Did I buy Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection and beat it in only a few weeks? Yeah.

Adding that because 3 came out just earlier this year.

How to start. I enjoy that they kept the partner system from MHS2, and that this time those partners weren't just appearing and then disappearing, but interchangable at any point! I loved the addition of side stories, making the fellow partners have much more personality outside of their working with you. It really makes you feel more connected with the characters, and helps them grow on you. Like for instance, I wasn't the biggest fan of Gaul at first. He came off too coldly. But through his side stories, learning that he's really a caring person and had your character's best interests in mind really made me like him more. As for my favorite partner? Eleanor. Why? She's hot lol.

I'm glad they added in game achievements to give you goals to strive for. I mean, I do wish there was an achievement for getting every rideable monstie, but I'd say that completing the kinship skill gallery is close enough. Another thing that was fun was the cooking recipes. I much prefer the recipes compared to the prayer pot for getting benefits.

The story is honestly the best one yet. All the messages too throughout it, like how war is bad and benefits no one, or how we need to help save the environment. I was startled when they revealed Simon to still be alive considering they had just shown scenes where people definitely died before his "death." That's another thing too. There's lots of games that kind of skirt around people dying. And in MHS and MHS2, we see what, a combined 2 people die? Being Cheval's mother at the start of 1 and our grandpa Red in 2. I do enjoy that instead of being a newbie who just got their kinship stone, we're instead teaching a new rider (while also simultaneously getting the tutorials) how to do things.

The invasive monsters were an interesting but cool addition. I enjoyed the gimmick of having to sneak around them and learn how to make them retreat. The refights are...hard, to say the least, but I think the difficulty is fair considering many later game armors and weapons need the drops for max level. The feral monsters are...not as interesting, but still enjoyable. I do wish the final area bosses had been feral instead of just regular powerful monsters (or, elder dragons in the case of Canalta Timberlands and Seraphis), but it does make sense considering what we learn about feral monsters later on.

I'm glad that they added more elder dragons that aren't post game or exceptionally rare. Personally my favorite is Velkana. It's just very beautiful. I do wish more of them were rideable, but outside of Malzeno, Velkana, and Namielle, they're all pretty sizeable, so it makes sense they aren't.

I loved doing habitat restoration. Finding a good habitat for the monsters that could unlock new deviants was so much fun!!! It did get weird sometimes, like Sand Barioths being in Seraphis or throwing Glavenus into a forest with essentially a flying knife shooter and a big crab to make it more powerful (the Hellblade Glavenus deviant). It was plenty of fun. My only question...notes confirm that Rathians and Rathalos are the same species, just that Rathians are the females and Rathalos are the males. So then, how did the Rathians repopulate? And how did the Rathalos on Seraphis stay populated without Rathians? I guess we'll never know.

My biggest question about the game is...where are the Cephadrome? We see Cephalos in Tarkuan, but there isn't a single Cephadrome present anywhere. They aren't even an endangered species you get the egg of from an invasive monster den. They simply just...aren't there.

All in all, I had a ton of fun playing MHS3. I hope they continue making more, and I'll be happy to play them and share my thoughts then!!! I'd give it a 9/10, reason being that I do wish there were more than four regions, there were more new and returning monsters, more invasive monsters with new and old monsters locked behind beating them, and fuck Namielle. Genuinely. With as much malice as I can muster. FUCK NAMIELLE.

Ever since I completed MHS 1, I've been having a blast tearing through Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. Seeing so many returning characters and monsters alongside the new ones was cool.

It's interesting just how drastic the difference from 1 is. More customization, more environmental things like small harmless monsters crawling around the floor, and the almost completely overhauled battle system. I loved not being restricted to a singular weapon, but having 3 to choose from. And having battle partners was fun too, though fighting alongside hunters did make it a bit harder compared to with other riders considering it's one less ally. But overall the new battle system was great.

The story? Where to even begin. Starting off with a festival of celebration right into the strange happenings was definitely a bit better than the first game's beginning. The introduction of the big problem is honestly better in 2. Instead of learning the disaster in the beginning (the Black Blight), having to wait to find it out and only getting hints as to what's happening? Certainly a much better introduction. I do really like that instead of just fighting only wild monsters, they added villains that you had to take on as well, with seemingly unknown motives until the climax.

Speaking of the climax. Fuckin' hell that was wild. Instead of Ratha going crazy like in the first one, losing control because Zellard captured him? And not only that, but revealing that Oltura wasn't truly the worms, but a dragon-like monster who needed to consume Rathalos to gain it's true form? Pretty wild. And the final boss fight. Being hit down to 1HP after every cutscene was rather intense, but for fighting something with the power to destroy the world? Makes sense to go that route.

The ending was, of course, epic. The way they showed Kyle becoming less sheltered throughout the story, and by the end going as far as to risk himself by jumping off Ratha to fire the arrows was a great way to show that hunters and riders can really be friends if they just learn about each other. And of course, there was Navirou, being extremely useless this time I have no idea why they showed him changing forms briefly. Didn't really do anything like it did in 1.

One critique though is Ratha's design. After Lamure Desert he just looks like every other normal Rathalos. I wish they had kept his wings black and blue and purple, just to keep showing that he's different from other Rathalos. I mean, Ratha(MHS1) had a scar on his face differentiating him from other Rathalos. Guardian Ratha had several scars from likely old battles, and greying coloration from age. They could've let Razewing Ratha keep the wings.

I don't have as much to say about this one since it was my first playthrough, but I really had fun! I look forward to eventually playing 3, though I need the money for that first lol.

I first got the original on my 3DS, back when I was younger (maybe under 10? I don't quite remember). Today, however, I did something I never did back then.

I finally completed Monster Hunter Stories. I defeated Mekili Pietru, and the credits have rolled. I couldn't do it back then. I didn't have the skill or the patience and dropped the game after struggling too much.

But finally, today, I did what I couldn't back then, and finished the game. I'm proud of myself.

As for my thoughts? Despite its age, I think it holds up pretty well. A decent story, fun gameplay, infinite monstie parties you could have. My final party (mostly to have all field abilities) was Ratha (obviously), Velcro the Velocidrome (the first Monstie you get), Weaver the Nerscylla, Glave the Glavenus, Brick the Barroth, and Ivory the Ivory Lagiacrus.

So then, what's next? Well, I'm not quite ready to move on to Monster Hunter Stories 2. There's a whole post game in 1 I never experienced back then, and I can't wait to experience it now.
