i am autistic, and my special interest is kotlc. i've had this special interest for almost 7 years now, and it's all i talk about. my favorite character is lord cassius (my glorious twink) and i've been hyperfixated on him for about 5 years now. i'm chronically ill (GERD, endometriosis, suspected POTS and hEDS) and have multiple other undiagnosed issues.

heads-up: i draw suggestive art every now and then. i always label those pieces appropriately!

i have a few different theories about his backstory, they vary quite a bit but they follow the same general progression

my main and probably most solid theory is that he grew up in a household very similar to keefe’s. emotionally and verbally abusive parents, probably neglected, shut down constantly. he had a keen interest in art, but was humiliated by his peers for it, and shamed by his parents for it. because of the way he was treated by the people around him (along with the bullying he experienced at school), he decided to give up the things he enjoyed and focused solely on fitting into the high standards of his family and rising up among the ranks of his peers in terms of academic excellence to prove that he was worth something. over time, he developed npd (due to his upbringing) and the smart, disciplined version of himself that he presented to the world became the way he thought of himself. in reality, he was incredibly insecure, which i think is true for many people with npd. unfortunately, nobody liked either versions of him. he got his first list of matches after completing the elite levels at foxfire and becoming an emissary, and his first match was gisela (in either exile or everblaze, keefe states that cassius and gisela were a “perfect match”, which can be taken either literally or figuratively. in this case, i’m taking it literally). however, she approached him first in order to initiate her emotional manipulation tactics earlier on. if you’ve ever watched moral orel, the way i think gisela manipulated cassius is very similar to how bloberta convinced clay to marry her. gisela essentially convinced cassius very early on that he needed her in his life, that he needed her to take care of him and help him. she was able to get him attached to her. he had actually liked her from the start, but because of the way she messed with his mind, the love he felt for her was a mix of genuine romantic love and an unhealthy emotional attachment. aside from his relationship with her, the whole thing about cassius trying to “protect” keefe by discouraging him from being an artist was him trying to prevent keefe from experiencing what he had experienced as a child. he had good intentions, but he ended up only hurting keefe. this is the one i have the most evidence for. it makes the most sense for just about everything we know, and knowing the way shannon has very much enjoyed making lord cassius an increasingly tragic character (and also because all my previous insane theories about lord cassius were correct), i wouldn’t be surprised if this were canon, or close to canon at the least.

my second theory is a bit different. he grew up in a normal household with normal parents who treated him pretty well. the thing that made his personality shift was the bullying at school. that was what motivated him to prove himself. he cut his parents off later on because he believed they would slow him down. there’s no solid evidence to support anything about him cutting his family off, mainly because the rest of his family isn’t mentioned ever (except for when he references keefe’s middle name coming from one of his great-great-great-great etc parents in unraveled), but because they aren’t mentioned, i think we can make a pretty safe assumption that he doesn’t talk to them or isn’t in contact with them. that goes for the first theory too.

my third theory is basically the same as the first, but instead of being abused and neglected as a child, cassius was constantly praised and spoiled by his parents. this one doesn’t make sense for his personality or his behaviors, and there’s almost zero evidence for it, so i don’t really agree with it. it’s more of a thought i had than a solid concept.
