Euphoria (2019-2026) | 3.08 In God We Trust
THE CARRIE DIARIES 2.02 â "Express Yourself"
Heat crept into her cheeks at the line of questioning, feeling desperate to protect whatever reputation sheâd earnt herself so far this year. Her and Lukeâs relationship had only gotten worse since moving, and sheâd had to stand alone, try and forge connections. It was near impossible when everyone around her was seemingly better at everything, some not even human â but still, crying at parties couldnât end up being what she was known for.
âErm, flowers. Thereâs some in the kitchen somewhere. You didnât see âem?â Lying was in the details, and Chloe was crap at those. She looked at him then, really looked, when he said heâd defend her. âYou would do that?â Her voice was softer, quieter than it had been, the words almost lost amongst the thumping music. A total stranger, and he would look out for her? The thought brought some tears back to her eyes, still in a vulnerable state. Looking away in embarrassment, she blinked, trying to be subtler this time now that she knew he was watching. âSâalright, though. Itâs⌠a bit of a mess, really. No point you gettinâ involved in thaâ.â Yet Chloe longed to confide in someone about it. Her parents adored Lucas, and though sheâd reconnected with Mandy, revealing the truth about her seemingly perfect relationship when they were family friends felt impossible. Sheâd been left with no-one.
Donât hide that shit. Without thinking, she nodded in agreement to his statement despite behaving in the exact opposite way. But as she pressed her lips together in thought, she realised she wanted to actually agree. She wished she was the kind of person who could wear her heart on her sleeve, and everyone would respect it. But she wasnât. She wasnât popular enough, loved enough to do that.
Focusing on getting his attention in another way now, Chloe tried not to feel disheartened that he wasnât reacting the way sheâd hoped. Itâs not that she wanted anything to happen, she just craved a bit of attention, the kind she was familiar with. âAw, you have a brother? Thatâs ace. I can go and get âim if ya like? Maybe get us a drink, too?â She asked, twirling her hair with her finger. âIâm Chloe. Gemmell. You?â
âFlowers?â Fezâs eyebrows raised in disbelief. Heâd passed the kitchen on his way in, and whilst he hadnât taken the time to observe the decorations, he was almost certain he hadnât seen a vase. She seemed desperate to defend herself though, so Fez didnât question it further, not wanting to cause any upset as she scrambled for another lie. âYeah, man. âCourse I would,â he replied with a nod, glancing around as though the perpetrator was already present. It was his whole reason for attending in the first place, out of defence for his friends. Campbell needed to be taught a lesson for the way he was treating Sam, and it had to come from Fez, because he could handle the consequences. Coming from someone on the outside would scare him too, into stopping. âI can handle messy, yo. âBeen doinâ that for life. Ainât nothinâ I ainât seen or dealt with before. Whatâs on your mind? I promise I wonât tell nobody nothinâ, it stays between us.â He meant that, too. She was safe to confide in him if she wanted to.Â
âYeah, Ash. Heâs just a kid.â They both were, but that detail was lost on Fez. He hadnât had a childhood, and if he was honest with himself, Ash hadnât had one either. No matter how much heâd tried to change that, they couldnât deny how theyâd been raised. âI gottaâ be goinâ soon, I ainât planninâ on drinkinâ tonight. But Iâd be up for it some other time, for sure.â It was a casual way in saying he wanted to see her again, knowing that his plans wouldnât allow him to stay, despite the fact he now wanted to. Hopefully, she wouldnât see what he had to do. He had a feeling she couldnât handle his violent streak, even if it was for a just cause. He wouldnât have the time to explain himself afterwards either. âNameâs Fez.â He smiled, holding a hand out in introduction. âCan I like â get your number or somethinâ?âÂ

For a few moments, she gaped at him. On top of everything else, Chloe felt stunned. She hadnât expected a total stranger to take interest in her for one, especially considering how gross she mustâve looked right then, but also to contradict her. Heâd called her out, and heâd been incredibly considerate about it, which left her feeling confused. The more her walls were lowered, the more defensive Chloe got, trying to save face; but she also felt a stronger sense of comfort because of it. It was like heâd gotten through before sheâd managed to block him out.
Sniffling, she tried for another smile, unsure how to navigate her response. âWell⌠maybe. It was allergies a bit. I dunno, really. Nothinâ I canât handle, though. Boys will be boys, right?â She attempted to joke, to relate to him, but her laugh fell short. This was a lot more than a boy problem, but it was the least personal explanation. âNah, thanks, but I couldnât. Iâve already ruined my own top, and - a friend's. I donât wanâ to ruin yours, too!â She waved him off, sliding her fingers under her eyes another few times to dry the tears there. Theyâd stopped falling now, the longer she was distracted. âBut Iâm not embarrassed,â she was quick to correct him, eyebrows raised as she looked away, despite that being an obvious lie. Chloe couldnât quite meet his eyes. âEverybody has⌠allergies. And feelings anâ all that are great, totally. I agree.â
Feeling she had to change the subject or heâd never drop it, she cleared her throat, composing herself now. It was showtime. Chloe crossed one leg over the other, making sure to expose leg, turning towards him. âSo, whatcha doinâ sittinâ over here all alone, then?â
Fez would be lying to claim he wasnât confused by her response, unsure what the actual problem was, considering sheâd only half admitted it. The rest of her answer was covered by what appeared to be an extension of her first lie. âYeah, what kindaâ allergies you got? âCause last I checked there ainât no cats in here, and you ainât eatinâ nothinâ.â He raised his eyebrows, pursuing his attempt at getting her to open up. âBoys can be boys, foâ sure. Donât mean they have to be assholes. Someone said somethinâ to you or what? âCause if they have⌠I can do somethinâ. Have a word, or whatever.â
Fez wasnât sure what to believe, but at least sheâd appeared to stop crying. ââCourse we do, thatâs what Iâm sayinâ. Donât hide that shit. Whatever it is.â His eyes never left her, trying to read her, but it was hard when this was their first interaction. Fez had never been the greatest judge of character, seeing the best in everyone. As far as he was concerned, they were all people suffering in their own ways. Better to help one another, than dismiss eachotherâs struggles.
Of course Fez noticed her leg, he wasnât blind, and she was a beautiful girl. But heâd rather get to know her, first, and peel back the layers of her personality. âWaitinâ for my brother, heâs in the other room.â Now he was being dishonest, because Ash was the one waiting for the signal. Campbell hadnât arrived yet, though, so he continued with his line of questioning. âWhatâs your name then? âAinât see you around before.â
âOh, really?â She raised her eyebrows at Ash, who looked away, before turning back on Fez. âThen why is it I just spent the last twenty minutes of my life tellinâ the chief of goddamn police that yâall ainât home, youâre out plantinâ flowers or some shit, but that I swear on my daddyâs life neither of my dumb cousins know shit about some dickwad gettinâ glassed at a New Yearâs party? Hmm?â
âOhâŚÂ that shit. The fuckinâ feds came round for that? Damn. I canât believe he a snitch. What a pussy.â Fez paused for longer than usual, wondering how or if he could talk his way out of this one. Although heâd done it for the right reason, his act had been violent, and not caused by a need for self defence; he shouldâve expected this outcome considering the amount of witnesses.
Fezco glanced at Ash, who of course stayed silent, waiting to see if his brother would take an honest approach. Fez didnât really see another option, and just hoped that Ruth would understand. âLook, Ruth. Man⌠this guy deserved it, okay? Heâs a fuckinâ bitch. He keeps beatinâ on his brother, treatinâ him and his friends like shit. Ainât nobody else gonnaâ do nothinâ, so I did. I was teachinâ him a lesson.âÂ
âAlright, what the fuck did yâall do?â
ââWhat you mean, man? I ainât done shit.â Fez frowned up at her from where he sat, wondering what she could be referring to. He had recently assaulted Campbell, but thereâs no way she could know about that, unless one of the classmates had been running their mouth. âYou ainât got nothinâ to get up in my case for, Ruth. Chill.â
Chloe nearly leapt out of her skin when she realised she was being addressed, and watched. So much for subtle. How had she not noticed the hot guy on the couch? Immediately wiping away stray tears, she tried to laugh it off, insecurities raging now that sheâd been caught at her most vulnerable; and by an attractive stranger, of all people. The silver lining is she was sure he wouldnât press her, even if the lie was obvious. She just had to stifle the urge to sob. âOh, absolutely, it is, yeah. But Iâm totally fine, thanks for askinâ. Just allergies, yâknow? Kinda embarrassinâ when it hits at times like this.â
Fez shook his head in disagreement, not satisfied with her response. âNah man. I know I donât know you or nothinâ but I can tell this ainât allergies. You look hurt.â It wasnât any of his business, but he hated seeing anybody upset. If he could at least make her smile, genuinely smile, by the end of their conversation, heâd feel better. He hoped that she would, too. âIâm sorry I ainât got like a tissue or whatever. If you wannaâ use my sleeve or somethinâ itâs cool. Donât be embarrassed though, for real. You feel what you feel.â
Chloe had always worked hard to appear the most confident person in the room, but it was hard to keep up a façade when the other parts of her life sheâd so perfectly curated were openly falling apart. Lucas had stood her up again, and after waiting for him for an hour, she was no longer able to save the pain for later. Sheâd done most of her crying in the bathroom already, before Aimee helped clean her up. Now feeling tired and vulnerable, Chloe planted herself on a couch surrounded by groups of people she didnât know. It was ideal camouflage, the blonde able to subtly wipe the remaining tears away whilst no-one was watching.
Fez had only attended the party to settle a debt with Campbell, but he had to wait for the right time. Heâd finally had enough of him hurting his friends, which included Campbellâs own brother Sam. Fez couldnât comprehend how someone could be so cruel to their own family, and heâd decided a lesson needed to be taught to avoid further insult. It wasnât until the blonde sat down beside him that Fez realised he hadnât planned a way to pass the time, but perhaps this was it. She seemingly didnât notice him, but he certainly saw her, and the hand that wiped a damp spot off her cheek. âYo, hey. Whatâs wrong? Ainât this supposâ to be a party?â
