Yeah! I think 118 might be my favorite episode (that I've seen so far).

Kazuha: Heiji's always talking about you [Kudo].

And while I'd love to know exactly what Heiji said to Kazuha about Shinichi, I think he was definitely gushing. Clearly a lot. He's really not shy about sharing his affection and admiration for the guy, which I can't help but find endlessly endearing. I particularly can't get over how, in his second appearance (Episodes 57-58), Heiji shows up to a Sherlock Holmes fan tour, despite not even being a fan, and blatantly states, out loud, utterly shamelessly, that his entire interest in being there is because he wants to see Shinichi:

Ran: You're a Holmes fan too?!

Heiji: Of course not! The reason I applied for this tour was 'cuz I thought I might find Kudo.

It strikes me as kind of refreshing, for this series. Characters in DetCo can be incredibly tsundere-like about the warm feelings they hold for other characters, but when it comes to Heiji's love for Shinichi, he's remarkably open. I don't think he ever hides his enthusiasm when they meet up, he's noticeably upset when they seemingly can't solve a case together (Episode 325), he sends Shinichi an "OK" composed entirely out of heart emojis when agreeing to put his life on the line for him (Episode 345), and though it is (probably) non-canon, the third film, The Last Wizard of the Century, also has Kazuha again reiterating that Heiji cannot shut up about this guy, noting that he was super hyped up about seeing Kudo:

Kazuha: You kept saying all morning that Kudo's coming, Kudo's coming.

And it's just really sweet to me. As amusing as I can find the tsundere moments, there's a lot to appreciate in Heiji's sincerity and unabashed fondness, too. It's nice to see men openly care for each other—to be proud of caring for each other! And that's undoubtedly Heiji, especially with how he grins and blushes and declares himself Shinichi's best friend (Episode 277 and 521, for a couple examples that I know of).

As far as I'm aware, I think it's really only Heiji's third appearance (Episodes 77-78) that he seems notably embarrassed about admitting how much he likes being with Shinichi to Shinichi's face; he treats it like a joke when he says that the real reason he wanted Kogoro and company there with him was because he "just wanted to see [Kudo]," when, c'mon, boy. You don't even like Sherlock Holmes but went on a Sherlock Holmes fan tour purely for the chance to see Shinichi. There's at least some truth in "just wanting to see" the guy.

(Which, as an aside, I am pretty miffed at FUNimation's English dub for changing the line from this...

Heiji: It's not like that! I just wanted to see ya [Kudo]!

Heiji: All right, I admit it. It's Rachel, Kudo. I had to see her. I'm in love with her.

(I'll defend the dub a lot, it's genuinely my preferred way to watch the show (with subtitles translating the Japanese script), but I think the problems here speak for themselves.)

I know, I know, we disregard the movies from canon because whacky timeline and whatnot. But the movies still happened and, from a sole movie perspective, have to fit somewhere into the timeline. Most logically, by their release; things that were only released afterward can hardly be referred to within it.

By the time The Last Wizard of the Century was released, Kaitou KID had only appeared in two cases - the Conan vs Kaitou KID episode about the Black Star heist and the Magic Lover’s Murder Case. KID’s next appearance in the DC canon timeline won’t be for another two years after that.

So that’s all the meetings that Conan and Kaitou KID had so far. The Black Star heist, a heist where KID clearly intended to steal a jewel and, for all that Shinichi is given, only didn’t keep because he got cornered by Shinichi. We, as the audience who also consumed the MK manga, know at that point already that KID is only after one specific gem and that he returns all jewels that aren’t Pandora - but, at this point in time, that is not a behavior Conan got to observe just yet.

And their second meeting was more by chance, when Kaito got involved in a murder plot and Shinichi solved the case. There was no stealing at all. Though there was a moment of proving his character, on Kaito’s part. The fact that he’d gone there, had worried about something he didn’t understand, and was filled with regret about a murder he couldn’t prevent.

Those two meetings, one heist that Conan got in the way of before Kaito could do his usual casual hand-off of the jewel and one murder investigation, are all they had between them before this movie.

And yet, at the end of movie three, Shinichi is out there, making claims like this with absolute certainty like there could not be a speck of doubt in his mind.

These were two Imperial Easter Eggs, which I would think are insanely valuable for the art and history to them even beyond the jewels that turned out fake.

KID hadn’t made a big show of his reveal that the egg belonged to this woman, he hadn’t pushed the police’s nose into “no look this is where the real crime is happening. do something about that”. His involvement with the case had been rather subtle (considering how very obvious his actions can be when he uncovers a wrong-doing; see, the Clock Tower heist) and could have still left his actions open to interpretation.

The fact that Shinichi, a detective who only met and interacted with this thief two times now and has only seen his modus operandi once so far, proclaims without a doubt in his mind that KID has known all of this beforehand and had set this heist up solely to give this woman her family heirloom back, is just… a lot, for me.

And there is this one scene in the beginning of the movie where they talk about KID's crimes, so I was like OwO? lets see what all crimes KID has actually committed

hmm only 134 crimes? Impressive but I kinda expected it to be more, if I'm honest. But I guess since he gives the jewels back its kinda expected.

Okay so there are 12 countries who think that KID is some sort of menace which is legit amazing but I still don't think that it deserves that big of a man hunt for just one person to be honest.

THEN! Then they throw this at me
