Your Biggest Fan - A Stalker/Predator's Ballad to His Victim WTF?! π± (Lyric Breakdown)
This song is about TRAUMA & ABUSE.
NGL, sonically, I'm not the biggest fan (lol) of the song as something I'd prefer to listen to (I DO like the 2nd half though, when it sounds less...country-ish? IDK, glam rock's not at all in my wheelhouse). But conceptually, this song is incredibly heartbreaking, within the CONTEXT of what one would know about book!Lestat called "The Wolfkiller" by his Maker, Magnus. π
Yeah, that ghoulish vampire's definitely gonna "take" (ie: Lat. rapere, "to rape, take, snatch") his prey out into the night--thru Lestat's frikkin bedroom window. "Real potential" as your frikkin fledgling.
I've talked about this before, how Magnus plied Lestat with a metric tonne of booze so he was too weak & discombobulated to fight back. And how alcoholism & substance abuse & molestation & hedonism all get intertwined as a complicated metaphor for vampirism.
And Magnus forcing an orgasm out of Lestat through The Swoon/the bite/penetration--vampirism as a metaphor for rape. Only on AMC vampires can actually bang, unlike in the books where it was ALL about the fangs; so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a LITERAL "crescendo", not metaphorical. π
"The spell is breaking" so Magnus DID Mind/Spell Gift Lestat, I always wondered about that.
"I know I'm hard to look at sometimes." See, this is why I don't like AMC's version of Magnus. I'd've preferred they kept him as the elderly hunchbacked no-teeth pale sickly Nosferatu-looking GHOUL he was in the books.
Like yeah, he's still creepy, but I always imagined him MUCH worse. π€’ Especially since it helped to further explain why book!Magnus was so disappointed with his own vampirism, thinking it was the magical cure that would make him beautiful (so people wouldn't run when they saw him coming; why he holed himself up in his Tower for ~400yrs); why he went to such drastic measures to first kidnap Eggs Benedict to steal his vampire blood when Rhoshamandes refused to Turn him (breaking the Great Law about not turning cripples, the elderly, ugly people, etc)--
--and then kidnapped allllll those pretty blonde boys he wanted to Turn, to live vicariously thru them ("You're everything I'm not").
So yeah, AMC!Magnus is creepy, but he doesn't look like a Monsterβ’. So I wonder if this is more of Rolin Jones' psychological horror rather than physical/body horror; where Magnus' monstrosity is solely reflected in his behavior (actions, mannerisms, logic or the lack thereof, etc), not his outward appearance? π€
And there is is. βοΈπ
Instead of Magnus' vampirism being the alchemy to turn something ugly (himself) into something beautiful (Lestat), instead he bastardized Lestat's entire existence by turning something beautiful (Nicki's affectionate nickname for Lestat as "Wolfkiller") into something ugly (a vampire).
This is reminding ME of every rapist kidnapping stalker; this is terrible.
"All the desperate desires of your life," yeah, cuz Magnus called Lestat "my Lelio," too; cuz he stalked him while hew performed at Renaud's. Which is why I kept asking wtf AMC was doing swapping Armand and Magnus in 2x3, cuz it made no sense (x x); why they made Armand Lestat's stalker and not Magnus, but still mentioned him over & over.
"The fire" being Magnus' funeral pyre, when he killed himself after Turning Lestat. Burn, bish.
book!Magnus went out laughing, but is AMC!Magnus gonna go into the fire singing...like NICKI did? π
I already said that AMC/Sam Reid should get nominated for an Emmy or Grammy for the music, cuz this is insane. While the music's not to my taste at all, the effort they're putting in to create the songs is undeniable--esp. since Sam's the one doing all the singing; when that's not even what they auditioned him for. But he can actually sing, which is really amazing.
My main complaint still holds, though, that this is only a song with contextual meaning wrt vampirism if you KNOW what Lestat's talking about. It works as a narrative device/scaffolding for the SHOW, yes. But WITHIN the universe itself, how would any vampire listening to this know that Lestat's talking about Magnus (a vampire)? What makes this song any more deserving of the covens tryna kill him than Dancing with Myself or Butterscotch? π€¨ Again, Long Face is still the only one that's explicitly about vampires.
This song, on its own would NEVER register as being about anything more than toxic fandom/standom being obsessed with their blorbo to the point of stalking/kidnapping/rape/etc.
Only someone who knows that Lestat was called "Wolfkiller" would even put 2 & 2 together--and that term was NEVER used in S1 or S2 in Louis' book. On the meta level, yeah WE the fandom know, cuz we read the books and watched the interviews about Carol Cutshall designing the Wolfkiller Cloak, where we see Sam Reid call it that outright--but LESTAT (and any other character) never does.
I was really looking forward to hearing AMC's answer to The Legacy of Magnus -- thee Magnus song from the books. But even the title's not namedropping him directly.
So yeah, that's just my worry, that all of these songs are gonna stay vague, and be more of a meta commentary on the plight of the musician in general rather than focusing solely on playing the book premise straight, that Lestat was directly calling out & goading the vampire covens to come to me by namedropping so many specific vampires that they wanted him to STFU about--not just TWMBK, even.
