“i passed a window on my way to class and when i saw my reflection i literally had to stop and look at myself. my eyeliner is really good. like, i thought i fucked it up this morning, but i was wrong.”

“god, well if i had to pick one, when i was sixteen my friend and i went to a sex shop. i found a pair of six inch stripper heels. they were silver, covered in glitter, and they had pink crystal roses on the bottom. super tacky sounding, i know. at the time i thought they were really cool. the guy wouldn’t sell them to us so we ran out of the shop with them. that was the first pair of heels i got on my own. like, without my mom picking them out for me. it felt really good. i don’t wear them anymore, but they’ll sit in the back of my closet until the day i die. –do shoes count as a clothing item? if not, than probably the nipple tassels i wore to my first pride.”

the sink was covered in silver glitter and so were her hands. she didn’t seem to mind though. posing in from of the mirror, hand modeling, like she meant for it to look that way. she quickly zipped up her dress then called out to teddy in the other room, “come in here so i can rub this on your torso.” of course, she was impatient, so before he had a chance to respond she was marching out of the bathroom with the jar of glitter in hand.  “take your shirt off. -- wait, no, leave it on. just undo the top buttons.”

Attempting to push his way through the crowded hallway of the party Beau was currently attending, a joint dangled from his mouth due to both hands being occupied, drink in each. Recognizing a familiar face once he’d finally made his way into the living room, Beau attempted to wave, task difficult when he was so busy, “Hey!” he tried to shout over the music, proving to be trickier than he thought with the joint still in the corner of his mouth, before holding out one of the cups towards the other, “Hi, sorry - I lost the girl I came here with. Want a drink? You look very nice tonight. Are you with anyone? Mind if I join you?”

she was very visibly drunk already. with strands of blonde hair falling in front of her eyes and neon green eyeliner smudged across her cheeks because she’d already started to sweat it off. there was a smile on her face when beau approached her, but then he spoke and the smile fell.  “i am not a second choice.” she snapped at him, but though she seemed angry at the comment she still took the drink she was offered. lux pinched her nose with her fingers and managed to swallow it in three large gulps, carelessly tossing the cup behind her before looking back at him, “i guess i forgive you. the guy i came with said he preferred christina over britney...so it’s been a rough night for me.” 

the crack of a glass hitting the floor drew juno’s attention away from her purse and up toward the incoming lux. welcoming her with open arms and a wide grin, she knew better than to comment on her underage friend’s appearance at the bar - lux sometimes got in with less of a hassle than juno. it was something in the way the other girl carried herself, it was no wonder she wound up the center of attention no matter where she went. “i, uh,” juno started, eyes darting to her bag on the floor when lux turned her attention toward it, “yeah,” giggling at the sight of lux standing on a condom that had fallen to the floor, “yeah it’s mine. why are you here alone?”

she wrapped her arms around juno for a hug, squeezing tightly and holding on longer than she really should have. it was the liquor in her system making her more affectionate than she normally would be.  “god, you smell so good. it smells like cologne and ball cheese in here.” the bag and the items in it were still spread across the floor when she started to raise her voice, making sure everyone nearby could hear what she was saying, “isn’t it so funny that all these useless men are just sitting on their fat asses instead of picking up your shit for you? chivalry is fucking dead.” she stuck a middle finger up at the first stranger to look her way, but still hadn’t attempted to pick up juno’s things herself.  “baby, i’m a crowd on my own...does that -- does that even make sense? i’m drunk. want me to buy you a drink?”

if juno had her way, an adoring mob of fans would run into her arms every time she so much as walked into a public bathroom - but delusions of grandeur were par for the course in the bean family, and she could hardly mask the disappointment on her face when no horde of admirers were perched at the door awaiting her arrival to the bar. scuffed white cowboy boots slugging their way to the bar counter, she plopped down and drawled out her order like a chore, hardly noticing when her bag tumbled to the floor, the contents of which spilled across the dirty linoleum. “fuck.”

if it weren’t for a quality fake i.d. and some heavy makeup lux wouldn’t have been in the bar at all. fortunately for her she knew how to get what she wanted and more often that not she got it. she was already tipsy. an older man had been sending drinks her way and making eyes at her across the room. she didn’t acknowledge him much. she was strictly there to drink. it was a pregame before she actually went out to party. she didn’t notice juno at first but when she did she dramatically dropped the drink in her hand. with no care for where it landed or who would clean it up. she raced to the girl, shoving strangers in the process, as if where she needed to be was more important than anyone else’s well being. to her it was.  “what the fuck are you doing here alone?” the sentence came out like a bark, but there was a wide smile on her face. without noticing it was there she stepped on the bag, a confused expression when she looked back at her friend, “is that yours?”

              kindness didn’t work for everyone. clearly.    still, this could work.   this could work wonderfully for rose.  men love a damsel in distress     &     if she had to give up her pride to feign being  – what was it ?  bullied  ?  – then she will.   for love.       “      scary.      ”      she offers, a nod following as if attempting to validate the girl she was now sitting in front of.   like a mother who’d just seen her child in their third grade halloween costume.   “      very scary.      ”        giving up her pride was definitely easier said than done, especially with the biting anger that warned to SPEW OUT after receiving said threats.   a grin that forms over her lips and a reminder of her end goal helps her swallow the condescending words begging to crawl out.      “      i’m not really a huge fan of bacardi,  i’m more of a cognac girl.   probably because of my french roots.      ”      the nonexistent french roots that she somehow convinced herself she truly had.        “      cognac, france.   a mere five hour drive from the city of love.   have you ever been to france ?      ”

                MAKE FRIENDS, ROSE.     the words of her therapist rings true in her head   &   for the first time since their sessions began she decided to actually take the woman’s advice.      “      okay, i think i have officially reached nerd status.      ”      a huff exits from her throat, hands free their grip from a large book, allowing it to thump on the table in front of her.       “      i literally stayed in all night and studied. like, i studied.  i missed the party because i studied.      ”     her timbre went into a whimper at the end, a pout playing on lips as she finally lowered herself into a chair.      “      promise me if you see me wearing glasses with tape in the middle and rocking   (  steve urkel suspenders  )    you will hit me with a car.      ”       what a way to begin a conversation.       “      seriously, if i survive the impact, i won’t even sue. in fact i’ll probably thank you.      ”

“sign my petition?” she had sat herself down at a makeshift ‘booth’ on the campus quad - a fold-able table consisting of a green tablecloth thrown over it and scattered confetti bits, like sprinkles atop an ice cream sundae - her cherry was, of course, the clipboard she’d begun to slide over with the tip of her pointer finger, chin resting atop the palm of her other hand as she leaned forward. “i’ll make it worth your while. free tarot reading, fortune told - handie in a Starbucks bathroom, i’m not picky.”

long blonde hair bounced behind her as she made her way across the quad. earbud in one ear and her bedazzled cellphone pressed against the other. obnoxiously talking to a friend about their plans for that night. the conversation just so happened to end as she passed the green table. she almost continued walking before she noticed that the brunette was in fact talking to her. “i already bought a metal straw and now everything i drink tastes like a battery. fuck turtles.” it was clear in her response that she hadn’t actually been listening.
