Yes, I've almost made a cult of FedEx at my school. Don't worry about it. In case you couldn't tell by the cadence of my rambling alone, this is @squishmallow36.
Tag either this blog ( @fedex-week-2023 ) my main ( @squishmallow36 ) and/or #fedex week 2023 so I can see all of your creations! I can't wait to see them!
Also tbh I don't really know how to pick prompts for this thing. So. Sorry if they're a bit disappointing.

Fitz is walking with a purpose towards the door frame. He is walking, and walking, and walking with a purpose, and so when he stops with a purpose, it is rather abrupt.Ā
āGood morning.ā
Unleashing a string of near-unintelligible curses, Dex flails for the nearest thing he can throw, which is, frankly, stupid, because there are plenty of fragile looking prototype things there, he could just channel an intruders body, and any normal throw would pale in comparison to one with telekinesis.
Thankfully(?), he throws his circlet instead of an invention, chucking it directly at Fitzās chest. He catches it, of course, but heās a bit irked by the fact he had to.
āHow does it feel to have a higher title than me?ā Fitz jokes, only a tad bitterly. He was trying for easy, cool humor, but it probably didnāt come through, judging by the fleeting look of surprise on Dexās face.
āPretty great, actually.ā
Okay, Dexās smirk is fanning the flames of Fitzās jealousy. Among other things. Sublime.
āAnd people are . . . treating you well?ā
āWhen have they not,ā he deadpans.
āAh, um-ā
āFitz, please donāt take this the wrong way, but why are you asking questions you donāt want answers to? Seriously.ā
Flustered, Fitz clears his throat in a sad attempt for time to think of an appropriate answer.
āThatās not- I do want to know. It just happened to be, ah, a question I was using to ease conversation before I brought up the true subject.ā
āThe true subject, huh?ā
This is so stressful. Heās grinning and showing off his stupidly cute dimple, and heās making a significant amount of eye contact. Why canāt he just let Fitz warm up to the subject? Get used to the conversation? Heād had exactly one real, beyond surface-level conversation with Dex before, and it had been about him almost dying. He didnāt exactly have a foundation here.
āYes.ā
āCare to share, Wonderboy?ā
āYou donāt need a moment to wake up?ā
Dex shakes his head, smoothing out the crumpled blueprint that had been acting as a pillow. He gives Fitz a sleepy, half-lidded smile, which pretty much acts as a shot to the heart.
Ā āWill you show me around Mysterium? We could, um, check out the food stalls, and vendor carts, and get gifts for the midterms party?ā
āSo, go on errands together?ā
Together, yes. Errands? Not the most accurate description of what Fitz was getting at.
āMore like a date?ā
āStars, finally!ā
āFinally?ā
āIāve been dropping hints for weeks! Biana told me to just wait it out, because you're flirted with so often that you donāt take it seriously anymore, and it would eventually sink in.ā
āItās the Keefe effect,ā Fitz grumbles.Ā
āRight. This happens on one condition.ā
Fitz stiffens.Ā
āWe avoid Slurp and Burps, okay? We donāt need my dad or siblings scaring you away.ā
Cracking a smile, Fitz agrees.
His mind circled back to what Dex had said about dropping hints.

Once again, this was a thing for my creative writing class, but this one was actually supposed to be a fanfic, not just a barely-concealed fanfic like the other two. Essentially this is that one scene in Neverseen where Fitz and Dex become friends. Yes, I know it's been done before. I've done it before. This is the most hinged fanfic I could write and to be fair I wrote kotlp chapter 3 like two years ago and this is from Fitz's pov. It's completely different
Ā Ā Ā Ā āCan Iā¦umā¦talk to you for a sec?ā Dex asks, his voice sharper and brighter than it has any right to be, ripping a spiraling Fitz out of his daze.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā For Physic to admit so plainly that he just nearly died thatāsāthatās terrifying.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Sophie might go through that on a far too regular basis, but for Fitz to get that close to his own demise makes him feel things heās never felt before. Itās a kind of fear and a lack of control heās never had before, even while he was watching Sophie drag herself back from the edge of fading away.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Itās an even deeper affront to his being than that. Elves are supposed to have an indefinite life span; they arenāt built to process the concept of their own mortality.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āUhā¦sure,ā Fitz replies slowly, glancing up to find Dex studying the floor.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitzās Mom herds Keefe and Sophie out of the room, and Physic follows suit, her bejeweled half-mask glittering in the sterile lights as she goes. Keefe, ever insufferable, proclaims that heās going to be eavesdropping. Fitz throws a pillow at him for his impunity.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā It is very quickly made obvious that this was a bad decision as Fitzās chest screams with pain.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā The inky veins of arthropleura venom may have been drawn out of his skin, but he still has a long way to go before heās fully healed. Physicās scolding tells him as much.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā The look Physic gives Keefe as she warns him to not throw it back is unexpectedly familiar, but Fitz canāt quite figure out why. At least the pillow isnāt allowed to make a return. Keefe is sure to remember this, though. Fitz will regret it one day very soon.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex waits for several seconds, head turned to the door, watching for the slightest sign that Keefe might be making good on his promise. Eventually he gives in and turns his attention back to the floor, gaze occasionally flicking up at Fitz.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz smiles reassuringly, to no effect.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āIām so sorry,ā Dex whispers, voice ragged. Heās so quiet, Fitz wonders if Dex actually said anything or if his thoughts were just so loud that Fitzās Telepathy picked up on them.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā The next time Dex dares to look at Fitz, a tear streaks down Dexās cheek. He quickly swipes it away.
Ā Ā Ā Ā More than that, though, is the guilt etched into every single line, every single freckle.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Guilt is the most dangerous emotion an elf can have. Fitz has seen its effects. His fatherās mind broke from the weight of Prenticeās conviction.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā The ironic part is that Prenticeās sentence was to spend the rest of his indefinite lifespan with his mind broken for assisting the Black Swan and, now, Fitz, Biana, and their Mom have joined that exact same organization.Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā And, yes, Sophie was able to heal his Dad, but what if she couldnāt this time? What if Dex shattered and Fitz was the reason why?Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Iāve already had to go through losing someone because of Prenticeās exile. I canāt let it happen again.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āDex, listen to me.ā Fitz waits until Dexās eye contact lasts for a whole second. āI donāt blame you. I donāt blame you in the slightestāā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āIt was my gadget! Itās why youāre likeālike this!ā Dexās voice cracks as he gestures to the bed Fitz is going to be trapped in for the next week.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitzās hackles rise, meeting Dexās anger head on. Anger is a safe emotion, at least until he starts saying things heās going to regret. But he doesnāt care if he regrets what heās saying so long as Dex understands.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āCorrect me if Iām wrong, but last I checked, you arenāt a Charger. So unless youāve suddenly manifested another ability and then didnāt spend a week proclaiming it to anyone who would listen, that was not your fault.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dexās voice takes on a dark edge. āZarina wouldnāt have been able to do this.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā Memories of Councillor Zarina, lightning crackling in her palms and the faint whiff of ozone it caused as the air electrified, rush through Fitzās mind. āShe wouldāve happily electrocuted any one of us if she thought it was the right thing to do.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āSince when has the Council acted upon āthe right thing?āāĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitzās mouth opens to argue that the Council isnāt malicious, just overly cautious with a tendency to cover up every possible controversy, no matter how small, but he thinks better of it. The memories of Sophieās Ability Restriction surface, too fresh in both of their minds to ignore.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex probably blames himself for that, too. But that isnāt his fault, either. He set out to build an Ability Enhancer. It was the Council that twisted it into what it became. He was just following orders to not get his family banished.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āSince when have you not blamed them for every inconvenience youāve ever experienced?ā Fitz smiles amusedly, a recent event coming to the forefront of his mind. āI think one day I heard you probably working on your gadgets around five in the morning cursing them out. I donāt think they gave you that paper cut.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā āOkay, most importantly, why were you awake that early? And how could you hear me? We are quite literally in separate treehouses. And, also, it was a splinter, not a paper cut, thank you very much.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āIām surprised Biana hasnāt told you about the horror stories of living with me. Iām apparently whatās called a āmorning personā and I should be placed in the Sanctuary to prevent the extinction of my species because itās critically endangered.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dexās smile widens, becoming more sincere. He looks like he almost wants to laugh, but his lips stay pressed together. Thatās when Fitz makes it his personal mission to make Dex laugh before heās allowed to leave this room, even if humor as a coping mechanism is Keefeās specialty.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitzās grand plans are suddenly impeded by a coughing fit, every muscle in his chest protesting with every single movement. A metallic taste tinges the back of his tongue and the skin of his chest feels impossibly tight. Between coughs, he can see the guilt flashing across Dexās face, and it makes his chest ache in more ways than one.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz doesnāt even get the chance to catch his breath before Dex begins a rambling apology. āIām sorry I did this to you, and Iām sorry about the Ability Restrictor, and I know it wasnāt used on you but Iām still sorry about how it turned out, and Iām sorry for that day you came to the store and I acted like a buffoon, and Iām sorry forāā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz interrupts him before he can work himself into even more of a mess. āHow many times do I have to tell you that I donāt blame you for what happened with the arthropleura?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āBut you should.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā āThere was absolutely no malicious intent behind anything that went down. You need to stop blaming yourself.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex shakes his head. āIntent doesnāt absolve me of responsibility.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āFine, then. Why donāt you blame the Council? You can do that. Itās very easy to get pissed at Councillor Zarina for short circuiting your gadget. Itās even easier to blame Councillor Clarette for calling the arthropleura there in the first place. Whoās to say no one wouldāve gotten hurt if your mini smoke machine gadget thing hadnāt decided to be extra explosive?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex looksā¦thoroughly unconvinced.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āOr, if you want to think about it this way, I share responsibility too. If I hadnāt thrown your gadget down the hallway, things couldāve gone very differently. Worse differently, but still differently. You can blame me for everything, youāve done it before.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex has returned to studying the floor, the uneven lines of light gray grout separating the slightly darker gray tiles. Itās the only room Fitz has seen in the entirety of Alluveterre that doesnāt feel like itās a treehouse. Itās empty, cold, and smells faintly of hand sanitizer. āI used to hate you, you know,ā he whispers.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā His inflection on the word āhateā seems to imply that those feelings might not entirely be in the past, but they certainly arenāt what they used to be. He wouldnāt be getting this worked up if someone elseālike Stinaāwas the one impaled by the antennae of an oversized millipede.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āYeah, I do,ā Fitz replies simply, not breaking eye contact.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āAnd that doesnāt bother you?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āI mean, I donāt entirely understand what I did to merit that kind of response, but, like, youāve been more than willing to tolerate me in recent months. Why should I let that bother me? The past is in the past and itās not like itās going to reemerge.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex turns away from Fitz, now studying the window that looks out onto the treehouses that make up Alluveterre.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz canāt really see outside that well with the whole staying-horizontal thing, but Alluveterre itself has taken on a new atmosphere after going to Exile.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā It should feel more open, but theyāre both just as underground, just as claustrophobic.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā The feeling of being trapped in that place, struggling for every breath as the venom coursed through his veins, is going to haunt him for a long time.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Maybe thatās the real Vacker legacyā¦nearly dying in the middle of Exile going to visit Prentice.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā The surrounding circumstances around the visit couldnāt be much more different. His Dad went down there with Sophie to break Fintanās mind. He went there to break Prentice out.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā So much has changed in so few months, thereās no saying where it might go here. All Fitz knows is that Dex is an incredibly skilled Technopath and that he would rather have Dex on his side than against him.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex has the capacity to be scary when he wants to be, but he can also be incredibly stuck in his own head, like right now, as he continues to stare out the window.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āWhat if the past does reemerge?ā he whispers.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz looks at him, but he doesnāt turn to make eye contact. āNothing is going to be a linear process. If you end up deciding that your initial opinion of me was correct, I might get a little mad. Thatās just how I react to things sometimes. And I also have an intense desire to be liked by everyoneāholy Exile, what was in those painkillers?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dexās response is almost automatic. āIt was actually the Oremideae leaves. I think your Great-times-a-gadjillion-uncle-cousin-whatever discovered them. Theyāre really good at preventing infection, but they also inhibit a little bit of the blood-brain barrier, both physiologically and psychologically. I didnāt realize theyād kick in this quicklyā¦but, I mean, they were crushed...which would increase absorption rate. I can go if this is weird for you.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz can barely focus on the details of what Dex is saying. He goes off on alchemy-adjacent tangents quite often during the limited instances theyāve interacted and as much as Fitz wants to learn new things, thereās something so inherently distracting about Dex.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āYou donāt have to go. Just donāt get mad if and when I say something stupid.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āIām sure you wonāt say anything stupid.ā Dexās attention lands on Fitz once again, and he takes a few steps toward Fitzās bed-prison.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āYou never know. I am very untrustworthy in that regard.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex is only a large step away from the foot of Fitzās bed. He sighs. āI really am sorry for everything and a half.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āI thought you were supposed to be good at maths. Infinity plus half an infinity is still infinity. It wonāt change. Thereās no reason to operate on an infinitely large quantity.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dexās tone is flat as he says, āIt was hyperbole.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āOh.ā That would make a touch more sense. Iāll just blame it on my brain not functioning, thatās completely plausible.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex lowers himself onto the farthest corner of Fitzās bed. Itās way larger than the ones that Elwin has in the Healing Center at Foxfire, itās still really close compared to Dexās normal trend of staying as far away from Fitz as physically possible.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā But itās not a level of closeness thatās anything significant in any other case.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dexās words are low, almost to the point where Fitz thinks his filter has slipped to the point of accidentally reading Dexās thoughts, but it doesnāt have that familiar echoey quality and Dex is avoiding eye contact once again.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āI just want you to knowāreally knowāIām so sorry about what happened to you. Iād like to promise that itāll never happen again, but thatās just not something I can guarantee with any level of certainty. That terrifies me to no end, but I guess it just comes with being a Technopath. Hurting everyone around me is justā¦inevitable.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā āMaybe,ā Fitz concedes, ābut youāve also saved us so many times with your Panic Switches and even those first two gadgets today that didnāt malfunction. I donāt remember if you heard about me when my Dadās mind was broken, but, well, I was a bit of an absolute mess and I lashed out at Sophie. Maybe hurting everyone around me is just an inevitable part of my personality.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā They sit in silence together for a long moment.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz breaks the silence first. āI guess that means that we should be friends. Mutually assured destruction and all that.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āEven despite the fact that I used to hate you?āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā āYeah. A little animosity will keep things interesting. Itās an integral part of why Iāve tolerated Keefe for so long.āĀ Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Dexās laugh isnāt as light as it used to be, back when they didnāt know each other. Theyāve both been through so much, and thereās still so much unknown ahead of them in the future.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āāInterestingā is certainly an interesting word choice. But I guess Iāll try. Thatās the biggest commitment I can make. Donāt be mad when I start acting like a blockhead again.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz smiles, struggling to keep his chest muscles from throwing another fit, this time induced by laughter.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex has been subjected to the worst of the prejudice it can offer, heās still here fighting for change. He can be bitter at times, but itās well deserved. Justified, even. Acting like a blockhead would be the least of Fitzās concerns if he was in Dexās situation.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā The idea that the worst Dex could do is act like a blockhead is just so far outside of what he should be allowed, itās almost comical.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Or maybe itās those Oremideae leaves.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz is enveloped by a strong urge to give Dex a hug, but he canāt tell whether itās from pity, admiration, the realization that heās truly broken through Dexās shell for the first time, or something else he canāt quite describe.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā And thatās the same time that the playful grin drops from Dexās face.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āI should probably leave you to rest and heal. Let me know if thereās anything I can do or get you orāā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āActually, I do have one small request, if you donāt mind.āĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz immediately regrets saying that, but thereās nothing he owns thatās more important to the healing process.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āI donāt mind at all. What can I get you?ā Dexās face is lit up, even if he doesnāt want to show it, with the rush of being helpful. Itās the one thing Fitz remembers from that day at the storeāDexās absolute delight when he knows where something is.Ā
Ā Ā Ā āUnder my bed, thereās a stuffed dragon. He should be pretty obvious. Please try to keep him away from discovery by others.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āBy āothersā do you mean Biana or Keefe?ā Dex asks as he stands, leaving behind an empty, warm corner of the bed.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āYes,ā Fitz answers, realizing heās been smiling like a complete and total doofus long enough to make his face muscles hurt.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex is gone for a long minute before he returns, brandishing a ruby red dragon, its eyes and sparkles twinkling in the fluorescent lighting as its wings slowly flap from the movement.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Elwin may have given Mr. Snuggles to Fitz when Fitzās Dadās mind shattered, but itās hard to remember a time before it was in his life.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Fitz hadnāt noticed the emptiness settling into his chest after Dex left, but now that heās back, Fitz is filled with the kind of longing that doesnāt want him to leave again.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āThank you,ā Fitz mumbles as he squeezes Mr. Snuggles so hard it takes a few seconds to return to its original shape.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex smiles. āLike I said, let me know if you need anything.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āLikewise,ā Fitz replies. āAlthough my capabilities might be a touch more limited at the moment.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Well, thatās an understatement of the century.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Dex leaves without further comment, and Fitz settles himself down into his pillows, clutching Mr. Snuggles close to his chest, the familiar soft fabric a comfort to his otherwise aching muscles.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Heās almost drifted off into sleep when Keefe saunters into his room, apparently brought in by the power vacuum left in Dexās absence.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā And then his gaze lands on Mr. Snuggles sticking out from under the covers. The unrestrained joy as he wrestles Mr. Snuggles from Fitzās dazed grasp is refreshing to see after knowing thereās been so many weeks that Keefe has been in such a dismal state.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Less refreshing is him parading Mr. Snuggles around and yelling through the entirety of the tree houses of Alluveterre. āYou guys have to see this!ā

Summary:
They first met when Dex had just turned eighteen; the day he had first swum up high, to the land where humans resided, where their ships deserted to travel far and wide. His father had warned him of the dangers of being sighted by humans, so he had put in utmost care to come out at a time few humans would be awake.
He had almost immediately been sighted by a guy.

On Ao3 or below the cut!
This is another small thing from my creative writing class. For this one, we were given three objects and told to use the setup/payoff structure with it. I picked out the sunglasses, as one might be able to tell. Fitz doesn't exactly show up, but it was still Fedex-inspired so under Fedex week it goes.
Dex wakes up to find soft rays of sunshine glittering through his window. Normally he wouldnāt notice a thing like that but his brother has bribed him to go outside for the first time this summer.Ā
Lexās words, not his. Although theyāre probably fairly close to true so the distinction isnāt exactly necessary, but it is important because it makes Dex feel like he isnāt a recluse.Ā
It takes Dex longer to get out of his bed than heād like to admit due to the consequences of getting out of itānamely, the outside. While it hasnāt yet gotten hot out, if the fact itās the middle of July and the absolute lack of clouds is any indication, itās going to get there sooner or later.Ā
Thereās only a very slim chance that this adventure is going to end before Dex gets heatstroke, and even then, it may not be over. It may never be over.Ā
And so, he takes as much time to pack everything he could possibly need to live out in the woods for at least the next week, including the several gallons of sunscreen he needs to make sure he doesnāt become a lobster within the first quarter of a second.Ā
Dex sighs, looking around his room like heās never going to see it again to double check he hasnāt forgotten anything important.Ā
Well, other than his army of emotional support stuffed animals, but they wonāt exactly fit inside the backpack. Heās tried. It didnāt work.Ā
His gaze lands on Zoe, a hot pink unicorn who is very determined to not be wearing her sunglasses. He fixes it, then thinks better of it and slides them into his backpack.Ā
āAnd thatās what you get for taking them off every day,ā he mutters.Ā
Another five minutes is spent triple checking that he hasnāt left anything before he surrenders himself to his fate.Ā
His fate drags him outside by the wrist, barely letting him get his shoes on before threatening to dislocate his shoulder.
The outside is almost, but not quite, as unpleasant as it looks from the inside. Its abundance of bugs makes that a very easy distinction, but at least there are pretty trees, and the smell of ocean salt is growing heavier in the air with every turn they take and every trail they track.Ā
Slowly, there starts to be more signs of the impending ocean in the sand that Lex seems to be trying to kick into Dexās eyes.Ā
āBehold,ā Lex announces, gesturing wildly where the trees open up to reveal the glittering teal expanse in front of them.Ā
He looks very proud of himself, but the beads of sweat trickling down Dexās back are less than thrilled with this whole adventure.Ā
āYes, that is, in fact, an ocean. Good job.ā
Lex huffs and runs out onto the beach, kicking off his shoes at least ten paces before it was safe to do so, and he probably cut his feet on the rocks. Dex takes a much slower approach, preferring to avoid injury if he can help it.Ā
The sun is even more blinding when there arenāt any tree shadows to block it, plus it is getting reflected by the bright white sands.Ā
Okay, fine, theyāre more of a cream color but thatās still too bright.
Dex sets down his backpack, his spine popping in at least four different locations and several different directions.Ā
His fingers brush against something in the side pocket, smooth and not usually there. Itās kind of embarrassing he took this long to remember that he brought sunglasses with him on this odyssey.Ā
He slides them onto his face, the frames glimmering iridescently as the world darkens to an almost manageable level.Ā
But thenāno.Ā
Fish people donāt exist. Thatās not how this works.Ā
The seaglass lenses shimmer as Dex looks out over the ocean, revealing an entire world that definitely does not exist.Ā
This is fine. This is normal. Iām not losing my mind.Ā
ā¦The accuracy of those statements have yet to be evaluated.Ā
It isn't technically Fedex Week Day 5: FedEx trucks yet, but this seems like it might need a few days. I made a bingo scavenger hunt. You see a fedex truck that fits the box, you cross it off
https://bingobaker.com#65427748098858d2 <- if you want to make your own. Some of the squares are kind of questionable, so just use your judgement of what a weirdly shaped fedex truck is, okay? Not a semi and not a van but a secret third thing.

On Ao3 or below the cut!
I would thoroughly recommend reading this on Ao3 if possible. I originally wrote this as a screenplay for my creative writing class and, as such, tumblr nuked the formatting. Ao3 did as well, but less so.
That being said, it's kind of important to understand my larger concept. This is a script for a pilot episode of a TV show. Each episode is going to be featured around a song (and I was forced to write this one which is why it's bad) so at the end, it's a concept album. You will not be allowed to have the rest of the show. I refuse to write it.) This also takes place in 1925 so I've thrown some less than successful slang in there.
INT. EVERGLEN RECORDING STUDIO - MIDDAY - 1925
KEEFE leans over the antique Vernon family heirloom piano where FITZROY (FITZ) is playing. The intro credit music stops as FITZ looks up at him.Ā
FITZ sighs.Ā
FITZ
Let me guess. Youāve been thinking.
KEEFE gasps overdramatically.
KEEFEĀ
(feigned surprise)
Why ever would I do such a thing? YouĀ
know thinking can only lead to dangerous
outcomes. That being said, I did have a
thought.Ā
FITZ
Stars, why do I even bother anymore?Ā
KEEFE smiles annoyingly.Ā
KEEFE
Because Iām very difficult to get rid of.
(beat)Ā
I trust you know weāve been looking forĀ
a new venue since Tam dusted out on us.Ā
FITZĀ
And whose fault was that?Ā
KEEFE
Legally? Not mine.Ā
FITZ pinches the bridge of his nose. KEEFE is unbothered by this.Ā
KEEFE (CONTāD)
Anyway I was talking to Sophieā
FITZ
Anything that starts like that is certainĀ
to end badly.Ā
KEEFE
Fitzroy Avery Vacker, listen to me for aĀ
second for once in your life. Foster has aĀ
cousin whose family has a place we couldĀ
use. Itās not the most idealā
FITZĀ
(interrupting)
Then why are we even going to bother with
considering it?Ā
KEEFE
The back corner of a coffee shop isĀ
better than nothing. Not all of us areĀ
lucky enough to leech off your parents.
FITZ pauses for a moment, considering making KEEFE verbalize why, exactly, he cut off his relationship with his parents.Ā
FITZ
I take it that means youāve already booked
it.
KEEFE
Itās one gig. Do your best to tolerate it.Ā
KEEFE turns toward the back door. No one knows where he is going, probably including himself.Ā
FITZ
You know I wonāt.
KEEFE
And you know I donāt care.Ā
The door closes behind him and FITZ cracks his knuckles before going back to playing the piano.Ā
INT. SLURPS AND BURPS - LATE EVENING/NIGHT
Slurps and Burps is a coffee shop during the day and a Speakeasy at night. People mill about, the space filled with chatter.Ā
BIANA is sitting at the counter, swinging her feet as she talks to SOPHIE, drinking what is likely spiked coffee.Ā
DEXTER (DEX) and FITZ are getting everything set up for the performance this evening. FITZ is trying to be helpful. DEX is left moving the piano mostly by himself.Ā
DEX
(breathing heavy, teasing)
My guy, did you fill this thing with rocks?Ā
FITZ
(indignant)Ā
No. Itās just built to last.Ā
DEX
(proud of his pun)
Well, it could certainly last through meĀ
driving a car into it.Ā
FITZ
Why would you ever find yourself in thatĀ
situation?Ā
DEX shrugs.Ā
DEX
I donāt know.Ā
FITZ looks over at KEEFE, who is flirting with some random extra.Ā
DEX adjusts the piano into its final resting place.Ā
DEX
Can I get you anything? Java, tea, whatĀ
have you. Weāve got everything.
DEX lowers his voice.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)Ā
A little bit of moonshine? Itās a family
recipe.Ā
FITZ
(low, dangerous)
You know, itās probably not very goodĀ
business practice to disclose thatĀ
information to just anyone who walks inĀ
off the street. Somebodyās going to call
copper.Ā
DEX
(unconcerned, irritated)
You rat me out, youāre out of a job.Ā
FITZ snorts.Ā
FITZĀ
I didnāt want this gig in the first place.Ā
FITZ raises his voice.Ā
FITZ (CONTāD)
Isnāt that right, Keefe?Ā
KEEFE
I got no context, so whatever makes himĀ
look the most like a sap is the one IĀ
want.Ā
KEEFE spends the rest of the conversation watching them.Ā
DEX
(voice low)Ā
Then why are you here? Why did you evenĀ
bother?
FITZ leans against the piano, almost protectively, trying to make himself look relaxed. He is not. FITZ shrugs stiffly.Ā
FITZ
I had nothing better to do. Trust me. IĀ
tried. I really did.Ā
DEX
(maximum sarcasm)Ā
Wow, that must have been so difficult
for you.Ā
FITZ
Lay off it, alright? Iām here for Keefe,Ā
regardless of what you might want to think.
DEX
I want to believe youāre a sap, and youāre
not exactly giving me much evidence to the
contrary.Ā
DEX takes a sip out of some unspecified alcoholic beverage. This is a speakeasy, after all.Ā
FITZ
Oh, so youāve talked to me for what? Five
minutes? And now you think youāre anĀ
expert in my every waking thought? EveryĀ
detail of my inner psyche?Ā
DEX puts his hands up, defensive.Ā
DEX
I didnāt say that, Socrates. Watch yourĀ
tongue the text time you try to blowĀ
things out of proportion.
FITZ
Like that isnāt blowing things evenĀ
further out of proportion?Ā
DEX
If I remember correctlyāand pleaseĀ
correct me if I am wrong hereāyou were
the first to threaten me and my family,Ā
so I think thatās more than a fairĀ
trade from your perspective.
The lights flicker, signaling the start of the show. It is operated by DEXāS BROTHER #1.
DEX
Well.Ā
DEX presses his lips together.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)
(bitter)
I should tell you to have fun up there,Ā
but I donāt think youāre capable of
that. Break a leg and all thatĀ
superstitious nonsense.Ā
DEX shifts to his customer service voice, laced with passive aggression.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)
Let me know if I can get you anythingĀ
to make your time here slightly lessĀ
inconvenient.Ā
FITZ turns away without a reply or a second thought.Ā
EXT. - HAVENFIELD - MIDDAY, FALL
SOPHIE and DEX are sitting under a Jacaranda tree, leaves beginning to fall but not completely bare. They are complaining about many things. FITZ is a large topic of discussion on this fine day, and also KEEFE and BIANA to a lesser extent.Ā
DEX
How do you put up with all of them onĀ
a daily basis?Ā
SOPHIE
Determination, resilience, a lack ofĀ
other valid career paths, and a dashĀ
ofā
SOPHIE wiggles her eyebrows. It is unclear which one she is wiggling her eyebrows about, but that ambiguity will be important.Ā
DEX sighs.Ā
DEX
Okay, like, on the one hand, I get what
youāre saying and, yeah, youāreĀ
absolutely right.
SOPHIE laughs.Ā
SOPHIE
Thatās because Iām objectively correct.
DEX is too far in his own head to react to SOPHIEās comment.Ā
DEX
But, like, how can you reconcile thatĀ
with that personality? I donāt get it.
SOPHIEĀ
Thereās nothing to get. Admire from aĀ
distance and your problems solveĀ
themselves. Easy.Ā
DEX pauses to consider this answer.
DEX
No. I donāt like that solution. Give meĀ
a better one. Replace the personality
itself. You went to college. You have aĀ
fancy degree in marketing or something.Ā
Figure it out.Ā
SOPHIE
Okay, first of all, that was severalĀ
years ago and I havenāt used it since.Ā
DEXĀ
You have a photographic memory. DonātĀ
try to pull that on me.Ā
SOPHIE doesnāt know how to reply to this for a beat.Ā
SOPHIE
(feigned anger)
Damn. How dare you know all my tricks?Ā
Anyway, I donāt think personalityĀ
replacement was covered in my curriculum.Ā
Sorry. But do let me know if the storeĀ
needs new customers.Ā
DEX
Some might argue thereās already too many
people. That doesnāt excuse the fact that
youāre supposed to know the answers toĀ
life, the universe, and everything. This
has been thoroughly established.Ā
SOPHIE
Well, I donāt. Sorry.Ā
DEX pauses for a long time, somewhere in the realm of several whole seconds.Ā
DEX
I just wishā¦things would be easier.Ā
SOPHIE smiles softly, encouragingly.
SOPHIE
On which front?Ā
DEX laughs bitterly.Ā
DEX
Yes.Ā
DEX pauses, debating with himself if he should elaborate.
DEX (CONTāD)
(frequent pauses, struggling with sentences)
Itās just thatā¦Fitz isā¦tanglingĀ
everything together. I used to be able
to go to work without getting trappedĀ
in my own mind. And, well, to beĀ
completely honest, I donāt muchĀ
appreciate it.Ā
SOPHIE
You should go tell him that.Ā
DEX physically flinches away from this idea.Ā
DEX
I have an even better idea. How aboutĀ
you go tell your boyfriend Keefe?Ā
Heās the one that concocted this wholeĀ
booking-Slurps-and-Burps-for-a-gig
disaster. HeĀ should be the one to unravel
thisĀ Gordian knot of a situation.Ā
SOPHIE
Iām not dealing with your problems.Ā
You can talk to Fitz yourself or youĀ
can deal with it.Ā
DEX
(Making himself sound useless on purpose)
But, alas, Iām incapable of speakingĀ
with people in rational terms. Whatever
am I to do?Ā
SOPHIE
(not buying into DEXās act)
Donāt make me show you what irrational
terms sound like.Ā
DEX sighs, defeated. This is going to be unpleasant, but heās already concocting the bribery he is going to offer KEEFE to make him want to relocate. Preferably without destroying his and SOPHIEās relationship.Ā
DEX is also fairly easily convinced to do things he doesnāt want to do while also being immensely stubborn.Ā
DEX
Fine.Ā
EXT. RECORDING STUDIO - THE NEXT DAY, DAYLIGHT HOURSĀ
DEX walks up to the door and argues with himself in his mind before knocking.Ā
Inside, FITZ sighs and stops playing piano. As he stands, his joints sing the song of their people. Unlocking the door, he finds DEX studying the ground and fidgeting with his sleeve.Ā
FITZĀ
Hello! What can Iā
FITZ realizes who is standing in the doorway and drops the polite act.Ā
FITZ (CONTāD)
(flatly)
āWhat do you want?
DEX is irritated by this in an effort to not be thinking about how he is engaging in a conversation.Ā
DEX
Believe it or not, not everything isĀ
about you. Iām here to speak withĀ
Keefe.Ā Ā
FITZ considers this, leaning against the doorframe.Ā
FITZ
Nah, I donāt believe that one. Besides,Ā
Keefe isnāt here. I donāt know whereĀ
he is or when heāll be back. Sorry.Ā
DEX feels a rush of relief, taking a deep breath.Ā
DEX
Itās probably futile to ask you to tell
him that I was looking for him, but IāmĀ
going to hope anyway.Ā
DEX turns around to leave.Ā
FITZĀ
Youāre exactly right.Ā
DEX
You donāt have to sound so disappointed.Ā
BIANA (O.S.)
(yelling to be heard from across the studio)
Fitzroy! Stop being so obnoxious!Ā
BIANAās voice comes down from a yell to a normal speaking voice as the sentence goes on and she gets close enough to push FITZ out of the doorway and take his place.Ā
BIANA (CONTāD)
Iām sure Keefe will return sometimeĀ
soon.Ā
FITZ
(muttering)
Lies. Filth and lies.Ā
BIANAĀ
(to FITZ)
Heās going to get hungry sooner orĀ
later.Ā
FITZ seems to accept this, rolling his eyes and wandering back to his precious piano.
BIANA
(to DEX)
Can I get you anything? Fitz has an
obsession with baking and weāre
always trying to get rid of theĀ
aftermath.Ā
DEX smiles awkwardly as he shakes his head. BIANA turns to not be outdoors anymore and DEX follows her inside.Ā
DEX
I mean, if you want to sell them atĀ
Slurps and Burps, I could always
ask my parents.Ā
DEX shrugs.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)
Iām sure theyād agree, but Iād ratherĀ
present a possibility than a guarantee,Ā
you know.Ā
BIANA
You sound like him.
DEX and FITZ look equally offended by this and avoid eye contact at all costs.Ā
BIANA takes this opportunity to leave DEX and FITZ together for a length of time while she investigates this route.Ā
BIANAĀ
Well, Iāve got some extra time today,Ā
so I can go ask your parents myself.Ā
Donāt knock each other off while IāmĀ
gone, got it?Ā
FITZ and DEX watch her leave. This is the same door that KEEFE used in the first scene, not the front door.Ā
FITZ
(yelling after her)
How many times do I have to tell you to
stop meddling in my life?
FITZ huffs.Ā
DEX gets up to leave out of the front door that is still open.Ā
FITZ
(irritated and tired)
Where are you going now?Ā
DEX
ā¦Leaving?Ā
FITZ
Well, donāt. Biana is going to thinkĀ
Iāve planted you in the backyard or
under the floorboards.Ā
DEX releases an exasperated sigh and sits down on a conveniently placed stool.Ā
FITZ (CONTāD)
Believe me, I wouldnāt say that unlessĀ
it was absolutely necessary.Ā
DEX
(his temper finally snaps)
What is your problem, dude? Youāve beenĀ
nothing but rude during the ten minutes
weāve interacted. I understand if you
donāt like me. Thatās understandable.Ā
But youāre like this toward everyone. IĀ
can also understand you didnāt want toĀ
do the gig for whatever reason, butĀ
instead of being like that about it, you
couldāve figured out a way to sit inĀ
time out until the last minute. Itās notĀ
that hard. Thereās a very nice storage
closet where Iāve spent more hours thanĀ
Iād like to admit hiding from people.
FITZās hands drop forcefully into his lap.Ā
FITZ
(equally angry)
Why should I explain myself to you? IĀ
couldnāt care less about what youĀ
think. I donāt know why you think IĀ
would.Ā
DEX
Oh, I donāt know, basic human decency?
I really donāt care if you disagree,
but I tried my best to be pleasant,Ā
and you made that very, very difficult.Ā
FITZ
That seems like a you problem.Ā
DEX
Well, Iām sorry you couldnāt tolerate
a single evening that wasnāt preciselyĀ
what you wanted to do. That must haveĀ
been so hard for you. Itās almost likeĀ
Iām not trapped in that coffee shopĀ
every single day.Ā
FITZ
Again, that seems like a you problem.Ā
I donāt see why I should be concernedĀ
with a you problem.Ā
DEX
And I donāt see why I have to put upĀ
with yourā
DEX gestures vaguely at FITZ, unable or unwilling to say what heās thinking.Ā
FITZ
(challenging)
My what?
DEX
Your general existence. I donāt want toĀ
be here as much as you donāt want me to
be here. I would adore being able toĀ
leave you alone, but it looks likeĀ
neither of us are going to get what we
want.Ā
FITZ
So youāve made it your personal mission
to make yourself as infuriating asĀ
possible in the meantime?Ā
DEX
I guess so. You didnāt exactly make it
difficult for me.Ā
The sound of the back door opening stops FITZ from responding. KEEFE enters, mild surprise at seeing DEX but he also doesnāt care that much.Ā
KEEFE
Did you miss me?Ā
FITZ and DEX
(in approximate unison)Ā
No.Ā
FITZ and DEX look at each otherāthis is a pretty significant milestone in them agreeing on something. They laugh.Ā
INT. SLURPS AND BURPS - MIDMORNING
FITZ enters, the doorbell announcing his presence. He makes eye contact with DEXāS SISTER at the counter.Ā
DEXāS SISTER
Dex! Your friend is here!
DEX appears from the back, expecting SOPHIE or maybe even KEEFE. He has severe dark circles and is immediately irritated by FITZās presence.Ā
DEXāS SISTER trades places with him, though she will be listening to their whole conversation.Ā
DEX
What do you want this time?Ā
FITZ
I do believe youāre a tea shop whenĀ
youāre not running from the police, and,Ā
as such, Iād like a small Earl Grey.
DEX gives him a look. The kind of staredown that requires invocation of the if-looks-could-kill meter.Ā
DEX takes some of the hot water from the coffee and unwraps a teabag, allowing it to start steeping.Ā
DEX
And you had to come here for that?Ā
FITZ
Youāve got the best tea in the shortest
distance from my apartment.Ā
DEX
You can make tea yourself, you know.Ā
FITZ
Yes, but, you see, then I have toĀ
Interact with Keefe. In that case,Ā
the amount I would spend in bribery isĀ
significantly greater than venturingĀ
out into the world.Ā
DEX
I can almost see that.
DEX hands FITZ the scalding mug of tea. FITZ touches it and flinches away.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)
Can I get anything else for you today?
FITZ
If you have a least favorite muffin,Ā
Iāll take one of those.Ā
DEX studies the muffins for a long second before choosing a victim. It is placed into a white paper bag that is slightly too small for both his hand and a muffin.Ā
DEX
Thatāll be $1.05
FITZ takes out his wallet and slides over a $20. For reference, this is roughly $350 when adjusted for inflation. That is also why the price of a tea and muffin is scaled the way it is.Ā
DEXās eyebrows react appropriately to the amount of money this is.Ā
DEX
(projecting calmness and irritation)
Singlehandedly paying for a weekās rent
isnāt going to make me like you.Ā
FITZ
Okay. Thatās not going to stop me. Just
think of it like a starting point. AĀ
deposit in exchange for dealing with me
and myā
FITZ gestures vaguely at himself.Ā
DEX
Iām never going to live that one down,Ā
am I?Ā
FITZ
(almost, but not quite, playful)
Not if I have anything to do with it.Ā
DEX
Lovely.Ā
FITZ
Careful, Iām willing and able to haveĀ
Keefe perpetuate it even further.Ā
DEX
I hope you know that my siblings haveĀ
already added it to their very limited
vocabulary, so thereās really no need.Ā
DEX realizes this may result in additional perpetuity because it sounded like he was trying to make FITZ stop and that means he could take it as a challenge.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)
Although, I guess there is a constant
need to make me suffer as much asĀ
possible, so itās really up to your
discretion.Ā
FITZ takes the tea, no longer giving him fourth degree burns, and his muffin.Ā
FITZ
Would you care to dine with me onĀ
this fine morning?Ā
DEX makes sure there arenāt too many customers, in case he would be needed to work. There are not. Most of their income comes in after sunset.Ā
DEX
(loud so his siblings can hear)
Yes, I would like to get paid to not
work.Ā
FITZ flashes a small smile that DEX does not see.
FITZ and DEX sit at a booth in the corner for minimum visibility. There arenāt many other people and if they get into another argument, they donāt want to be public entertainment.Ā
DEX
It really is remarkable how determinedĀ
you are to both piss me off and remain
a patron here.Ā
FITZ
Well, Iām sure you could solve theĀ
latter fairly quickly.Ā
DEX gestures widely to the doorway to the kitchen, where his siblings are trying to not be caught eavesdropping.Ā
DEX
Behold. The reasons I am physicallyĀ
incapable of kicking you out. I do that,Ā
Iām never going to hear the end of it,
and thatāll get out to the rest of our
customersābecause of course it willāand
then suddenly they start going down the
street for their mediocre morning coffee.Ā
FITZ
Well, Iām not a coffee person, so I canāt
review yours, but your Earl Grey is quite
nice.Ā
DEX lowers his voice conspiratorially.Ā
DEX
Itās even nicer with a little splash ofĀ
something. If you get what I mean.Ā
FITZ
(voice low to match)
Itās not even noon yet.Ā
DEX
Then come back later. Time usuallyĀ
travels linearly in the forwardĀ
direction, and then itāll be after noon
and youāll have to come up with a new
excuse. If that new excuse just soĀ
happens to be that itās not fiveĀ
oāclock yet, wait until I tell you aboutĀ
what else time can do. It can travel
linearly. In the forward direction.Ā
DEXāS BROTHER #2 (O.S.)
And we donāt have a band tonight so then
maybe youāll perform and Dex will beā
DEX turns and points at him.Ā
DEX
Donāt finish that sentence if you donātĀ
want lead poisoning.Ā
FITZ smiles.Ā
FITZ
Allegedly.Ā
DEX
Allegedly.Ā
DEX turns back to FITZ.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)
You donāt have to if you donāt want to.Ā
FITZ
And that sounds like youāre trying to get
rid of me. Iāll see you tonight then.Ā
FITZ brightens his smile and leaves. DEX doesnāt take any opportunity to argue with him, despite the fact that he has more than enough time to react.Ā
When the door shuts, DEX releases a big sigh, deflating.Ā
INT. SLURPS AND BURPS - AROUND SUNDOWN
Slurps and Burps is once again filled with many patrons, and they are once again filling the room with chatter. The piano is already in place, as are BIANAās saxophone and KEEFEās drum kit.Ā Ā
FITZ
(at KEEFE)
Stop looking at me like that.Ā
KEEFE
(feigned oblivious innocence)
Like what?Ā
FITZ
You know what youāre doing. Being allĀ
self-righteous.Ā
KEEFE
I donāt know what youāre talking about.Ā
FITZ cycles through a few arguments before deciding it isnāt worth it.Ā
FITZ
Forget it. We donāt have time to argueĀ
about this. Now, if youāll excuse me, IĀ
do have a small change to the setlist.Ā
KEEFE
Shouldnāt that have been discussedĀ
previously?Ā
FITZ
Itās not like you would care either way.
Whatās it you tell me? Fitzroy, itāsĀ
jazz, nobody cares about the setlist.Ā
Half of it is already improv.Ā
KEEFE
That might be accurate, but that doesnāt
mean I like it.Ā
FITZ turns away, grumbling to himself and searching the crowd for DEX.Ā
When he does eventually find him, FITZ smiles hesitantly.Ā
FITZ
So this might be an odd request, butĀ
please hear me out before you say no.Ā
DEX
(already irritated)
Go ahead.Ā
FITZ
(quickly, in a single breath)
I may or may not have a tendency toĀ
process things by writing songs, whichĀ
Iām sure is a massive surpriseĀ
considering why Iām here. I donātĀ
remember exactly why I was talking toĀ
Sophie a couple of days ago, but thatāsĀ
beside the point. Anyway, I happened toĀ
be blessed with the songwriting curseĀ
immediately after she left, and when IĀ
emerged from the cave, the songās point
of view was a little wonky. And by thatĀ
I mean, of course, that I tried toĀ
project into your head, which is reallyĀ
weird now that Iām saying it out loud.Ā
DEX
Calm down. I donāt need you passing out
on me. I donāt want to call Elwin. Heās
already mad at Sophie. I donāt need that.Ā
FITZ takes a deep, slightly shaky breath.Ā
FITZ
On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely would
it be that I could ask you really,Ā
really nicely to do the verse thatāsĀ
attempting, probably very badly, toĀ
be in your point of view so that IĀ
donāt have to ask Keefe to do it?Ā
DEX
About a -7, presuming itās a logarithmic
scale, but Iāll do it anyway.Ā
A pause.Ā
FITZ
Why?Ā
DEX
Donāt question my motives. Just beĀ
aware that I donāt know what Iām doing
and if I think about it too long, IāmĀ
going to go cry in the bathroom, soĀ
donāt let me think.Ā
FITZ
Got it.Ā
A longer pause, FITZ contemplates telling DEX something to help with the fact that his blood pressure is visibly rising.Ā
BIANA (O.S.)
Fitz! Itās nine. Get going.Ā
FITZ
(yelling over to BIANA)
Who is this punctual person and whatĀ
have you done to my sister?
FITZ turns back to DEX and pulls a crunched piece of paper out of his pocket.Ā
FITZ (CONTāD)Ā
Hereās the lyrics. I didnāt have time toĀ
formalize any sheet music, but just kindĀ
ofā¦vibe with the music. Thatās kind ofĀ
this whole genreās mission statement,Ā
isnāt it?Ā
DEX
I am regretting my life choices.Ā
FITZ
Iām sorry to hear that. Youāll be fine,Ā
though. If not, Iāll bribe everyone with
muffins until the complaints stop.Ā
DEX
(physically shaking)
Okay.Ā
FITZ takes his place at the piano, making eye contact with KEEFE.Ā
FITZ
Trust me, okay?
KEEFE smirks.Ā
KEEFE
Yeah, of course. Iād let you lead us off
a cliff.Ā
FITZ
A wouldnāt expect anything less.Ā
FITZ begins playing an introduction, underscored by low rumblings from KEEFEās floor tom after the first bar. FITZās focus remains squarely on KEEFE.Ā Ā
FITZ (CONTāD)
(singing)Ā
HE LEANED OVER THE PIANO
WITH THAT MISCHIEVOUS GLINT IN HIS EYE.Ā
HEāS BEEN THINKING ABOUT SOMETHING
AND NOW THEREāS NO GOING BACK.Ā
The tempo ticks upward as KEEFEās drums develop into a polyrhythm. FITZ leans back, his gaze landing on the ceiling.Ā
FITZ (CONTāD)
THE WORLD IS ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD
IāM HANGING ON TO WHAT IāVE ALWAYS KNOWN
WHAT IāVE KNOWN HAS GOTTEN ME THIS FAR
WHY BOTHER CHANGING THAT?
FITZ finally looks at DEX, his irritation over the past few days on full display in his tone. The instrumentation drops out for a beat.Ā
FITZ (CONTāD)
WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO DIFFICULT WITH ME?
WHY DO YOU FIND SUCH PLEASURE ANGERING ME?
IF I COULD LEAVE, I PROMISE I WOULD,Ā
BUT I DONāT HAVE A WAY TO ESCAPE.Ā
I DONāT HAVE A WAY TO RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLACE
AND SO IāLL KEEP ON OCCUPYING YOUR SPACE.Ā
DEXās voice is so soft even the people standing next to him probably cannot hear him. Heās staring firmly at the ground. Itās not exactly symmetrical in the vocals or instrumentation with the first verse, but thereās no need for it to be.Ā
DEXĀ
(singing)Ā
SHEāS ALWAYS MY WORST INFLUENCE
BY PUSHING ME OUTSIDE MY COMFORT ZONE.Ā
IF ONLY SHE WOULD UNDERSTAND
I WANT TO FIND AN ESCAPE.Ā
DEX gains a bit more confidence, staring at FITZās shoes and singing slightly louder.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)
THE WORLD IS ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD,Ā
IāM STILL RUNNING FROM WHAT IāVE ALWAYS KNOWN.Ā
WHAT IāVE KNOWN HAS GOTTEN ME THIS FAR
WHAT MORE CAN LIE AHEAD?Ā
DEX fixes a death glare on FITZ.Ā
DEX (CONTāD)
WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO DIFFICULT WITH ME?Ā
WHY DO YOU FIND SUCH PLEASURE ANGERING ME?
IF I COULD LEAVE, I PROMISE I WOULD,Ā
BUT I DONāT HAVE A WAY TO ESCAPE
I DONāT HAVE A WAY TO RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLACE
AND SO IāLL KEEP ON OCCUPYING YOUR SPACE.Ā
Two bars of SILENCE echo through the room.Ā
FITZ and DEXĀ
(start softly, crescendoing)
IF I STAY HERE AND YOU STAY THERE
IāLL STOP STEPPING ON YOUR TOESĀ
IF WE PRETEND LIKE NONE OF US CARE
MAYBE ITāLL COME TRUE.Ā
THAT DOESNāT MEAN THAT IāLL EVER LIKE YOU
AND YOU DONāT HAVE TO LIKE ME.Ā
PACIFY THE ELDER GODSĀ
AND THEN WEāLL BOTH BEāFREE.Ā
There is a long break, filled with instrumentation. BIANA and her saxophone have a whole narrative arc. DEX goes and runs off into the back, trying to never be seen again.Ā

I'm kind of tempted to just post the screenplay as it currently exists in my google drive. The formatting might be horrific but the only thing I'd have to do is change the names back.
