This is set during the prohibition era! Prohibition started in 1919 with the 18th amendment, which was then reversed in 1933 with the 21st amendment. During this time, the production, sale, and distribution of alcohol was illegal. People found ways around it.
Maverick was a brewer before prohibition. He made a quick switch to pharmaceuticals after. Doctors at this time were able to prescribe liquor as medicine. But Maverick also sells to secret bars, called speakeasies. They became very popular in 1925.

I kept on confusing which hand I was drawing his scar on. It's on his right hand! And since I dont trust myself to make a whole comic for this, I'll just tell you it's a burn scar. He was reckless as a teen, and cought his hand on fire while experimenting with a kerosene lamp.
I guess I'll explain what happens from then on up until Jude shows up. Maverick and Noah introduce themselves properly shortly after. Maverick nurses Noah back to health and gives him his own space in a quiet corner of the shop house. (First story is a "pharmacy", second story is his living space, basement is a secret brewery.) Noah is 14 years old here.
In 1930, when Noah is 18 and a year after the stock market crash, is when Jude meets Maverick. More on that later. My poor noggin needs rest.

In all seriousness, and not just in g/t, I love that "more than friends, less than lovers" vibe. Not much raw or suggestive feeling yet (I know everyone’s standards for that are different), but just sweet, intimate closeness and flirting.
I want them to give and get lots of headpats and hugs…
Also, the trope of "the giant character trying their absolute best to be careful so they don't hurt or crush the tiny one"… honestly, that's just the best thing ever.
By the way, I think I went a bit too far and made Trevor way too buff again… even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the main focus of this drawing.
