Critical Review Feedback W11
Can shorten âMedia and Processesâ paragraph â âAs for media and processes, I lean predominantly towards digital tools and platforms such as AdobeâŚâ
Add quotes from people: âResearch is always a crucial aspect of the creative processâŚâ âDesign, in my view is a means to foster impact and encourage positive change.â
Church section â Take example of a church/cathedral that you really like and talk about the physical space. You can say that in the past, the beauty and decorations of the buildings were enough to encourage people to come to church but now in the digital age, we need more than that to reach our audience and this is where graphic design comes in.
Title is great. Think of a way to include graphic design in it and not just user experience. âDesigning for a Higher Purpose: Nurturing Music, Faith, and Social Good through Graphic and UX Design.â Too long??
Week 11 - Critical Review
Referencing Footnotes
You should use footnotes when you need to clarify some information such as quotations, copyrighted material, definitions of words from a different language.
Referencing Images
In your text, refer to figures by their number (i.e., figure 1 or figure 2). Do not refer to figures simply as âthe figure belowâ or âthe figure above.â This is vague and can cause confusion when referring to multiple figures in the same paragraph. Place the figure as close as possible to the part of text where you are referencing it. Proximity helps the reader locate the relevant figure. Number the figures consecutively in the order they appear in your document beginning with figure 1.Â
Critical Review version 1
Week 10 - Critical Review
A diptych is "an artwork consisting of two pieces or panels, that together create a singular art piece these can be attached together or presented adjoining each other.â In medieval times, panels were often hinged so that they could be closed and the artworks protected.
A poster is "a type of graphic design." Poster artists utilize graphic design and usually have more flexibility and freedom beyond traditional marketing methods. The current focus on digital advertising offers opportunities for interactivity and dynamic designs that could transform poster art in new ways."
We have been encouraging the standard format on the left, however, we will allow those who are trying to really push the brief to explore alternatives that expand on the diptych poster idea. E.g. folding posters, flaps and QR codes.
Experiment your ideas through mock ups - so you can test out if it actually works and can be displayed easily on a wall without ripping, falling apart, etc?
[Draft] Essay - Section 7: Conclusion
Instructions
Here we want you to discuss the key findings from research and critical takeaways that will propel your practice into year 3 over the 12-week course. Consider:
What were the key findings and tools that have shaped the way you approach research and writing?
What were the critical reflections that have shaped your ideas, process, and approach to subject matter and/or media?
What research tools did you discover from surveying best practice?
What was challenging about the research and critical writing? What areas did you need to strengthen?
How has the research into creative communities shaped the way you will approach Design Research IV and the internship course GRAD704 in 2024?
--
During my journey of research and exploration, I have uncovered key findings that have enriched my understanding of creative practice and equipped me to delve deeper into my areas of interest.
The design work I've undertaken to date represents only a fraction of my creative ambitions. While my past projects have touched upon a few of my interests, my vision for the future extends far beyond these boundaries. I aspire to explore and integrate a broader spectrum of creative disciplines, including my passions for graphic design, faith, music, social impact, and user experience design. I view my current design work as a stepping stone towards this expansive vision, and I am excited to realize the full potential of my creative ambitions.
It has reminded me that sometimes, one must take to the lead to seize opportunities, and reach out to organisations and individuals to expand network â a principle I applied when securing my internships. Additionally, the value of lifelong learning has been underscored. I am prepared to approach any opportunity with enthusiasm, a can-do attitude, and a growth mindset.

[Draft] Essay - Section 6: Reflections on the Research Poster
Instructions
Here you will introduce, analyse and reflect on your poster and you could use these prompts:
Reflect on the graphic system that you used to represent your 20 x elements. Why was this specific system employed?
How is this visual system intrinsic to the nature of the elements / ideas you examined? What have you revealed about your sensibility as a designer?
Discuss the success of the artifact and the system you used to write and analyse each element.
Reflection on 2 x elements that challenged the way you thought about ideas and contexts. Why?Â
What categorisations emerged from analysis and reflecting on the elements + writing? List these.
Discuss one important new link or connection you discovered and have researched after finishing the poster?
Name one new idea or influence you gained from reading and viewing a peer's poster.
--
In my diptych/poster, the 20 objects cover the areas of faith, music, and social good. There are also a few other ones more personal to me but still contribute to my inspiration as a designer. I created illustrations to showcase my long-term aspiration to excel in this craft.
The recurring layout, characterised by uniformity, represents my inclination towards organisation and order. However, within this project, I recognize the opportunity for growth and personal development. Object 17, empty notebook collections, symbolizes my desire to break free from the constraints of my perfectionist tendencies. The duality of my artistic journey is encapsulated through the interplay between my individuality and my role as a creative professional.
[Draft] Essay - Section 5: Identifying Communities of Interest
Instructions
In this section you will clarify what you have learnt from investigating into creative + other communities, industry sectors, studios and agencies. Consider these prompts:
What did you discover about the wider creative communities?
What entities or specific initiatives did you identify and examine? What drew you to these?
Did you survey or investigate specific organisations or structures, or publishing entities?
What are your aspirations in the next 3+ years? Are you drawn to agencies, in-house design studios, or freelancing activity?
--
The creative community is vast and very diverse. It encompasses a large range of disciplines and specialisations which fosters a rich exchange of ideas and collaboration opportunities across different creative domains.
Many creatives are actively engaged in projects that address social and environmental issues. They aim to raise awareness, advocate for change, and drive meaningful impact. It reflects the role creativity can play in addressing pressing global challenges.
I was drawn to the design work Stephen James Hart created for Gateway Church in Hamilton because of its fusion of graphic design, typography, photography, and spirituality in a modern light. He is the director of that church and has been responsible for the album designs which also resonate with my passion for music.
My participation as a violist in APOâs Summer School for three years made me interested in their âModern Classicsâ campaign made by Stanley St. The creative initiative of AI-generated visuals to reimagine classical music legends in contemporary scenarios rejuvenated the art form in an attempt to reach younger audiences.
Jory & Coâs âHistory-Making Profits, World-Ending Emissionsâ project showcased how design can raise awareness of complex issues, such as climate change, through branding, infographics, and social assets. Their work reflects my desire to use design as a means to drive important conversations and inspire action.
In the next 3+ years, the aspirations that I have encompass both personal and professional development. With expanding your skills, itâs important to stay up-to-date with the latest trends, tools and technologies to ensure ongoing learning and pursing certifications in relevant areas.
I would like to gain experience working in a design agency, but also larger companies with in-house design studios where I can collaborative with other creatives and professionals in a real-world setting.
Through this collaboration, I can gain mentorship in the workplace, workshops, courses, etc., that will assist my development in as a creative. Regardless of my endeavours, I am committed to actively seek out opportunities that push my boundaries.
[Draft] Essay - Section 4: Contextual Review, Creative Positioning
Instructions
This is where you are explaining the current state of knowledge in the field. What did you uncover, what is best practice and what conceptual/academic thinking did you uncover?
Here you acknowledge the projects, practices, writings and people who are the most influential on your thinking, ideas and practice. Consider these prompts:
Describe 4 x designers / artists creative practices and specific projects you have researched;
Refer to the thematic and categorisations you articulated in week 8
Discuss the key concepts, and contexts (including themes).
For all 4 x case studies talk about the significance of their work and its impact on communities + your thinking/practice.
Can you include a seminal quote from an author who has written about their work? (and accurately reference it)
Can you include and correctly caption images?
--
One of the people I have chosen from the creative community is Stephen James Hart. He is a creative director specialising in graphic design, typography and photography, and serves as Creative Director at Gateway Church in Hamilton. In addition to branding for Gateway Aotearoa, he has also made album designs for newly released worship songs which blends my music and spiritual affinity into design.
--
I came across this campaign titled âModern Classicsâ released in December 2022 in New Zealand. It was created for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO), by ad agency Stanley St. This print medium campaign contains 3 media assets. The APO is an organisation I have connected with as I participated as a violist in their Summer School for 3 years.
The classical orchestra was once the epitome of cultural entertainment, but now struggles to captivate the younger audiences. Using AI-generated visuals, this series offered a reimagined look at the roles and celebrity status these legendary figures would take up if they were alive today (Stanley St, 2022).
The copywriting has a consistent and compelling headline sentence structure that resonates the message. What stands out is the juxtaposition of musical legends in unlikely contemporary scenarios: Beethoven with an iPhone on TikTok, Mozart wearing headphones selling out on stadiums, and Bach mixing beats in a sound studio and doing a collab with Gaga (Ads of the World, 2022).
The clever interplay injects a delightful sense of humour and prompts us to consider these classical geniuses in our modern, technology-driven world. Additionally, it employs artificial intelligence, a topic that has recently risen and continues to spark debate and discussion in todayâs digital landscape.

Jory & Co, a design studio focused on social and environmental impact created History-Making Profits, World-Ending Emissions project for their client âEnergy Profits,â a group of international investigative journalists and researchers. This project was selected as a finalist for the Public Good Award, Design Communication and Small Scale Websites categories at the 2022 DINZ Best Awards.
In this work, they created a distinctive brand, website, infographics, video, and social assets to be used and referenced by the national media and partner climate organisations. Clean type, powerful photography, bold data visualisation and animated figures were employed to make the message easily understood and difficult to ignore. The âEâ icon in the brand identity, including the logo symbolises the growth of profit, remuneration, emissions, and environmental degradation. Black and white is combined with warm tones of red, orange, and yellow symbolising the increasing Earthâs temperature and growing climate devastation. (Jory and Co, n.d.).

DNA helps New Zealandâs leading businesses and government agencies unlock new ideas, uncover opportunities for improvement, achieve growth and deliver transformative experiences for their customers and employees.
One of their clients was Kiwibank whom they redesigned the public website for as part of a brand-led transformation across culture, product, and technology. They reimagined a digital banking experience that âenables customers to thriveâ as the new brand strategy. The new website has allowed the largest New Zealand-owned bank to reposition itself, attracting and retaining a new, progressive type of customer.
From the research, it was highlighted that the focus on products and finance within many banking sites caused a gap between customers comprehension on information. They designed an interface that mirrored a conversation from banking terminology to every-day language, aiding the understanding of content (DNA, n.d.).
[Draft] Essay - Section 3: The Creative, Positioning the Researcher
Instructions
This is where you will introduce yourself as a creative maker, thinker and research. Defining in 3-4 points:
The key values and ideas that underpin your practice;
The conventions, media and processes that you gravitate towards;
The key methods and tools you use to undertake research, locate ideas and context, to find a topic, subject matter and themes;
Share your point of view about the role and importance of design. This could be for a specific social or cultural impact, audience or cause, sustainability, gender issues, equality etc;
--
My practice is rooted in certain key values and ideas that drive my work, informed by my experiences and aspirations. My multidisciplinary approach includes communication and interaction  with themes in music, faith, and social good. The wide range of topics and themes enriches my creative process.
As for media and processes, I lean predominantly towards digital tools and platforms. Graphic design finds its home in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. For interaction design, I utilise Miro and Figma to craft intuitive and user-centric digital experiences.
Research is always a crucial aspect of the creative process. The vast landscape of the internet holds a massive trove of information and inspiration. However, actively engaging with the stakeholders and audience to really understand their needs, preferences, and pain points is paramount in creating resonant solutions as well. Collaboration and open communication are valued and essential processes to ensure the success of projects.
My view on design is that it is a means of fostering impact and encouraging positive change. Whether it's through creating engaging visuals for the church community, designing campaigns for social good, or enhancing user experiences, design can be a tool for communication, education, and transformation.
--
Other Paragraphs I've Written
An essential dimension to âThe Creativeâ Iâm integrating is my faith. My family comes from a Roman Catholic background, and while Iâve always identified as a Catholic, my connection to it has deepened recently. This year, I started attending my local parish, and contributing to the ministry by playing piano with the choir at masses.
Alongside doing creating branding and promotional material for church, I aspire to leverage graphic design to nurture my relationship with Christ as my journey in faith is very personal. While I havenât undertaken any creative projects tied to Christianity due to my short time of involvement with the church, Iâm considering how having some sort of journal/diary could  be a valuable tool to harmonise my path in faith with my interest for publication/editorial design.
A faith journal or diary would serve as a personal space where I synthesis and articulate my thoughts, relections, prayers, experiences, scriptural and quote collections, regarding spirituality expressed in creative ways. It could include illustrations, typography, and other visual aids thoughtfully laid out. I aim to create a free and comfortable space for self-discovery, so I will personalize it to align with my needs and preferences, yet also design it to be engaging and aesthetically pleasing.
The Holy Bible is a historical and spiritual artefact, officially compiled in the late fourth century, and the best-selling book in the world with hundres of millions of copies printed over the past 1500 years (History.com Editors, 2018). The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is a reference work summarising the fundamental doctrines of the Catholic Church, often used as a teaching tool (Hopkins, 2023). But at a glance, the Bible and the CCC seem like plain and dense volumes, hundreds of pages long, and jam packed with text.
Both of these essential books offer a parallel to my interest in publication and editorial design. Iâve often felt frustated at the challenge of comprehending theological concepts.
I could create storytelling elements comprising of typographic designs, symbolic illustrations and capture the essence of the biblical narratives. These preserved centuries of wisdom and inspired writings can engage viewers with spiritual depth.
--
Aside from design, my other talent and passion lies in music and I play the piano and viola. From being a part of a world premiere production with New Zealand Opera, to accompanying singers, and teaching kids; my musical journey has enriched my personal growth.
My journey began when I was 8 years old. Over the years, this passion has helped me grow so much as a person. Through countless practice sessions, lessons, and rehearsals, I have been taught discipline, patience and perseverance. Through my effort and commitment, I have been rewarded with many accomplishments and awards. Music has been a big part of my life and will continue to be.
Almost everyone is familiar with music and has been exposed to various genres, but many fail to fully grasp the significance and influence it holds in our daily existence. Music serves not only as a form of artistic expression and entertainment, but also possesses the potential to be therapeutic and beneficial to our mental and physical well-being.
I would be open to designing for CDâs, album covers, posters advertisements for concerts and festivals. Additionally, I would like to do work that engages and inspires the newer generations in music education and provide the opportunity for them to explore it.
--
Design is integrated in every part of this world, from the products, services, and spaces we work, move, and live in. Design is not merely about aesthetics but also about innovating, inspiring, and offering solutions that will impact lives.
Alongside graphic design, I would like to pursue a career in the User Experience (UX), or Customer Experience (CX) design industry. In my Interaction Design Studio class last semester, I chose to redesign Webjetâs website focusing on the flight booking section.
I conducted user research such as surveys and user testing to identify problems, limitations and weaknesses of the Webjet website as well as competitor analysis research and critically examining, and comparing similar websites.
Using wireframing and prototyping in Figma, I employed a design system with typography, colour, icons, grid and components. I improved the designâs consistency and cohesiveness so that users could build the most streamline travel journey.
This project made me realise that I enjoy working on designs that improve customersâ interactions and therefore, I want to do this type of work in the future. I want to positively influence consumerâs experiences with products, services, and systems in a way that is intuitive, smooth, and pleasant.
-
Social good is a theme that will come up more frequently in my design practice as I have acquired two internships for the upcoming summer. One of them is at Good Health Design, a transdisciplinary design and research studio based in AUTâs School of Art and Design. The other is at Waiheke Resources Trust, a professional non-profit organisation the promotes sustainability and environmental responsibility on Waiheke Island (Waiheke Resources Trust, n.d.)
During the mid-term break this semester, I was diagnosed with pneumonia and admitted to the ICU with a life-threatening complication at Middlemore Hospital. This unexpected hiatus caused me to take few weeks off to recover, and revaluate my priorities in my life. This disruption and challenging ordeal has sparked an interest in design in the healthcare sector.
I look forward to my 2023/2024 summer internship at Good Health Design. Iâm excited about the prospect of collaborating with clinical experts, healthcare professionals, and researchers from different fields to empower, enhance and enrich the communities and the healthcare experience of individuals. This isnât limited to the medical needs, but also the emotional, psychological and social aspects of health (Good Health Design, n.d.).
