I ache when I learn you're seen as aggressive. That you're mean, or ugly, or gross. It hurts to know that you're seen as wrong, or threatening. It brings tears to my eyes and a sharp pain to my chest to learn you are judged and outcasted. Disrespected and misgendered. Scrutinized and made out to be something predatory or unnatural. Labeled as a lesser-than copy of a man. To every butch out there, I'm so sorry honey.

Darling, I want- need you to know. I want you to hear it from a femme. The things stated above has never and will never describe you. You want to know what does describe you? Would you like me to teach you what you mean from the eyes a femme, what you stand for, what you represent, who you are?

Power. Strength. Gentle. Care. Bold. Bravery. Confidence. Admiration. Respect. Care. Love. Honor. Chivalry. Calm. Emotional. Empowering. Handsome. Warmth. Protection. Safety. Security. Validation. Oh how I yearn and look forward to the day I get to feel at ease, safe, and home within a butches' arms. To be a part of a shared love, intimacy and company. To run my fingers through hair, from the shortest buzzcut to the longest flowing down a butches' back. To brush the palm of my hand through strong shoulders and comfortable arms. To feel my hands held tenderly and protected by sturdy, powerful, calloused butch hands. To fix the collar to a button up shirt or suit jacket, and run my hand softly down your chest smoothing any creases gently and with tremendous care. My gaze filled with love and admiration for you. I love that butch lesbians exist and fit so perfectly to the femme counterpart. I love our history and how we heal each other from the horrors we have endured and proven to overcome. I love the persistence and firey determination of our love. I love the comfort and serenity we bring each other. I love that we compliment and complete each other. I love that a femme doesn't have to be dating a butch lesbian to feel this connection, this power- it can extend from a romantic relationship and still stand true to a platonic friendship or mentor figure.

Butches, thank you. From the femmes, thank you for your strength. Thank you for your attention. Thank you for seeing us when no one else can. Thank you for your love and warmth and safety. Thank you, for being the security we can always fall back on, thank you for being our home.

Here’s to the lesbians who just realized yesterday, this morning, an hour ago.

Here’s to the lesbians who know, firmly and irrevocably, that they’re a lesbian.

Here’s to the lesbians who wonder five times a day.

Here’s to the lesbians that tick all of the boxes on what society thinks a lesbian “should” be.

Here’s to the lesbians who get incredulous responses and disbelief when they come out.

Here’s to the lesbians of colour, trans/nonbinary lesbians, fat lesbians, disabled/autistic lesbians, mentally ill lesbians, gnc lesbians, ace lesbians, aro lesbians, aroace lesbians, bi lesbians, pan lesbians, they/them lesbians, he/him lesbians, and so many more.

Here’s to the shy, quiet butch lesbians and the outspoken, outgoing femmes. 

Here’s to the lesbians that don’t feel they fit in either one. 

Critiquing femme lesbians’ conception of gender almost always comes from a place of ignorance about this. Especially nonbinary femmes’ relation to gender. How we choose to articulate our gender and how we choose to navigate the complex web of patriarchy, heteronormativity, and cisnormativity that constitutes gender is, honestly, nobodies business but ours!

So! Stop policing us, stop pretending you know better than us, and stop speaking over us!
