Today is March 19th, which means it's McGoohan Day.
I had to choose between quoting song lyrics in the most embarrassing way possible and get six notes from my kind followers, or putting a rebel into a coffee table book, which looks like a PowerPoint presentation at times, and hope I don’t end up doing a podcast next.
I chose the later and spent over eight days photoshopping stock photo watermark out of my blorbo’s nose.
I asked myself “Is that everything you can do for Patrick McGoohan?”
Patrick McGoohan, who defined and redefined the word “star” long before it means the same thing as an unskippable ad.
Patrick McGoohan, who shaped and reshaped the future of television for generations to come.
Patrick McGoohan, whose acting, writing and directing have mesmerized, terrified and inspired audience across every cultural, social and political barrier imaginable.
Patrick McGoohan, who was too big for his time and yet too small.
The marvelous and rebellious Patrick McGoohan.
There’s not much I can do, you see. And I don't mean it in a bad way.
Please remember not to take anything I say at midnight too seriously, except when I say "Happy heavenly birthday to my unblorbo!"
And now my hiatus has to start all over again.
Disclaimer: I don’t know anything about graphic design, you can easily guess which ones are “professional” designs I got from some magazines online and which ones are mine. And Tumblr only allows up to 30 photos per post so there are only that many McGoohan stereotypes thrown at his face on his birthday today.

If I could spend a few hours reading every day, I would have a few meaningful lines to say to you. But anyone who knows who McGoohan was doesn't need me to tell them anything.
If I still have anything to say, that's just because life goes on.
My sister is already preparing for the university application next year. She is the most ambitious person in the family and we are doing everything to support that.
My dad dodged paying his breakfast tab for a long time at the university until the lady who sold the food had to go home for Lunar New Year and wanted the money. But he was very good at hiding so she couldn't find him. Then she blocked the classroom doors at the university to catch him. He had to climb the gutter pipe to get out.
His friend's girlfriend, who was from a well-off family, had to pay the money for him. "I owe them for life", he said.
I was reading Dostoevsky when I was supposed to learn business informatics at the university. My holidays were for helping my mom out in the restaurant. The only time I saw Brandenburger Tor was when my grandparents came to visit.
That being said, I'll have more to think about in one year's time than just my laundry, which is still waiting for me now.
Transphobia is about to be signed into law in the UK. We can fight this.
I am begging the UK trans community and its allies to attend the Mass Lobby at Parliament on June 25th, 11am-4pm, organised by Trans Solidarity Alliance.
Last year we broke the record for an LGBT+ mass lobby of Parliament. Will you help us break it again? Join us on 25th June 2026 to demand be
The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or don’t pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:
Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.
Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240, please ask your MP to sign this.
Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. It was a record breaking mass lobby and made us impossible to ignore. Let's do even better this time. Details under the cut:
Worried about what to say?
Bring your personal worries about transphobia being signed into law, and trans friends being excluded from public spaces. You are a living person who deserves dignity. Remind your MP of that. You will also get guidance and brochures from Trans Solidarity Alliance that outlines our demands. This is mine from last year.
Money issues?
Trans Solidarity Alliance provides a travel bursary that you can sign up for via the link.
Got a refusal or no response from your MP?
Come anyway! You can request a same-day appointment with your MP through a process called greencarding. They will come and see you if they’re already in Parliament. Even if they don’t, they’re made acutely aware of your cause because you showed up in person. This is my greencard from last year.
Here is the EHRC Code of Practice in full. It's a tough read, but some highlights are:
Organisations can’t provide trans-inclusive, single-sex services, or they risk being sued for discrimination.
e.g. domestic violence support for women including trans women, men’s rugby group including trans men (12.68).
Trans people will have nowhere safe to pee.
If you’re a trans man, businesses can't allow you to pee in the men's, and you can also be ejected from women’s bathrooms if you’re perceived as a man. Vice versa for trans women. EHRC suggests a ‘third space’ bathroom, which is discriminatory and unworkable for most businesses. (13.130-133)
Sports organisations must exclude trans people from single-sex competitions (13.73).
A women’s only sports competition must exclude trans women because of their biological advantage or face potential lawsuits (13.74), but a trans man who has undergone testosterone treatment can also be excluded based on fairness rules (13.81).
Trans women are stripped of the legal definition of ‘lesbian’, and therefore no longer have legal protections if they’re discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. (2.50, 2.92).
Here is the Good Law Project's better explanation of the EHRC Code.
I have also made a PDF printout of QR codes for the government petition, email your MP tool, and mass lobby link to pass around your communities. DM me and I'll send it to you.

The other day there was a girl walking in front of me on the way home. I saw her picking two leaves out of a bush and then throwing them away. I thought to myself, "I was there, Gandalf. I was there three thousand years ago."
I know I will not be a blorbo blogger forever. I know I will miss the feeling of picking up a pen after work, then putting it down, then searching and reading through 300 pages to make a post.
Even if there was anything in the past that McGoohan could change to make all of this obsolete, I don't think he would have done it.
And not for this self-proclaimed McGoohan's sleepiest soldier.

Even though my lifestyle isn't exactly what I would recommend to anyone, I don't question it that much. But I have to question my blorbo posting sometimes and it's not an easy thing to do.
Things that were wrong turned out to be right. I started my family lore because I felt like we were all wearing those black and white masks and I needed to blow myself up with a rocket so that people can see what I am made of.
Things that were right turned out to be wrong. I wanted to make McGoohan popular. I ended up making myself unpopular instead.
If it wasn't for some people arguing over Last Salute to the Commodore on twitter about three years ago, Patrick McGoohan would have remained just one of the many Columbo guest stars to me. Maybe until the end of my life.
I wonder how long we can live without being aware of each other's existence. And how much it takes just to get there.
One of the reasons why I watched Columbo was that Peter Falk looked nothing like a Hollywood star. He looked like someone who would walk down an alley in South East Asia in Beijing bikini.
McGoohan looked nothing like that. Even the old woman who mistook me for my baby sister's mother would know he didn't belong in that part of the world.
Sometimes I think about the alley where I took my first steps in the outside world. And I think about the many people who might or might not have set foot there. And I think about this blog and how I got here.
Would I go through the whole of human history just because of four words?

"A blorbo blogger's biggest enemy is herself" is something that could have been said by both Patrick McGoohan and Audre Lorde. But it was actually said by Farmer Bebop.
