JESSICA RILEY

Jess is a party girl — parties are her element. Although the group is intimate, Jess always does her best to spice things up. Shes the one to initiate party games when things get too boring for her — truth or dare, spin the bottle, kiss, marry, kill, that kind of thing. Kiss, marry, kill usually has a little bit of mean undertones to it — ‘It’s not fun if they’re hot’ she always says. She’ll make you pick from a list of people she finds 'gross' or losers, sometimes right in front of them out of pure boredom if she wants to stir the pot.

EMILY DAVIS

When Em is with Jess — they always get too drunk. Pranks and mischief are kind of their thing. Sharpie on whoever falls asleep first, as we see modelled on Chris, and God forbid you fall asleep on the floor — you'll wake up surrounded by lined up bottles and solo cups waiting to fall like dominoes. If her evil twin isn't around or has ditched her to talk to someone else, Emily will usually stick by Mike's side, sipping, she's not shy, just a little selective about who she’s able to fully be herself with — comfortable enough to let loose.

MICHEAL MUNROE

Mike is not the type to drink to get sloshed, he probably nurses a few beers, maybe takes a few shots if somebody asks — but he mostly just parties to socialize. He gravitates toward open spaces like kitchens, living rooms, and outdoor spaces — standing there with the same beer he’s been nursing for an hour, really into whatever conversation he’s having. Great guy to talk to when you know nobody at the party, he’ll put an arm around you and introduce you to everyone. After the party, he will sometimes stay up late to help Beth, Hannah & Sam clean up after the party — he loves being helpful and genuinely enjoys being in the girls' company.

MATTHEW TAYLOR

Matt doesn't drink at parties, coach says "the difference between a good athlete and a great one, is one who is great will practice self-discipline always — not just when he's on the field.” You won’t usually see him around Chris or Josh, nothing personal, the party animals are just a bit much for him. He prefers to be around good conversationalists, for example, Mike, and surprisingly — Ashley.

ASHLEY BROWN

Ashley is probably in a corner talking to somebody who 'never knew she was so cool'. She surprises people because she's quiet. She's the kind of person you talk to effortlessly for hours at a party, and the whole time you're just thinking: "Wow. Who knew?" One of these people is definitely Matt. His mind was blown the night he started up a conversation with the shy girl, just to be nice, and they just fell into hours of talking so naturally.

CHRISTOPHER HARTLEY

You’ll find Chris with Josh, every time, without fail. Josh and Chris, much like Jess and Em, are trouble together — but instead of pulling pranks, Josh and Chris are just wild, they show off to eachother by doing stupid crazy things, sometimes the stunts are very gross. One time Chris drank Ashley's bong water and threw up all over the hallway. “It was epic.” Josh always says when he tells the story.

JOSHUA WASHINGTON

He and Chris are so the type to disappear for random side quests and never come back — Josh will wake up in the bathtub with a half eaten sandwich, and Chris will be curled up on the floor with the shower curtain draped over him like a blanket. If you’ve ever partied with Josh, you’d know, a drunk Josh is very prone to breaking things because of how clumsy he gets, like a bull in a china shop. He once fell back into a glass table and shattered it mid-party. His father was furious. He was quite proud of himself.

BETH WASHINGTON

I feel like Beth is not a big drinker — but she can handle her liquor. This girl can put it away better than most boys. When it comes to the keg stand, nobody in the group can beat her freakishly long time, the guys' arms get tired before she does. Josh always buys a keg for the trip and begs Beth to do it. The guys try to challenge her, and every year, they lose.

Usually though, she’s too busy keeping a watchful eye to let loose like that.

HANNAH WASHINGTON

Hannah is a lightweight for sure, she's giggly and quiet — still awkward, even loosened up by the alcohol. She's drawn to the balcony and the bathroom — quiet places where the music is fuzzy in the background. She's the type to follow the group — even when nobody there is talking to her. Nobody says it, except maybe Jess if she’s fed up enough, but Hannah is such a tag-along.

She can come on a little strong, especially when she’s drunk — she means well, but she’s very clingy.

SAMANTHA GIDDINGS

Sam doesn't drink much, if at all. To me, she doesnt seem like the type to have any interest in getting drunk. Sam isn't a party girl, but she wants to be close to her friends — she's not at the heart of the party, but you'll find her on the outskirts with a warm smile and a hearty laugh.

I have gotten into countless arguments with people who think that the group is Canadian, simply because the game is set in Canada, but i’ve always thought otherwise. Here’s some evidence:

(forgive me if some of these are wrong/slightly off, I am going off of memory and just things I picked up while playing)

1. Blackwood Pines/the lodge is stated multiple times to be a vacation home, so although that’s not outright evidence that they’re American, it opens the possibility that they could be from anywhere, really.

2. Emily mentions shopping at Rodeo, which is in L.A

3. Mike wants to be President. There’s no Canadian president (we have a Prime Minister in case you don’t know).

4. The billing address listed on Josh’s file regarding his mental treatment is Bob Washington’s studio in Burbank (L.A)

4. Also, on the ‘clippings wall’ found in the sanatorium, there is an area circled on the map with the words “American girls died” written next to (or in) the circle, if all of those clues aren’t proof enough.

Since we don’t have a character file for either of the twins, we are made to guess from what we see…

Beth, the youngest of the twins, is composed and curious. She can be a bit brutally honest, but she cares deeply.

Beth is the only character other than Sam that seems to have an affinity with animals — as we see with the very first ‘don’t move’ sequence of the game.

She’s patient, gentle and composed — which makes animals feel at ease around her. I think Sam and Beth shared an appreciation for nature — like her father, who, quote: “Thinks he’s like, Grizzly Adams or something.”

[John ‘Grizzly’ Adams was a legendary outdoorsman who became famous for capturing and training grizzly bears, raising them from cubs and forming strong bonds with them.]

Beth is annoyingly good at everything she tries. She’d win gold in a sport, then go into the next one. [This head cannon is based on the gold awards found in the basement using free cam — you can find the photos on reddit.]

Too smart for her own good.

Beth was too curious. Her father always told her: “Focus on your own two feet.”

He’d warned her about the responsibility of truth — not everybody can handle it, he’d say, and most of the time, you won’t know if the truth is worth knowing until it is too late, and you know too much.

“The best way to avoid the consequences of knowing the wrong kind of truth is to make sure nobody knows you know something you shouldn’t.”

She took that to the grave.

Unlike Hannah, who is mostly in the dark about family affairs, curious Beth is always observing quietly, collecting clues in secret. She doesn’t confront her father about the many conversations she was never meant to overhear, or whisper to Hannah in the night about what she found — she keeps it to herself, she likes to build a strong case first.

Beth swears like a sailor when she’s stressed. Melinda always said “She’s got her father’s mouth.”

[I noticed this detail in the prologue when she tries to wake up Josh, and during the chase scene in the woods.]

She’s not the kind of person who curses every sentence — when she’s in a calm state, I didn’t notice that at all in her speech patterns, but when she’s worried about Hannah? That’s a different story…

Beth is a runner. The quiet ambience of the Washington mansion at night time is often accompanied by the soft hum of Beth’s treadmill. Sometimes it’s because she can’t sleep, other times she’ll just wake up at 4 AM and start running.

Through the walls, you’ll probably hear her faint breathing and the soft sound of music bleeding through her wired headphones, her quick paced footsteps softly thudding against the belt.

She runs mostly to clear her head, but at the same time, she likes the burn in her muscles, in her legs… She likes to overexert her body until her lungs burn.

She doesn’t tell people that,

but if you payed attention,

You’d see it.

They went missing in February, meaning the reunion took place after all of his first big anniversaries without them — his first birthday without them by his side as he blew out his candles, their first birthday not being there to be celebrated, the first Christmas he didn’t get to see Hannah get too excited for — making a huge list.

Their voices are engraved in his soul, confined deep within splitting walls of his memory like a dream he only remembers the feeling of. It’s distant, the figment, but his senses won’t allow him to escape its prominence. He’d replay his last moments with them over and over — even if he can barely remember how he had ended up on the couch that night…

Sometimes he lies there, in that very spot they had put him — If he closes his eyes, he can hear them, see the blurry visions of flickering firelight behind his sister’s familiar silhouettes, smiling down at him, so painfully close, but so far out of reach.

The memory of his sisters is warm, and somehow that contrast brought him the most grief of all. He clings back, deciding that any remnants of them are welcome. It’s not the way he should remember them, but it’s the only way he can.

He refuses to let it go, to let his sister-shaped wound to close and heal over. He refuses to let them become scars, to fade away, instead he claws the wound raw, desperately trying to keep the only part of them he still has, undying. His grief.

It’s almost masochistic, the way he grieves a memory he can’t quite grasp, pulling his own heartstrings raw until every moment he has is spent wallowing in his own self-made melancholy.

The lodge was home to a lot of storage his parents didn’t want cluttering their home in L.A. — boxes of old home videos, all of the twin’s creepy old cabbage patch dolls — the ugly little fuckers boxed away among the sibling’s many discarded trophies that his mother and father only glanced at before sending to the lodge to be piled with the rest of the family’s ‘crap’ ‘cluttering up’ their picture perfect home.

Of course, both of the twin’s rooms back in L.A. had already been cleared out and remodelled — Beth’s room now a home gym and Hannah’s a trophy room — wall mounts, rugs, the works of what you can do with the body of a dead animal.

Bob grew up in Vancouver, and originally, he had wanted to study psychology, intrigued by human behaviour and their motivations — however, a pivot in his career goals was triggered when he was rejected by his University of choice. He was a bright student, he should have had no problem getting into a good school — but when it came down to him and the other applicants who had the right last name written in the top right corner of their admissions essay? Nepotism won.

He’d moved to Los Angeles to find transformation, and the fascination he had with psychology led him to a career in directing. His deep understanding of other’s psyche allowed him to make connections in Hollywood and made him a stronger director — it added dimension to his movies and to the characters in them. He was a maker of worlds, and knew just how to pull people into them.

His driving motivation is a desire to not only change the course of his life [by pursuing fame and wealth], but his lineage, to breed perfection, to build a legacy for himself. He works hard to ensure the Washington name will open doors for his children and their children.

Being a director is not ‘just a job’ to him, he embodies it — and his work follows him home. Bob has an intense need to control everything in his life, especially his family’s image and reputation.
