“Maternal instinct” in the context of someone who has kids, describes a series of chemical and psychological patterns that evolutionarily developed in humans to prevent us from destroying our young when they are needy, stinky and dangerous to the rest of the troop. It’s what makes mothers forget the pain of childbirth and discourages them from crushing their babies with rocks to make them stop screaming.

“Maternal instinct” in the context of someone who doesn’t have kids is a socially-derived thing that developed to justify powerful feelings some moms have around their kids…and to shame women who don’t feel the same way. That shame has various functions ranging from protecting the community as a whole from the burden of abandoned children, to the social control of women, to the justification of rabid mommy feels-inspired child abuse.

The fact is that many people do not feel instinctually connected to their children, and many regret having them. They still love their kids and do right by them (insofar as they can), but they never feel that instinctual passion that people describe as parental instinct. They just create children accidentally or intentionally because they are checking off prescribed life stage boxes and then find themselves trapped in lives that they are ill suited for and unhappy with. This isn’t good for anyone, their children least of all.

By acknowledging that one doesn’t want children and acting on that truth, people are not only making authentic and healthy life choices, but they are preventing the potential suffering of children. These people are making a kind choice. A responsible choice. A loving choice. A choice that reflects anything but brokenness.

You can still be a healthy person without wanting kids.

You can still be a loving person without wanting kids.

You can still be a good person without wanting kids.

You can still have a full, complete, and beautiful life without wanting kids.

Your kids do not owe you grandkids.

You are not entitled to grandkids.
