CRIPPLE PUNK ZINE (+submission guidelines)
Reminder that weโre starting a zine called Cripple Punk Presents!
Our goal is to continue spreading radical disability acceptance to as many people as we can. We want to help raise disabled peopleโs self worth and self esteem, support disabled content creators, and create more spaces for disabled people to unapologetically be themselves. Every single disabled person deserves to feel empowered!
We are currently accepting submissions for the first issue, which will answer the question, โWhat is Cripple Punk?โ and what cripple punk means to different people. The first issue should cover topics central to the cripple punk movement, like fighting ableism, embracing diversity, becoming empowered, and rejecting the roles mainstream society expects you to fit into.
Examples of what weโre looking for include:
Any drawings, poetry, essays, comics, photography, etc. done by disabled people; specifically pieces that relate to the theme and the topics mentioned above.
Submissions reflecting what Cripple Punk means to you and the effect itโs had on your life or the lives of other disabled people
Perspectives on disabled experiences specific to your gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. that youโd like to share
Artwork reflecting your emotions or ideas about any of the aforementioned topics; a drawing representing your journey as a disabled person, perhaps, or a painting that reminds you that you have value
Pieces that give advice or share experiences regarding ableism. Maybe youโve had a lot of practice at shutting down strangers unwanted opinions, or maybe you try to live your life as a pointed rejection of the โgood cripple mythos.โ Perhaps you have a lot of thoughts about exactly why the capitalistic notion of โproductivity = valueโ is messed up. Anything like this!
Photography! Disabled bodies and disabled experiences are valuable even if theyโre not aesthetically pleasing, but sometimes they are aesthetically pleasing, and weโd like to explore that. If you like to take pictures showing off your mobility aids, fat, stretch marks, scars, IVs, etc. in a way that makes you feel empowered, feel free to send them to us!
Personal thoughts on the โpunkโ part of Cripple Punk, like for example, why itโs more than an aesthetic, why you can be punk without โdressing punk,โ or why you, personally, feel more empowered by the โpunk aestheticโ
Anything that you would like to share in the zine as a disabled person; these are just a few examples!
