I was going to write a bit of a rant about CCP's standardization of mandarin but instead I am genuinely curious -- my diaspora and/or chinese speaking mutuals, what is your regional accent?

(My accent is apparently very Xi'an. My taiwanese speaking friends think I talk like a pirate.)

#i speak with my parents' zhejiang accent which means i sound like I'm 60 years old to anyone who can tell #a lot of youth these days have accents closer to standard beijing mando compared to my parents gen #(not difficult to achieve tbh)#tho i'm happy that they've still left out the ers and a certain amount of flubbing the qiaosheyin is acceptable #growing up all the other chinese speakers around me were all southern. no irl non south encounters until like middle school #dialects really are disappearing fast tho #like on my mom's side only one cousin still speaks dialect. the rest understand and can maybe say a few words and phrases #but mostly they just speak putonghua #i saw some place in zhejiang actually started a tuhua school to teach the kids the local dialect #but also as someone whose parents' dialects aren't really mutually intelligible putonghua is what i'm most used to #my parents' dialects actually are both considered wu. but like they are not mutually intelligible enough to hold a conversation #i can understand like half of what my mom says and none of what my dad says
