This (a quote from my book The Anthropocene Reviewed) was my overall attitude to the world until I was about 24. But it is no longer the way I look at the world.

It turns out that there is pleasure in simply giving what you have, even if--as is generally the case--what you have proves insufficient.

All my books have so many shortcomings. I am constantly running up against the limits of my talents. In other ways, they are good. Whatever is good in them comes from my willingness to go deep and be honest even when it is hard.

When I think of my work, it is hard to think of anything but its insufficiency. And yet, it's valuable to give as much as I can, whenever I can--not to "fulfill my potential" or whatever, but because we are only here for a little while, and there is more meaning in possibly cringe but earnest effort than there is in the cold pleasure of ironic disdain.

Normally, people tend to get frustrated, even jokingly, if they miss out on something. This comment was on a song from 1974 and it made me smile quite much. Simply appreciative. Like a dessert after dinner.

I cant wait to become your wife later today when we go to the courthouse in san francisco. I cant wait to celebrate our love with all our friends and family afterwards in our town. I cant wait to dance with you and hold you close and read my vows to you, and make sure you know how much you mean to me, nearly 8 years later. Folks have got to understand that they probably aren't messed up by some Secret Big Trauma that they just can't remember; but rather by a million tiny microtraumas that they do mostly remember but don't even register as traumatic because nobody actually understood that these things would cause trauma, much less stack on each other over the years.

This is why psychologists have started taking more of an interest in CPTSD in the last 10-15 years. What most people know as PTSD is a response to a single, intensely traumatic event (or even a series of events). However, CPTSD (chronic post-traumatic stress disorder) is caused by living for years in a situation where your nervous system cannot catch a break. Even if nothing huge ever happened to you, you always had to be on guard for a thousand little things that could and did happen.

After years and years of this, your nervous system gets "stuck" in an activated threat response. It never really lets you rest, and if this started when you were a kid, you may not develop a lot of neural pathways that you should have, because your brain was too focused on keeping you safe to bother with little things like "genuine human connection" and "interpersonal attachment."

so now it’s like ‘the point of doing them is to get good at them’ and not ‘this is a thing humans do, the way birds sing and bees make hives’.
