and pubs throughout Gridania. If the rumors are true, then this could be a prime opportunity to collect orobon whiskers locally. Black Rabbit Traders is hiring adventurers to travel to one of the locations mentioned in the rumorsâNine Iviesâand collect as many of the alchemical ingredients as possible.â
No Leaves Left Behind:Â âFor generations, hamlet healers have applied the sticky leaves of various landtrap creatures to burns and cuts to help quicken their mending. Unfortunately, ever more frequent confrontations with neighboring beast tribes have seen demand for the leaves overtake supply. To see that those injured are not left to suffer, good coin will be paid for freshly harvested specimens.â
Motherâs Mercy
Coat the Harm (L):Â âA dragon claw or chocoboâs talon to a soft stomach will speed a man towards his congregation with Halone unless a remedy known as Motherâs Mercy is ingested in time. The medicine swiftly coats the inside of the stomach with a thick mucus, allowing the blood to clot and the wound to close. Due to the value in curing such grave wounds, Motherâs Mercy is a staple of every chirurgeonâs field kit. A knowledgeable botanist should be able to procure large quantities of gentian, the main ingredient which allows for clottingâthough they will need to brave the Chocobo Forest to do so, as the plant no longer grows in Coerthas.â
(Perfect) Gentian
Ladies and Gentians: âThe infirmaries that treat the Temple Knights are afforded facilities and tools of utmost modernity and our services profit much from the High Housesâ grace, though we find it is not coin that we lack. Alas, for too many years had we taken the gentian plant of Coerthas for granted, as the everwinter choked out most of the vegetation, so did the regionâs gentian plants perish. A simple ingredient for medicines to cure stomach pain was once in the back of our minds has now become a constant worry in terms of supply, and can only be found in the Chocobo Forest these days. Might you fly out to the region and harvest some stock to replenish our cabinets?â
More lore on Long Term Injuries and Magical/Non-magical Healing Practices here.
Miscellaneous Substances
Fogweed
Vath Searcher: âTailfeather hunters ask us for herbs, but not for eating or salve-making. Fleshlings want to make smoke for recreation. They say inhaling smoke has a pleasing effect, but we do not understand. Smoke is for driving away dragons or vermin. This use of smoke seems very strange. Yes, much too strange. Now, what did the fleshlings say to do? First, dry them with fire shards, like so. Then chop into fine pieces, and⌠There, it is done.â
Dried Fogweed:Â âFogweed, cured with fire shards and finely chopped. Residents of Tailfeather claim the fragrant aroma helps calm their nerves while on the hunt.â
Loupard:Â âBack when the Sharlayans were still here, they cultivated the stuff in their conservatories. After they packed up and left, though, the plants made their way into the wilds and, well, here we are.â
Dried Cloudcrawler  (off-gasses euphoric aroma that affects Gaelicats)
Dried Cloudcrawler:Â âCloudcrawler is a swift-growing vine that clings to the bottoms of islets found in the Sea of Clouds. When dried, the vines are pliable enough to weave into baskets or even crude armor.â
Peculiar Herb
Peculiar Herb:Â âA common weed rumored to have relaxing properties when either ingested or smoked.â
Shriekshroom Cap
Spores for the Ceremony:Â âThe Stillglade Fane is busy making preparations for this moonâs Woodgreet Mass, and requires the spores of several funguar to use in the Leafreading Ceremony, in which several of the brothers and sisters ingest the spores, which are said to give them the temporary power to âseeâ the messages left by the spirits in the leaves.â
âChanterellesâ
A Real Fungi:Â âThe land around the Red Rooster Stead is full of wild mushrooms. None of them are exactly poison, but they put folk out of the way for a few bells, if you get my meaning. Now, weâve got someone coming from the bankâyouâll not hear the reason why from meâand we need a dish of mushies so toothsome heâll eat it all.â
Potions of Strength  (Steroids)
Just Give Him a Serum:Â âLike all of Master Gegerujuâs purchases, the men that guard Costa del Sol are the finest of their kind. It is perhaps no surprise that such men have certainâeccentricities. Take this formulation, make your delivery, and thank the gods that they are on our side.â
Devil Take the Foremost:Â âAh, the Coliseum management. They have taken the recent odium over alchemical enhancements to their black hearts and propose to let combatants alter their chemistry unhindered. Red Landtrap Vine Sap
A Roseling by Any Other Name:Â âKnown for its aphrodisiacal properties, sap from the vines of the rarely seen Ocean Roseling has become increasingly popular on the pleasure boats anchored in the bay off the Captains Ward. The Brugaire Consortium will handsomely reward anyone willing to travel to Bloodshore and procure several specimens.â
Sabotender Flower Petals
Flower Power:Â âA recent rumor claims that when dried, soaked in honey, and then applied to the forehead, sabotender flower petals can cure headaches caused by overdrinking. Do the rumors contain any merit? None employed at the Seventy-seven Caravans fancies herself a leech or barber, and therefore cannot attest to any of the claims made regarding the flowersâ curative properties (or lack thereof). We simply seek to provide a supply to meet the demand, and are offering good coin for sabotenders pacified and delivered to us alive, so that we might grow our profits.â
On top of all of these listed, you can also research the medicinal properties of many real world plants which also appear in Eorzea or have Eorzean equivalents. You can theoretically create an unlimited number of conventional medicines, salves, etc. For a comprehensive look at Eorzeaâs canon flora, I highly recommend @tinolqa âs Botanica Eorzea!
Hope this helps!
@kersch-schwarzer
All of this but no mention of Moko?
I saw this reply and wanted to do a quick update/clarification. While moko grass (or its cousin, red moko grass) is notable for being the main ingredient in Eorzean hempen products, it is not stated to have any âalternativeâ uses anywhere in game, dialogue, or (leve)quest text in 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0 that I could find.
Moko Grass: âA common grass found growing throughout Aldenard. From its stalks, hempen yarn is created.â
So either Eorzeans havenât yet discovered mokoâs psychoactive properties (which seems highly doubtful considering the extent of the above list) or moko is not actually directly comparable to the real worldâs Cannabis sativa.

(Almost) Everything You Wanted To Know About Hingashi, Ver 1.0
My personal note compilation on Hingashi. To be updated as more substantial information is released.
Screenshots will be provided when possible, but all information posted here is sourced directly from the game.
â
Geography
Hingashi is separated into two islands.
The main island is called Koshu, and is famed for its fine goods such as sake and silks.
The smaller island, and the island Kugane is based out of, is called Shishu.
Hingashiâs tallest mountain is called âDaitenzanâ.
The demonym for people from Hingashi is âHingansâ.
â
Government and Law
Hingashi is governed by a âbakufuâ; literally meaning âtent governmentâ, a âbakufuâ refers to a primarily military government. In the real-world, it is best equated to the word âshogunateâ. It is unknown of Hingashi possesses an analogue to a Shogun as a military dictatorship, or if its highest office of government takes some other form.
The capital of Hingashi is Bukyo, which literally means âmilitary capitalâ.
There are numerous bureaucratic offices in the bakufu.
The Tairo refers to a high-ranking position in the bakufu, typically one who leads the governmental council. The closest analogue is the office of âprime ministerâ.
Kugane is ruled by a lord bugyo. A âbugyoâ is a local magistrate or governor, often of a city or head of a government department. âBugyoâ can also refer to âcommissionerâ (such as in ânaval commissionerâ).
The police force of Kugane is the Sekiseigumi (I donât have the characters for this so this may not be accurate, but it might translate roughly to âStone Groupâ or, more literally, âGroup Made Of Stoneâ). The head of the Sekiseigumi is addressed by the rank of âCaptainâ. Lesser officers are âLieutenantsâ.
Sekiseigumi have a reputation for dealing with foreign law-breakers ruthlessly; either via heavy arrests or even immediate execution.
Hingashi is host to numerous great lords held together by allegiance to the bakufu. It is unkown if these lords are directly referred to as âdaimyoâ or simply âlordsâ.
Hingans guilty of grievous crimesâsuch as murder or seditionâmay be ordered to commit âseppukuâ, or ritual suicide by disembowelment, to atone for their crimes.
â
Culture and Language
Hingan social structure is largely caste-based, separated between commoners, samurai, and aristocrats.
Social mobility is highly uncommon, and social status tends to be inherited rather than earned.
Modern Hingans do not speak Japanese. As with Doman, modern Hingan language should be equated to a dialect of common Hyur language; the grammar and vocabulary is mostly English, with various words substituted for words based off of Ancient Hingan.
However, Ancient Hingan does take the form of real-world Japanese.Â
For strictly lore-abiding characters, I recommend that you limit any Japanese inserts in your character dialogue to words known to exist in modern Hingan: such as âijinâ, âbakufuâ, etc. When in doubt, just use the English word.
Katanas are status symbols that are only permitted to be worn by samurai.
Theatre is popular in Kugane, such as plays and dancing.
The kami are revered by Hingans. Native Hingans may embark on a hallowed pilgrimage to visit the temples of the land to pay homage to the kami.
â
Miscellaneous
Hingan cuisine is equivalent to traditional Japanese food: tempura, tea, miso, sake, sushi, etc.
Haiku is a popular form of poetry.
Hingashi possesses skilled female entertainers known as âgeikoâ.
Hingashi steel is referred to as âtamahaganeâ, and is symbolically significant.
The Shiokaze Hostelry specializes in a fine rice wine called âjunmaishuâ, imported from Koshu.
Hingashi is home to some horses, and horseback archery is a celebrated tradition with horseback archery of particular interest.
Many aspects of Hingan culture are sourced from Yanxia, such as tea.

[Othard: a lore note]
There seems to be a lot of misinformation about Othard, geographically, among RPers right now, so a little PSA:Â Othard has a lot of different areas, and most pointedly, Kugane and Doma are different places!
A wonderful lore person (Sounsyy) put together a translated map at some point on the RPC, and I think more people need to see it.  The full version can be seen here, but Iâm going to ENHANCE and zoom in on the Othard part:
Youâll notice a few things here, or if you didnât, let me colorfy to illustrate!
There in the right-hand box in red is a big olâ island. Itâs labeled Koshu, which might be the region name (and therefore technically not Othard at all!), but we also know that at least part of this same area is called Hingashi, which is the name weâve seen used in promotional material. Think of it as the same way that Aldenard is also called Eorzea.
Anyway! Hingashi is an island chain is to the east of Othardâs mainland to the left, separated by the Ruby Sea. Hingashi is an isolationist area, and its only port open to outsiders is Kugane.  Kugane is NOT in Doma. The new housing area is actually there in Hingashi, presumably tied to Kugane the way the other housing areas are adjacent to their city-states.
Thereâs apparently another major city on the other side of Hingashi called Bukyo. I donât know anything about it, sorry! But itâs on the map.
Now, moving on to the blue area in the middle, which isâŚ
This here, this is the Othard mainland, and where youâll find the city-state of Doma, or whateverâs left of it since the Garleans put down the most recent uprising. Itâs in a region called Yanxia.Â
And, if you were wondering where the Xaela are atâŚ
Thatâs them, in the green region. Interestingly, thereâs two areas, one called the Azim Steppe and the other the Nhaama.  We donât yet know what the significance is of having the regions named for the two gods of the Auri, and why theyâre separated by a river, or if SE just thought itâd be cute or whatever.
ALSO:
Thereâs more of Othard, or even just the eastern half of this gigantic landmass, than is revealed on this map.  We know that the city-states of Rabinastre and Dalmasca, also Garlean-controlled, are SOMEWHERE out here in the unrevealed cloudy areas, though it doesnât appear weâre going there this expansion.Â
Itâs also worth noting this map does reveal a lot of other places that we just donât have lore on yet, but we will soon.Â
I hope this post helped you if you are trying to work on backstories of characters that hail from this area of the world, and didnât just confuse you instead.   ¯\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
Disclaimer: I am not a lore expert or nothin, and I donât know anything that hasnât been pretty widely distributed. Sounsyy did the good work on making this map or else I wouldnât have known where to begin on this post.

Pray to the Twelve these alchemical potations will not further addle those long befuddled by dreams of glory.â
Ironhide Unguent
Ironhide Unguent:Â âThis foul-smelling salve increases physical defense.â
Potions of Vitality* Â (Nitrate or Viagra/Sildenafil)
*In case you were wondering why tanks get big epeens?
A Matter of Vital Importance:Â âAh, another cockeyed order for your purseâs pleasure: potion of vitality to âawake the inner beastman.â Charming. You know, Iâve oft wondered if most men wouldnât be better served by a potion of unmanning. My own life may be called an abject lesson in the perils of licentiousness.â

Yuhelmeric is an NPC you ran into in 1.0, as part of the level 30 Conjurer questline. Uploaded to youtube by tonberrykei:
A Timeline of the Garlean Invasion & Its Effects
[circa 1510]
- At the turn of the 16th century, an engineer attempts to create a smaller version of the stationary steam engine, but chose instead to utilize ceruleum as a fuel source. His creation is weak but portable, and soon has the backing of Garlemaldâs military funding. The first magitek engine is born.
[1513] (64 y/a)Â
- Solus zos Galvusâs becomes a Republican Legatus and begins making reforms to use magitek in the military, pushing for increased spending in military applications of magitek technology.
[1515] (62 y/a)Â
- The Republic of Garlemald begins invading and subjugating its neighbors in Ilsabard.
[1517] (60 y/a)
- Solus zos Galvus is named Dictator of Garlemald. The first Republican magitek airships launch. The small nation of Dalmasca in Ilsabardâs central mountains falls, securing Garlemaldâs control over the majority of the northern territories.
[1522] (55 y/a)Â
- The northlands of Ilsabard are united under Garlean rule. The Republic becomes an Empire, and Solus zos Galvus becomes the First Emperor. Several influential Garlean Houses, such as House Darnus, are elevated to positions of power in the Senate or military. A new calendar is adopted by the Garlean territories, the years counted according to the Emperorâs reign.
[1528] (49 y/a)Â
- The Garlean Empire begins its invasion into Othard, attacking Rabanastre and Bozja.
[circa 1530]Â
- The Othardian nations summon an unknown primal to stall the Garlean advance.
[1550] (27 y/a)
- Ancient Allagan relics are unearthed in newly annexed Imperial territories. While Garlemaldâs engineers were never able to replicate the fundamentals of the Allagan devices, the secrets gleaned from the ancient machina progressed Garlemaldâs technology by leaps and bounds.
- Garlean engineers are successful in using ceruleum engines to reanimate a number of these uncovered Allagan machina. Some of these ancient war-machina begin appearing on the front lines.
[1552] (25 y/a)Â
- The Garleans seize Doma, crushing the last resisting nation in the Far East.
[1553] (24 y/a)Â
- With the remaining lands of Othard quickly being annexed, Garlemald turns its full attention towards Aldenard and begins attacking the Eorzean city-state of Ala Mhigo, drawing attention away from Baelsarâs ongoing political subterfuge in the region.
[1555] (22 y/a)Â
- Cid Garlond and Nero Scaeva enter Garlemaldâs Magitek Academy, their fiercely competitive rivalry fueling the Imperial military with countless new inventions, many of which would come to be used against Ala Mhigo.
[1557] (20 y/a)Â
- Ala Mhigo finally falls after Garlean infiltrators incite civil war in the city-state. The small resistance put up by Ala Mhigoâs defenders is put down in the most brutal fashion.
- Sharlayan attempts to negotiate a peace treaty with the Garlean Empire. The Garleans refused to meet the Sharlayan envoy. Negotiations failed, the Forum votes to abandon Sharlayanâs colony in the Dravanian Hinterlands. Preparations are made so that their knowledge does not fall into the hands of the Garlean Empire.
[1561] (16 y/a)
- The Eorzean Alliance is formed by the nations of Limsa Lominsa, Ulâdah, Gridania, and Ishgard - Ishgard boasting the largest military presence of the four. To bolster their numbers, the city-states begin drafting soldiers, mercenaries, and sellswords en masse.
[1562] (15 y/a)Â
- After amassing their forces in Ala Mhigo, Garlemald pushes south into Eorzea, seeking to lay claim to Silvertear Lake in Mor Dhona, but are thwarted by Midgardsormr and the Dravanians he calls to war. This singular event, later known as the Battle of Silvertear Skies, is the catalyst for almost every major world event to follow.
- In the massive explosion of aether from Silvertear, the first Eorzean primals are summoned from the fears of the Beast tribes. From then on, the tribes learn to summon these primals repeatedly against their enemies. The Echo begins manifesting in countless individuals after reportedly seeing a âstarshowerâ in the sky.
- The XIVth Legion, utterly crushed by the Dravanians, retreats to Ala Mhigo and begins construction on Baelsarâs Wall to keep the beast tribes and their âeikonsâ at bay.
- Seeking a method to defeat Eorzeaâs primals, the Emperor gives the okay for Midas nan Garlondâs and Nael van Darnusâs âMeteor Project,â seeking to use the power of Dalamud as a weapon against Eorzea. Their first test site is Bozja, the largest commercial hub in Othard.
- Dalamud awakens and a beam of energy evaporates the entire city of Bozja, desolating the entire region. Garlemald attempts to coverup this âBozja Incidentâ but it is impossible. Fear spreads throughout Othard. Nael van Darnus takes her failure out on the Othardians, worsening conditions there. The first whispers of Far Eastern resistance begin.
- Having witnessed the destruction his magitek inventions visited upon Ala Mhigo and the obliteration of an entire region at the hands of his father, Cid nan Garlond and several of his engineers defect from the Empire. In Eorzea, Cid founds the Garlond Ironworks and readies the Eorzean Alliance for war by creating magitek enhanced weapons and airships.
[1563] (14 y/a)
- Unwilling to divert their forces away from the Dragonsong War and the most recent awakening of Nidhogg any longer, the Holy See of Ishgard withdraws from the Eorzean Alliance, closing its gates to all but the Temple Knights.
- Limsa Lominsa, Ulâdah, and Gridania remain an Alliance in name only. As the Age of Calm settles over Eorzea, the alliance disbands its drafted armies, leaving countless scores of infantry without work.
- AÂ famed Lominsan mercenary leader by the name of Lodewicus the Leal establishes the Adventurersâ Guild, an organization for the displaced sellswords to find work bettering the realm and its smallfolk. The Guild acted as an intermediary, finding capable takers for a variety of tasks submitted by townsfolk-in-need. Thus begins a decade-long time period known as the Age of Adventure.
- The Adventurersâ movement was not warmly received by all. With the flood of new adventurers entering the cities, many smallfolk found their jobs and livelihoods taken over by these hired workers. This compounded Ulâdahâs unemployed Ala Mhigan refugee crisis, heightened tensions with foreign poachers in Gridania, and guilds across the realm reported a noticeable decline in the quality of their goods.
[1569] (8 y/a)
- Imperial Dreadnaughts of the XIVth Legion begin shooting down airships over Eorzean skies. Garlemald increases airship patrols over their annexed nations. Hostilities come to a head when a Highwind Skyways airship transporting several civilian passengers is shot down.
- Between Dravanian attacks and Imperial Dreadnaught patrols, Highwind Skyways suspends all regular airship service indefinitely. Flights become limited to instances of âextraordinary circumstance.â
[1572] (5 y/a)Â
- Nael van Darnus and her VIIth Legion leave the Far East and occupy Ala Mhigo, driving the slaves there to redouble their military efforts. The VIIth and XIVth Legions harry the city-states, cutting off trade routes in and out of Eorzea. Trade between the East and Eorzea begins to dwindle.
- The newly appointed Elder Seedseer of Gridania, Kan-E-Senna, urges the nations of Ulâdah and Limsa Lominsa to reform the Grand Companies of eld.Â
- The second incarnation of the Meteor Project comes to fruition in the recently Garlean-occupied Mor Dhona. Dalamud descends upon Eorzea. The XIVth Legion retreats to Ala Mhigo to crush Ala Mhigan resistance there. The VIIth Legion entrenches itself in Mor Dhona, sending out cohorts to attack the city-states.
- The Calamity and the start of the 7th Umbral Era. The calendar Year resets to Year 1. For the next 5 years, the XIVth Legion pushes into Eorzea, creating castrums to prepare for another round of invasion. However, all further aggression halts as First Garlean Emperor Solus zos Galvusâs health sharply declines.
[0005 7th Umbral Era] (~1 y/a)Â
- Operation Archon. The Eorzean Alliance pushes back in a unified assault on all Garlean castrums, rooting any planned Imperial advance. Gaius van Baelsar, legatus of the XIVth Legion is slain. The empire quickly sends reinforcements to the Eorzean castrums to hold their position.
[0001 7th Astral Era] (~1 y/a)Â
- Solus zos Galvus passes. A War of Succession breaks out between the Emperorâs youngest son and the Emperorâs grandson. During this War of Succession, the resistance in Doma rebels, taking back several villages from the Garleans.
- The War of Succession ends abruptly with the grandson, Varis zos Galvus, taking control over his uncle. Varis tightens his grip on the East, the Doman rebellion is put down, its capitol is razed, and anyone captured associated with the rebellion is publicly executed alongside their families as an example to Othardâs other peoples.
- Yugiri leads a group of surviving Doman refugees to the island nation of Hingashi (and its cities Kugane and Bukyo) seeking asylum. Hingashi refuses them, fearing theyâd face the fate of Bozja and Doma. The refugees then sail to Thavnair. They are also refused there. Yugiri finally turns towards Eorzea, sailing for two months to reach Vesper, whereupon Ul'dah also refuses them aid. The Doman refugees finally settle in a border town in Mor Dhona called Revenantâs Toll.

Is there lore regarding soul crystals and spirit binding?
Spiritbinding
Garratt: âNo, this sword is mine, and if you want it, youâll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands! Which, in truth, is how aetherial gear comes to be. Youâve heard of spiritbonds, I assume? That spiritually charged aetherial connection you form with any gear you have equipped? Well, in rare cases, when someone wielding an item with an especially strong spiritbond is slain in battle, the energy created by that bond remains trapped inside, rather than returning to the Lifestream. The fact that for an item to become aetherial, the owner of that item must perish while having it equipped, usually means that they can only be found in dangerous locations where terrible, bloody battles have occurred.â
Swynbroes:Â âMateria, strictly speaking, is a kind of crystal. It is created by reducing equipment into its aetheric constituents and then crystallizing them.â
Fhobhas:Â âNot just any old equipment will serve, mind you. It must have sufficient spiritbondâthat being a measure of how fully an item has been imbued with its ownerâs spirit.â
Soul Crystals
Upon the surface of these multi-aspected crystals are carved the myriad deeds of heroes from eras past.
Encyclopedia Eorzea: âEver since the height of the Allagan Empire in the Third Astral Era, the practice of using crystals to store and impart knowledge has been prevalent in Eorzea. An adornment known as a âsoul crystalâ is worn close to the skin, where the uncommonly clear facets of the carefully cut shard catch and transcribe the ebb and flow of a soulâs aetherial composition - effectively capturing an imperfect echo of the wearerâs memories. This arcane tool engraved with the myriad deeds of heroes from eras past was employed by many of the disciplines of yesteryear to preserve and pass on the skills of successive generations of masters.
The wisdom contained in a soul crystal, however, is not so easily drawn forth - an untrained neophyte cannot simply pick up one of these gems and expect his mind to be flooded with the knowledge of advanced spellcraft and combat techniques. Without first attaining sufficient proficiency and tempering oneâs soul to mirror the maturity of the crystalâs contributors, a prospective student will be denied even the slightest glimpse of enlightenment. Thus, as is the case with the more contemporary disciplines, the key to mastering the secrets of a soul crystal lies in diligent study and training.â
Encyclopedia Eorzea: âDisciplines that are referred to as ârediscovered,â after being lost or simply falling out of favor, are not defined by any one period of history. The art of the summoner began in the Third Astral Era, whilst black mages, white mages, and scholars did not emerge until the Fifth. Even more recently, the techniques of paladins and dark knights were not established until after the beginning of the Sixth Astral Era. What all of these disciplines do have in common, however, is the use of soul crystals to pass on the knowledge and experience of their forebears.
This brings us to the present time, and the emergence of entirely new professions. The most prominent of these must be said to be the firearm-wielding machinists and their inception in the city-state of Ishgard. Combining the techniques of Lominsan musketeers with the revolutionary technology of the aetherotransformer, this unique discipline has continued to evolve on the very crest of modern accomplishment. In the absence of established guilds, the proponents of such nascent arts will be responsible for taking up newly crafted soul crystals, and recording their discoveries and achievements for the benefit of future generations.â
Paladin (Ulâdah, 960~970 6AE)
Jenlyns:Â âYou have taken your first steps on a new path, and you have earned the right to bear this, the Soul of the Paladin. Upon its surface are carved the deeds of paladins of eras past. She who bears it commands the respect of all knights of honor.Give me that soul. It is polluted and I must dispose of it. When you come to wield your sword as a Paladin, the only soul you may wear is that which is bestowed by a captain of the Sultansworn. That traitor is no Sultansworn, still less a captain. By giving you a soul, he insulted not only the brotherhood, but you, too.â
Solkzagyl: âThe souls we paladins wield are embodiments of our will. In keeping to our oaths, they grow stronger, more dominant. In the presence of a particularly pure soul, others may be compelled to yield⌠But when two souls cannot reconcileâwhen one cannot establish dominanceâit can spell disaster. As the discordance between two souls grows, the aether builds, and the souls grow unstable. You fight. Your souls demand it. You two cannot coexist as you are. One must rise above.â
Warrior (Abalathiaâs Spine, Pre-11th Century 6AE)
Curious Gorge:Â âIn your hands lies the Soul of the Warriorâa crystal within which the deeds of a thousand thousand warriors from history are recorded. For countless generations, the Soul has been passed on to those in my tribe who choose the path of the warrior, to guide them and aid them on their journey. When your inner beast awakens, the runes will resonate, further empowering your will, and granting you such strength as you never thought possible.â
Duty and the Beast:Â âMerely recalling your duel with Curious Gorge causes your inner beast to stirâa revelation which leads Broken Mountain to remember a passage he came across in his research: âOnly the flames of animosity may temper a warriorâs soul.â He interprets this to mean that the inner beast stirs when a warrior faces an opponent who pushes him to surpass his physical and mental limits, and that only in that moment can he attain mastery of new techniques. Believing this to be the means by which the heroes of eld achieved their legendary feats, he implores you to challenge yourself as they did.â
Dark Knight (Ishgard, 968 6AE)
Fray: âThe threshold we refuse to cross is a line we draw for ourselves. We fear the consequences, and people suffer for our indecision. Everyone who held that crystal came to conquer that fear, and became who they wanted to be. That knight was the first. Will you be the next?â
Fray: âNot so fast. We need to talk about whatâs happening to youâwhatâs growing within you, before you get carried away. Thereâs a darkness within us allânothing dangerous, mind. In fact, itâs quite healthy. But the crystal changes youâgives you the power to channel it. Do it without proper training, however, andâŚwellâŚit might hurt. Now, bear in mind that while the darkness gives you strength, that strength comes at cost. That is but one sacrifice, thoughâand justice demands many.â
Fray: âAh, yes, the voice. The one you heard when you first touched the crystal. An excellent question, but a difficult one to answer. Some say it is a beacon, guiding the dark knight to her true calling. Whose is it, you ask? Only you can discover that, for each knight must hearken to a different voice. As you grow more accustomed to drawing upon your darkside, you will come to hear it more clearly. âŚI should mention that, in some instances, the voice is said to be that of anotherâone whom the dark knight is fated to seek out. If that is the case, you may have a long journey ahead of youâŚâ
Monk (Ala Mhigo, 6th Century 6AE)
Widargelt:Â âThis is a soul crystal. It is the mark of my order. Only those in the monkhood may carry it. It is given to novices upon completion of their training. But I have witnessed your transformation. You are ready. Take it. Many bore that crystal before you. It remembers them. Their breath and their movement. They will one day be yours. But your chakra must open further. Only then can the crystalâs memories enter you.â
Dragoon (Ishgard, 6th Century 6AE)
Alberic:Â âI require your help, âyou, who have received the power of the dragon. You may labor to believe it, but there can be no mistake. The Soul of the Dragoon I bear glows in your presenceâirrefutable proof that you are chosen. What I can ill explain, however, is the why of it. The fact of the matter is that you are now a vessel for the power of the dragon. That dragon lies yet in slumber, however, and you must needs possess the means to wake it: the Soul of the Dragoon. I would entrust you with mine, Sounsyy.â
Estinien:Â âBehold the drachen mail, forged in the lifeblood of dragons. As blood calls to blood, so too does the armor call to the dragon within, redoubling the Azure Dragoonâs strength thereby. When an Azure Dragoon hangs up his lance, ancient custom decrees that he seal away his drachen mail at the fields of his valor. You must journey to such places and claim the armor for yourself. Your Soul of the Dragoon will serve as the key to lifting the seals.â
Ninja (Hingashi, Unknown)
Oboro: âAh⌠You have my gratitude. When one of our kind falls, tradition dictates that we return their soul to the village, that it may rest with our ancestors. My fallen brother saw you as a worthy inheritor to his soul. To honor his memory, I entrust it to you. But soul alone will not make you a shinobi. No, this will require training of the body and mind.â
Bard (Gridania, 11th Century 6AE)
Jehantel:Â âThe charm is a crystal known as the Soul of the Bard. Pukno Poki asked that you bring it to me, aye, but he meant for you to have it. It is a gift from the moogles, bestowed upon those they deem worthy of walking the path of the true bard. The Soul of the Bard harbors memories of the past - verses and refrains sung by the bards of old. As you gain in worldly experience, more of these memories will find expression through your being, imbuing your songs with powers untold.â
Jehantel:Â âWould you believe that common bards, too, were born of archers? This may seem far-fetched upon first hearing, but it isnât so far a stretch. Ask yourself this: what becomes of soldiers when conflict gives way to peacetime? Some have lives they might return to, aye, but most needs take up a new trade to make ends meet. Well, it so happened that many who had once bent the bow took to strumming the harp. They wandered the realm, singing passionately and earnestly of the war as seen through their own eyes - of sweet victories and bitter defeats, of sacrifice and cowardice. Their songs so captured the imagination of the people, nary a day passed that a bard was not called to perform, be it in humble tavern or some great lordâs hall. Alas, their popularity proved their downfall. Intoxicated by the attention of the masses, the bards took to embellishing their songs in a bid to outdo one another. And over time, each song was shorn of verity, till the bardâs repertoire contained not one shred of truth. By now you will know that such songs have no purchase upon menâs hearts. For a blessing, this decline did not escape the notice of the moogles. As great patrons of the arts, they feared that the true power of song might be lost to mankind. So it was they labored to gather and safeguard those crystals known as Souls of Bard, that they might be bestowed upon worthy men and women.â
Machinist (Ishgard, Recent)
Soul of the Machinist:Â âUnlike other soul crystals, the surface of this multi-aspected stone has yet to be carved with the record of past deeds.â
*Machinist lore illustrates that there are modern methods in Eorzea to crafting Soul Crystals, but the particulars are unknown.
Black Mage (Mhach, 5AE)
Yayake:Â â I-It is exactly as described in the tales! Could it truly be the Gem of Shatotto? Twelve be good, I can feel the magic within it! The stories tell that only souls blessed by the grace of Nald'thal are granted the keeping of the Gem of Shatotto.â
Dozolmeloc:Â âGem is proof that Sounsyy is true black mage. Gem brims with magical power. Without the Gem of Shatotto, impossible to control, the most powerful black magic is! Squaaawk! Lost control, these mages did. Aether within their own bodies ignited! Burned alive from the inside. Painful way to die, it is.â
Summoner (Allagan Empire, End of 3AE)
Yâmhitra:Â âBefore we begin, I must insist that you accept this gem. It may appear of little worth, but within its faceted depths dwell the memories of long-deceased summoners.â
Scholar (Nym, 5AE)
Alka Zolka:Â âAccording to the tablet, the crystal from which the faerie sprang forth is called the Soul of the Scholar, and it contains the wisdom of those long-dead Nymian mages. With it, you can call upon the faerie as you did before and bind her to your will.â
Las Vegas Lore Panel:
Q: âTo follow up on a question from the stream earlier- the taxonomy that fairies fall into. Is there an origin to how they become fairies of Scholars. Were they fairies and then bound to scholars? or did the scholars create them?âMCKF: âYes, the second one. Fairies again, while they fall under the taxonomy of elementals, they are actually beings that were created. They did not exist before. The Scholar would take the energies and elements from around them and would basically create these beings that were made of the elements.âQ: âThose are bound to the soul crystal then and passed from one person to the next where carbuncle is more one per person. Very cool.â
White Mage (Amdapor, 5AE)
Raya-O-Senna:Â âAnd, as you act in my name, I hereby permit you the use of white magic. Take here this linkpearl and Soul of the White Mage. The latter is an ancient crystal imbued with the light of succor - by its power, the forbidden art will be yours to wield, albeit within the bounds of your skill as a conjurer. To walk the path of the white mage is to devote oneself to the salving of hurts and the lifting of misery - ours is the hand that proffers comfort. Should it every come to light that you have used your powers for less virtuous ends, be forewarned you will promptly be dispossessed of the crystal and summarily punished.â
A-Towa-Cant:Â âI lived a long and fruitful life. But when I drew my last breath in O'Ghomoro that day, I did so with one profound regret- that I would pass from this realm without finding a worthy inheritor to bequeath my knowledge in full. My spirit left my lifeless body to abide in this soul crystal, with the hope that one day it would find its way into the hands of my successor. From the moment you took my crystal in hand, I knew. Padjal or no, I had at long last found one to whom I could truly pass on my knowledge.â
Astrologian (Sharlayan, Onset of 6AE)
Levava:Â âYou. You must take the Soul of the Astrologian and place it near your heart.Listen to the tales of those who walked before you, and know their journeys as you do your own.As for the tools you require and the knowledge needed to wield them, I, Leveva, shall see to those matters.â
Levava: âGrandfatherâs soul crystal⌠Why would he leave it here, surrendering any power he might have had to free himself from those bandits?â
*Suggests that, like Black Mage, Astromancy cannot be performed properly without a soul crystal in ones possession.
I know a lot of people and roleplayers tend to write Soul Crystals off as mechanic/gameplay only, but there is quite a bit of lore about them and how the soul and spirit interacts with the physical plane. In fact, the entirety of the Paladin 50-60 questline is about soul crystals, so they are an intended canon part of the world lore. Most soul crystals act in similar manners and serve a similar function, as you can see above. Not all jobs require a soul crystal, some seem to. Others seem more honorary. That part I leave up to individual interpretation.
Hope this helps! ^^

Behold! The grand chart for flower language compiled by @hasty-touch & @halonic. After being introduced to it, a number of folks have taken to using bouquets, delivered within Ishgard (and perhaps without) to convey messages. Can confirm that House Pepin delivers discretely and provides excellent service.
:3 This is just a thing I compiled from loads of PDFs and stuff because I was going batty from flipping between 20 different browser tabs.
Since itâs publicly viewable now I may work on neatening it some over the next few weeks!
Once upon a time @hasty-touch and I somehow ended up screeching âFLORIOGRAPHY???â at one another, and then weeks later he and @halonic made this gem happen, and suddenly the sea of books and browser tabs parted, and I was at peace. I never close this spreadsheet. It is my home. We are one.
(( Signal boosting because these are the most thorough nerds Iâve ever seen and this list is wonderful.Iâve referenced it countless times already! ))
Oh cool as heck
