(t.w.: self-harm, addiction, mental illness)
ānot tonight, Mr. Young Ghost.ā
he had come in too drunk to crash, Mr. Young Ghost (alcoholic, schizophrenic, heroin addict), had it only been a little iād have let it slide, heād have zonked out in the corner on a floor mat (the bunks were always full, ALWAYS fucking full, this country has been killing itself so long, itās an art form), but he got punchy at this level, so
āno, sir, Mr. Young Ghost, not tonightā
i said, he grumbled understandingly. i was always calm with him, he knew that
ānext door?ā
he grumbled acceptingly, we started walking.
next door was county detox (drunk tank is kinda accurate but the staff are trained and caring) not my french circus, not my french contortionists (i donāt like animals being forced to perform). too drunk for the shelter, go to detox. easy peasy pizza squeezey
take him in. now heās theirs. he asks to use the bathroom. they say yes. (heās been calm with me but they should have checked his pockets like they always do, i feel guilty saying it, but there it is).
āk. later.ā i said
ālater.ā they say smiling. i know them. weāre friendly. iām heading towards the door.
then oneās yelling my name.
āheās got a knife! heās got a knife!ā
run back. three people cower behind me. Mr. Young Ghost in front, slashing at his left forearm with a pocket knife. my hands go up, palms out like iām casting a fucking forcefield, step forwardā¦
knife points at me. step back. iām talking, god knows what.
āput it down. please. let us help you. yadda yadda yaddaā
voice behind me, yelling at police on phone.
āplease, Mr. Young Ghost, look at meā
he does
āput it downā
iām begging.
āpleaseā
he drops it. my foot kicking it behind me. my palms on his shoulders not quite pinning him to the wall. red/blue lights in the window. cops in, guns out, they calm quickly. i hold his hand, keeping his arm still for the EMTās. the cops ask me to ride with him in the ambulance. hold his hand the whole way. he struggles in the soft restraints when i let go and they wheel him into the emergency room.
debrief with cops. theyāre quietly impressed. ride back to shelter in police car. wave at people in other cars from backseat. get a selfie to send friends.
check on detox folk. theyāre shaken. they hug me. they say thank you. finally get back to shelter to tell the new girl what happened. itās literally her first day. she comes back though. she was tough.
boss and coworkers sing my praises. new useless middle manager sends me flattering email. offers counseling for the four of us. not interested. work there another couple years. other things happen during. then moved on.
i donāt tell the story often. itās bleak and violent. but people who hear it sometimes tell me i was brave. and maybe i was. itās nice to think so anyway.
in reality, it was a vivid blur of blood and panic and, if iām honest, is a memory i simply kinda wish i didnāt have. i have a few memories like that. i assume everyone does.
the story doesnāt end cheerily, but thereās hope in there somewhere. there usually is.
Mr. Young Ghost recovered from that night and i saw him many more times in good ways and bad ways and a year and a half later he died.
i never found out how. you often donāt.
